Black History Month | Rita L. Walters, VP of Development & Alum Relations

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, Union’s VP of Development & Alum Relations Rita Walters honors the great playwright Lorraine Hansberry. Hansberry wrote “A Raisin in the Sun,” which Rita shares “put Black people in our full humanity, on full display, onstage.”

Hansberry's genius also cuts across color lines and into the social reality of being impoverished. I wrote something of a love-letter to her as a final for one of my classes. It was hard to finish; I couldn't stop breaking down in tears.
.....I'm a bit concerned about the "she-ro" thing. It's too close to "so-and-so is the best woman/female writer in American history" and language of that sort. Just let Hansberry be a hero. Otherwise, it gives the impression that she can't compete with men in her artistry.
