I'm 76, and I still use a paring knife for just about anything. That's what my mom and grandma used. I have a drawer full of fancy gadgets, and I still use my paring knife. 😁
My mom still does it that way and she is almost 79. I tend to use a cutting board but every once in awhile I find myself cutting potatoes in my hand. 😅
@Carama Rasmussen, I started using a cutting board about ten years ago. My hands don't work as well as they used to, and after cutting myself too many times, the cutting board is a good thing to have.
I'm in my sixties and I didn't grow up with the food processors or the choppers. Everything's by hand. What's important is a really good cutting board and really good knives. Of course we need good cookware and good mixing bowls. It's okay not to have all the modern gadgets.
I am not sure why a potato cake video brought me to tears but it did. I miss my grandma so much and she's been gone since 1983. I know you all don't need reminding how tremendously blessed you are. She is an absolute treasure. God bless.
Love Granny, Please tell her we adore her and that she is truly an American treasure. Wish I could have documented my Grandma just the same. Special ladies. Thankyou and Granny.❤️amy
I love that Granny was so worried about Lone Star Steak House potato cake recipe being put online. Tell her not to worry. There are recipes from about every restaurant online. The recipe police won't be worried about Granny.
I love that Granny said, "No, Momma's is the best." She still brags on her Momma. I still brag on mine too. It is the love that makes food taste better. My Mom made them for breakfast with the left over potatoes, I do too. I'll be trying Granny's this weekend. They look so good Granny. I may not be able to wait till the weekend though. I love 'good old mountain cuisine'.😀❤
Ms Tipper, i love how respectful you are towards your mom. You never interrupt while she's talking, and you look her in the eye. A lost art which is nice to see on this channel. ❤
I love potatoes. Tator soup. Tator salad. Mashed tators. Tator cakes. (Yes, with chunks of onion.) Shredded tators, fried. Baked. Boiled. You name it!❤
My grandmother made such delicious potato pancakes and stewed tomatoes. All from her garden. Thank you for this! I’m 66 now and got to be transported back to being 6❤
Your granny is a special treasure!! Please have her on more often I love learning about the older recipes and love hearing the beautiful history behind each recipe. ❤️
Did she add cream, sour cream and garlic??? Or did I misunderstand? Was it maybe added to mashed potatoes when first made? Sorry, but I want to try them. Looks good!
So precious! Don’t share it with the WHOLE country! I have fond memories of Grandma Beat’s potato cakes. Lots of onion is the key. She put onion in her fried squash too. My mom dredged her squash with cornmeal, but grandma used flour. Both were good, but the onions in grandma’s just hit the spot. Thank you for the laughs and the walk down memory lane. 🥔 🧅❤️
My Mom was born and raised in Kentucky and I’ll never forget her potato pancakes. I think I dipped mine in ketchup. I thought she was a genius for using leftover mashed potatoes. I love you guys. Still praying for Ms Cindy 🙏🏼❤️
I love seeing Granny cook, and talking about crocheting..shes so precious..thanks for all of yall for taking the time to film, edit n post to CZcams, so we all can share..I felt just like I could taste them tater cakes..oh wow, now I'm hungry...lol
I just ate tater cakes. Everybody has their own way of making them. I use what I have left over in the refrigerator. Today I added green onions and chopped bell peppers. I don’t know how you could go wrong with tater cakes. Granny knows best.
These potato cakes look delicious! I never knew how to make, or cook them. A big thank you to Granny for teaching us. 😊 My momma always used a pairing knife & cut her vegetables in her hands too. Such sweet memories from simple acts. I'm glad she measured for us who don't cook from feel. Blessings to you all & continued prayers. 🕊🙏❤
Granny handles a paring knife well. I'm from a cooking generation up here in the northeast where we " chopped" using a paring knife. God bless you both. I love this.🙂❤️
Thank you for getting Granny to cook us up some fried tater cakes. Really enjoy your interactions with Granny and she is still very sharp. Thanks for sharing Tipper!
Love it. I thought it was so funny she didn't want you putting her recipe out there for the whole world to see. These are wonderful memories. Cherish them and her. Many Blessings.
My 77 yr old mom passed away three weeks ago and my heart is broken. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in December and passed away on May. She use to make potato cakes like this and it was a family favorite. I never did get her recipe and now I can’t 💔. This video came at just the right time as it brings me a bit of joy to watch your mama make them and provides me a recipe I can write down and have. God is Good! Thank you for this video and please tell your mama thank you also.
My mouth is watering watching this. I listen to every word she says! Keep bringing her to the camera!! I'm sure you've seen Cooking with Clara and what she and her grandson did...Granny can bring a level to cooking to all of us that you and I cannot! lol What a jewel she is! :) :) MORE OF GRANNY! LOL
Every day of my childhood, my mom always had a pot of pinto beans, fried potatoes, and cornbread on the stove for supper (with other things sometimes added, like pork chops or meatloaf). The tater cakes remind me of how my mom made tuna patties... Loved those! #countrycookin
Granny is a precious! I can't wait to try the steakhouse recipe for mashed potatoes. And then I get to try her recipe for tater cakes. There will be some good eating in my household this week! Thank you for sharing your Mother with us.❤
I think Granny deserves a follow on recipe segment on her scalloped potatoes or one of her other favorites. I’ll be making these for sure because they will bring back some memories.
Granny is precious!!! She reminds me so much of my mother who passed away at the age of 91, in 2016. Sweet voices of our dear mamas!!!! God bless her!!! ❤🙏🏻
I absolutely loved watching Granny cooking. Her hands and everything she was doing looked just like my Mother who been passed away for ten years. She cooked just like that 😋 . That’s not just Appalachian cooking cause Mother cook that way in southern North Carolina just like that ❤ THANK YOU so much for sharing your sweet Mama!! Another great video (continued prayers for Ms Cindy and y’all 🙏)
Thank you Granny for sharing your potato cake recipe with us? I love watching you and hearing your sweet story of how you got the recipe. Tipper s right Long Horn Steak house won’t care about the recipe, in fact they probably are happy you gave them free advertisement. I can’t wait to try Granny’s recipe. Thank you again Tipper for sharing sweet Granny again with us and her recipe!
I learn 2 things from Granny tonight. My potato cakes were way to big & only add sour cream & heavy cream . I knew about flour & egg. Then u said Pap made the best friend potatoes, well I’ve decided that only men can do world class fried potatoes. My brother & I have tried every trick in the book to match my dad’s potatoes but they r never right. Thanks again for memory lane!!!
Those look like they would taste great. It brings back memories. My mom used to make potato cakes and salmon patties. Absolutely delicious. Mom left us in 2017. Our daughter called her granny. So the videos that you do with your mother remind me of times with mom.

Love this! Y’all are making precious memories & now have it on video, too❤…she’s so sweet, my mama made tater cakes and they were very good…I make them, but they are never as good as mama’s ❤ prayers for Miss Cindy, Granny & all your family ❤
What a precious gift . She melts my heart!!!! She is a blessing from God. My aunt Christine is just like her. May the Lord keep watching over your beautiful family. 😊
My dad loves these! Growing up we always had leftover potatoes. Mom knew how many to cook to feed us but she was always pre-cooking the next days meal. At grandma's these were breakfast and she would crumple cooked bacon and cheese in the mix. In the spring it was green onions. My favorite.
Oh how I wish I could have a plate of Granny's food! I enjoy your videos that feature her. Granny is the best! She is loved by many! *Prayers for Miss Cindy*
Tipper I absolutely love watching your channel. I’m am English girl living in the NY City suburbs for 30 years. I’m a chef, French Culinary trained and working in the NY City area my whole career. It’s so refreshing and relaxing to see you make your food, simple but delicious and nutritious from the land. I have made my living making fancy food for catered events, and I enjoy it. I come from simple English, Irish , Welsh folk and your food reminds me of them, especially my Father who was a wonderful cook. Thank you xxx
Your mother is so precious. She makes me think of my sweet mother and I miss her so much. I can't wait to try her way of making these. They sound delicious.
I just love Granny. She makes me miss my mother and Grandmothers so very much. Sometimes I wish we would have had video like we have now back then so I could have documented all the things I wish I knew from my grandparents and my mother and father. You are so blessed.
I love to watch Grannies face when she's eating something she really enjoys (like holy smoke cake) . The way her face lights up and she gets into it. It's the same look my granddaughter gets when I've made her one of her favorites.
You’re Granny reminds me of how my mother and grandmother use to make the potato cakes. I can’t wait to make some. God bless you all. You continue to be in my prayers.🙏🏻
I'm a purist too! This recipe is like my grandmothers. Except it's ok if we substitute green onions for the white onion! Here in Missouri, I've only ever found potato cakes made from boiled potatoes shredded into some mashed potatoes. Not the same texture and not as good.
Reminds me of MY Gram. She was a West "BY GOD" Virginian. Coal mining family. Youngest of 13. I miss her and her cooking. Bacon grease fried everything. Used to ride the Amtrack" train up there. Great time of my life.
What a sweet lady! I enjoyed her showing us hiw she makes her tayer cakes but I think my FAVORITE part was Granny with her fork poised to grab another bite!❤ Thanks for sharing this. God bless Granny & your while family. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for doing this, I ve tried for 50 years to make these like my moms, and failed every time. Now after watching this I realize I wasn’t adding near enough flour.
I loved watching this! Reminds me of watching my grandma cook. I'd ask her for the recipe and she'd laugh and say I don't have one, you just watch how I make it! So that's what I did and learned her little secrets that no one else knew. Granny is a blessing!!❤
I think your Mama is a natural when it comes to cooking! I could almost taste my mamas tater cakes after watch your mama make hers! God bless and cover you all in grace and mercy! 😊
I make mine like granny! My mama would make these and we always had beanie weenies to go with it. I raised my kids on this and even my grandkids. Thank you for sharing this because not many people have this anymore. Many blessings to y'all!
Your Granny is such a sweetheart, her sweet tender voice warms my heart ♥️ I love watching her cook and listening to her! Please give her a hug for me. Much Tennessee mountain love to everyone!
Oh my goodness! I am so hungry just looking at those and thinking about all that yummy onion cooked inside. I'm not sure I've ever had potato cakes, but I think it would be worth mashing some potatoes just to try them! Thanks so much, Tipper, for getting Granny to do this demonstration, and tell her how much we enjoyed it. And BTW, I planted potato sprouts in a pot on the deck today. I kept thinking about Granny planting potato peels, so that made me brave enough to try it even though I didn't know what I was doing and don't have a clue how to harvest them when the time comes, lol. It's a fun experiment though.
Granny is so precious! I’m writing this potato cake recipe down. I love them and mine never taste good. We always have leftovers potatoes. Thank you sweet granny for sharing your recipe.❤️
Nothing better than tater pancakes! I so wish I lived close to y'all so I could learn some of these cooking traditions. My mom, who passed 22 years ago was from Oklahoma and cooked very similarly. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing with us Granny & Ms. Tipper! I made tater cakes for my Mom, they're So good! Crispy and brown on the outside and soft on the inside. It's funny how some people can take the same ingredients and make the same thing, but MaMa's or Grandma's was always better. I can't make fried taters or dressing like my Mom. They're okay, they're just not like hers or my MeMaw's. The grandkids would get to fightin' over the last of her fried taters, her mustard greens too! God Bless your family, sending you love from Memphis!
Those look so delicious granny is so sweet she doesn't want you to get in trouble for mentioning the steakhouse I can watch a video with her everyday thank you for sharing her with us
We love tater patties, corn patties and soup bean patties. Thank you Granny and Tipper for sharing. We'll be trying this recipe!! I just love watching Granny!

I kept thinking about Granny planting potato peels, so that made me brave enough to try it even though I didn't know what I was doing and don't have a clue how to harvest them when the time comes, lol. It's a fun experiment though.
I hope they make taters for you 😊
Granny is so precious!
Thank you for filming this. Now, we have granny for eternity! She was so special! As are you!🙏🕊♥️🙋♀️🫠
Thank you for sharing with us Granny & Ms.
