Otter Gave Birth!

  • They are not sea otters, but small-clawed otters. They like to swim, but give birth on land. And in Japan, it is legal for us to live with otters.
These otters are our family and they trust us very much. So we could spend time with her when she gave birth. She chose to be in a large space with us rather than in a small, dark place.

All mammals have always amazed me with how intelligent they are. Once you get to know them, cats, dogs, rabbits and even chipmunks are mind blowing with how intelligent and aware they are. Our problem as humans, one species of mammal, is that we usually fail to understand our own parameters of smarts don't translate very well. Rabbits might seem pretty dumb to humans who fail to contextually adjust their thinking, but to rabbits we're dumber than dirt. More familiar with dogs and cats who have adjusted to our parameters, most humans fail to recognise rabbits and otters I would say, are relatively smarter than dogs or cats. More personality variation is my reason for making this judgement by the way.

At this point, I've watched a few otters give birth and raise pups. Otsuyu is probably the second best mom I've seen. (the best otter-mom I've seen is Latte in Korea, but she's also more than twice Otsuyu's age _and_ her mate is there to help care for their single pup, Mocha… who's turned out to be a real daddy's girl)

I cried and wanted to hold her hand and try to comfort her and pat her. She was grabbing the bars in pain, poor little thing.. 3 1/2 hours of labor with no epidural. Can you imagine if every human woman had to go through that now a days? Then, a little baby popped out and she didn't know what to make of it at first! She was like, " What in the world IS THAT?" It took a few moments for her to realize she had a BABY! Then, the contractions, AGAIN! Not so long this time, but still PAINFUL. Then, another plop! A second baby! She knew what to do this time. She had to eat the placenta because it's full of nourishment with vitamins and minerals. And she has to lick the privates of the babies because they don't know how to go potty. She's teaching them. I'm sure everyone knows that, but some do not. I think dogs do all of this and cats too. My aunt raised show dogs and this is what happened every time the "bitches" had litters of puppies. I asked my aunt what was going on. Humans didn't do all this stuff, but we have the luxury of epidurals too! We are lucky. :). She's an incredible mommy/okasan. She is taking VERY good care of her pups/babies.

She will have big fat tears running down her soaked little face (only dog I’ve ever seen with actual tears). Well this little otter’s cries really got to her. We are in bed, I start watching this video & she whines loudly, looks at my phone & then digs her way under 3 layers of blankets…few minutes later, she would come out, pace in circles, leave the room & then run back in & stare at my phone. She seemed very concerned about whatever she perceived was upset. I finally turned the volume off. Gosh, I felt so bad for the little otter! Thank goodness everything is ok now!

Why didn't she give comfort to her with all her pain, but petting the other otter instead? I would have tried to reassure the mommy-to-be. And change those bloody towels!

The owner opted to stay because the otter would be more stressed out by their absence. If you notice, even if the otter trusts the owner, it still maintained its distance. They prefer to be undisturbed.

@@ayumuchorizo4486 Otters are known to have very distinct and defined personalities. Loutre-mama gave Otsuyu the choice of how to give birth. Otsuyu chose to be in the cage a little ways away from her human-mama but still within eye/earshot. Loutre-mama respected that. Another of Loutre's lady-otters grabbed Loutre-mama's arm and pleaded for comfort as she (the otter) suffered a miscarriage.

It was heart breaking to see her in so much pain, but beauriful to see how great she made it through. Sister was a great empathetic support. You were also great by giving her her space and letting her gage her own needs.

They always wash their babies clean, to remove any scent of blood to avoid predators.
There is nothing like a mama cuddling her brand new baby. After such travail and hopeful anticipation. It is such a priceless moment. 🐾

Такое необыкновенное чувство! Спасибо, что разделили с нами эти сокровенные моменты. Бедняжка помучилась, но теперь она мать прекрасных детишек. Как же трогательно она их к себе прижимает. Невозможно смотреть без умиления.

I felt so bad for her because I delivered my children in a lot of pain too but I knew what was happening. This little girl didn't. She has her reward for all of her pain now! Already she loves them! Well done sweet girl! 🤗😊💗💗💗
