In this video I answer the internet's question of how to change the tempo of a single track. The question is a little confusing but I think it means how to change the speed of a single loop or track that is out of time with the rest of the song.
Let me know if you have any other requests and I will answer them in the comments or make some new videos. - Nat - Hudba
Itâs not the answer I was looking for but great to know! I do want to know how to change the tempo of one track without affecting the tempo of other tracks.
I have a beat going on and I want to slow down a rapperâs couple of words here and there. I donât want to affect the other tracks.
There is an option you where you double click the track, on the bottom, you can see a button saying, "Follow Tempo & Pitch". What it does is that it will lock the track into place from the previous tempo for example, if your song is at 110 BPM and you click the button, the track will stay at the tempo until you undo it. With that, you can also change the pitch of the sample.
You could try soloing that track, change the tempo with the tempo track, share/export it to disk, then bring it back to a different (audio) track. I hope that makes sense and helps.
@@8_bitbuttercup169 amazing thank you, I wish this comment was less buried
easy just take that one track you want to change the tempo to
and save it to the temp you like it to be at, then save it onto
your computer then drag it into your existing project,
it will be gold when you add the track which is good
that means the tempo wont change on it in your project,
only the blue tracks and green and yellow drummer
will change. Is that what you meant.
A much easier option is to double click on the relevant track, which will open your highlighted view in the bottom window. There will then be 'Track' and 'Region' views. Choose 'Region' and a radio button down the bottom will say 'follow tempo and pitch' cick that and an arrow will highlight. Every track will now be aligned to whichever tempo the song is adjusted to. Note: you will need to make sure this highlighted on every track, whose tempo you want to align with the songs master tempo
Dude this is genius
God bless you
thank u!!
OMG thank you so much!!!
Ok. That's a crime that this button is hidden by default on my computer (due to the screen resolution the program starts up in). Thank you much.
This is years worth of searching to only find one person who knew what to do! Love this. You are incredible.
Thanks Super Lofi World!
If like me you are just looking for a simple way to change the tempo of the track (to make it faster or slower), then you can just import the song from either loops or from your drive, select the clip/track, click the "Editors" (scissors) button at the top left corner, then with the track selected, go to the bottom left and select "Enable Flex" under Track and "Follow Tempo & Pitch" box under Region. And then play. The track will adjust when you raise or lower the tempo at the top.
At least that's what worked for me (after a lot of trial and error trying to figure it out).
thanks for the helpful comment. different people have been reporting different outcomes with this video!
@@StudioHacks sure thing đ!
ahhh, I have a school project for making a podcast, and I want to make the background beat the right speed, this helped me so much thank you :D
you literally answered a question that I was looking for almost 2 year so thank you very much
Very good but what I really really wanted to know was how to change the tempo of a song without affecting the audio at all. I have a song with about 8 audio tracks - the tempo track is pretty much irrelevant as it's based upon an imported piece with fairly fluid timing. However, I want to insert a MIDI drum loop for about 12 bars in front which starts at 60bpm & ends at 152 bpm.Every time I try this with a tempo track curve, the audio tracks go all over the place!
Such a pure Gold this channel is â€đ. Explanied so well and fixed my issue.

Garageband is ridiculous. Why didn't they just create a simple knob? There are so many other technical things you could be learning. Too many steps.
yeah it sure is missing a few features, i guess thats to be expected with a free entry level DAW.
Exactly. I was about to comment is it just me or does garageband make this more complicated than it should be
i just hope they upgrade the app and add tempo for an mp3 track (you already can change the pitch of an mp3 track by displaying AUNEWPITCH!)
wow just what ive been missing ! your video was sooooo eye opening! just what I was missing ! but very needed ! Cheers to you my friend!

Would this help a dance teacher who wants to learn how to change the tempo of songs imported from itunes? Cut music precisely and add in cool beats? I am looking for a program that is going to help with these specific needs. What do you think?

This this a million times this. Video is a massive life saver. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help đ
Thank you for sharing/explaining your hack..I been searching how to do that for a bit. Much appreciated..
Excellent video!!! This is a really cool trick to know. Thank you so much.
That's great thanks ... was wondering how to alter tempo on individual stems in Garage Band :)
Which version of Garageband was this? Control + Option + G doesn't convert for me like in the video and I'm using 10.3.2
I'm having the same problem - some of the forums are saying it was discontued in ver 10 and only works in v11. But 10.3 is the latest version on the app store. Anyone got any ideas here?
same problem
@@flo84floflo84 same issue here, have you found a solution?
i found the solution, you do control + shift + o instead, or you could just click on file, and "add region to loop library" will be the last option in the drop down menu

hey guys u don't need to do any of this CNTRL+ OPTION+G stuff.
select your track
go to file
then add region to loop library
and make sure the length of the track equates to a whole number
eg. 4 bars instead of 4.3 bars

That is awesome, I can now slow down before you go backing track

thank you so much.
very good sir, exaclty what i meant by that question
Awesome explanation, and exactly what I was looking for! Cheers đ»
I recorded a song vocal at a higher tempo in one project so when I copy and paste it into the new project I have (that has all the beats and stuff), it slowed the vocal down so much. I can rerecord the song but it would be easier not to. Is there a way to just speed up or slow down one track just to match everything else?
Hi, can I combine different tempo together and create a track?
Thanks for that
No problems đ
great explanation and demo! I have a follow up question, somewhat related to this video. If I take a loop from an outside recording, and I copy it to the next track (to be offset but played simultaneously) it sounds way different like its super compressed. How do I avoid this?
Thank you
Thanks Santi
Great hack thanks!
Thank you đ
@@StudioHacks do you happen to know on the playhead on bar 1 it starts at 24 seconds instead of 0 seconds do you know how I can change that back to 0 I dont know what I pressed and it did that.
@@abundanciauniversal4298 You might have the cycle region turned on and it might not be quite at the start of your song (its the golden looking bar near the top of the screen). You can turn it off with the two arrows in a circe just to the right of the record button at the top of the screen. If it's not that, let me know and we can look at it further đ
@@StudioHacks its not that, Im not sure how it happened but at the the very beginning of the track on bar 1 the time says 24 seconds, its kind of strange. Thanks for the reply I might just leave it like that.

How do you record when the bass is stereo? I record my guitar but two rows of waves appear as seen in your case?
It doesn't work for me.
Anyone who like me can't get control-option-g to work... instead - double click on the loop (assuming its a wav or mp3), turn on 'enable flex' and 'follow tempo and pitch' then file/add region to loops... make sure type is 'loop' NOT 'one shot' - this turns on the magic that will allow GB to retime the sample. okay it to make it a loop then when you drag the newly created loop into a track it should retime it to the project tempo - - I THINK - it works for me anyway. I'm guessing apple maybe changed things a bit hence it not changing blue anymore? i'm on 10.3.3
@@evocative_films Tried this. When I drag on to loops it does not allow me to change from one shot to loops
The truth same
@@ivandavidparra Make sure you are clicking file in the upper left corner, then add region to loop library, then select loop (the audio must end on a whole beat measure so just shorten it as required) then when used it should conform to whatever tempo

nice one, what it is on the top right next to the looper, thank you
Hi JK, this I've been searching hi and low for this, however I wondered if there is a step that I have missed?? When I try ctrl, option, G on my Mac (I select each key and then hold all keys down together) nothing happens. It won't change the track from brown to blue. Is there something I have to enable/disable first? Thanks in advance!
I have an audio from a class I purchased, and I am trying to speed up the instructors voice in GarageBand. It's an outside downloaded file, and I can't get it to change speed. What do you suggest?
When I play the file on the internet browser I can speed up the playback, however,, I downloaded the audio file to import into my music, and need help speeding up that file! :)
I have a drum loop for a song but it doesnt match the rest of my song, how can I change the tempo so it does? the CRTL thing doesn't work, someone help!!
what if Im trying to remix a track that has an unsteady tempo? can i easily fix the original track or am i gonna have to remake the sample note for note?
I have a garageband project with a tempo of 152 bpm and want to add a midi file with 76 bpm without speeding it up. The tracks are meant to be played at the same "speed," such that a quarter note in the project corresponds to an eighth note from the midi file. Is there a way I can double the length of every note in the midi track, essentially slowing down its tempo by half so I can play it at 152 bpm and hear it at the same speed? The file is too complex to change the length of every note individually.
I have a version of a song I recorded on tape. I want to sync it up to the grid so I can add virtual instruments. Can that be done in GarageBand???
Hi I doubled the intro to the song right when I dragged the intro in it was softer than the rest of the song
why is that they are both set at 39 in Garageband how can I fix that please now its saved in loops do I
have to delete it out of loops and start again but dont no how to delete it out of loops let along fixing the
volume in it any way HELP lol
Very well explained and easy to follow tutorial, thank you so much
Thank you Carlos
What I'm looking for is increasing the tempo for the chorus, then back again for the verses in one song
just stumbled on this. The tempo change need for me is that of moving a part of a track in the earlier part of the song where tempo is a bit relaxed, but the second half is a bit sped up. I'd like drop in a copy of the first part of a tune to the second and have things line up. I multitracked drums but the LOH dropped out in the second half. It's not lining up I the second half to the ROH. Just want to get all the hit to line up on the copied LOH with the existing ROH. Follow? I'm trying to avoid nudging every hit due to it being a significant part of the song.
I need help any imported beat I put into GarageBand plays to fast and I tried what you showed and it doesn't work if you can do a video on that it will be highly appreciated
is there any way we can do a accelerando or deccelerando in garange band??
No I want to change the tempo for the outro go from slow to fast for the outro. Like in the Billy Squier song lonely is the night! Can you help with that.
Hi Nat, can you speed the song up and down as if a live band is playing and going with the energy of the song? Cheers mate, hope that my question is clear enough to understand.
I added another drum track I made with 60s drummer, but when I change the temo at the top there is doesnt change the tempo of the track at all. all it does is change the view length but bot the speed. any ideas
Find the tempo of the song and make sure you aligned it perfectly with the track. Once you're sure it's in tempo with the track, double click the track and you'll see a button that says, "Follow Tempo & Pitch". What that does is that it'll stay at the tempo you left it at while you changing the BPM.
I want to slow down part of a verse for the end of my song, what do I do?
Whenever I import a track into GarageBand it always says the tempo is 120. And when I try to bring a sample in, it never matches the tempo, which is not 120 anyway despite saying it is. Ever see this or hear of this problem?
great tip, thanks - however - anyone, who like me can't get control-option-g to work... instead - double click on the loop (assuming its a wav or mp3), turn on 'enable flex' and 'follow tempo and pitch' then file/add region to loops... make sure type is 'loop' NOT 'one shot' - this turns on the magic that will allow GB to retime the sample. okay it to make it a loop then when you drag the newly created loop into a track it should retime it to the project tempo - - I THINK - it works for me anyway. I'm guessing apple maybe changed things a bit hence it not changing blue anymore? i'm on 10.3.3
thanks!
for some reason my loop option is grayed out. is there a reason to that ?
A step by step, without the other information in between might be more helpful. Throwing in too much other information makes it less linear, and harder to follow.
how to sync the metronome with a backing track song? the entire song without going out of sync??
It didn't work for me. I have a Mac mini so I'm on a PC keyboard, I did CTRL+ ALT +G and I got nothing..
Can anyone help? I have a Wav file at 140 BPM trying to take it to 148.
Hey! So I did as you explained in the video. The problem I have is that I can't open the loop in the other project (or in any other project) because it does not exist there. Why is it that some loops open in some projects and in others I can't find them? I have downloaded all available Loops, but even the loops in total that I have in each project available for use varies. Why is that?
hmmm that's a strange one, never come across that before. Maybe make sure you copy any external files into the garageband folder under music on your mac so they are always in the same spot. You may be importing loops and samples from an external drive? maybe make sure they are on the system drive. Let me know how you go.
mine does not turn blue and when I try to save it in the library, it asks to enter a set tempo. help
I simply want a tempo change in the middle of my song for different parts
Hi! I recorded my voice for podcast and put another track with my friend's voice. And when I try to adjust tempo, so I could spend less time searching for bloopers, etc. it adjusts only my voice but not a friend's. I've tried to adjust her tempo in another GB project but it didn't help. And it also has yellow colour. How could I solve this problem? Thank you!
When the track is yellow you can go on (edit scisors) region and click the Q for quantize.
Thank you very much for this piece of advice! However, my problem is more that those orange tracks aren't responding to tempo changes the way all the blue ones do. How can I make those orange tracks blue?
Click: Control, Option, G at the same time
Is there a way to do this on an Ipad?

Hi!... helpful video... can i ask you how to fix a song with unsteady tempo? My problem is that i've got a bunch of tracks with a certain BPM acording to songbpm.com; however, many times, half way through the song it goes off tempo... So how can i make the song fit the grid accurately?... thx very much
Maybe because the song has a different time signature? If it's not, you might need to chop it up a bit to make into tempo by cutting it manually to make into tempo.

Yes im trying to do that too for my song. Hopefully someone can answer this even though you asked it 5 months ago. Does anybody know how to change the tempo for an individual sound in a song while other parts of the song are a different tempo??. The only thing I can think of is to make my bass section a loop and save it like he did with his happy loop 1 and then mess with the rest of the track to my liking and then add the loop later so that I can tweak with its tempo that way if that makes sense. Idk if that would even work.

how to i get rid of the padlock on my imported audio file?
The problem is, tat the .mp4 you are importing to GarageBand is added as a movie track, and that is behaving differently from regular tracks. You cannot shift the position of the audio of a movie track. What you however can do is copying the the audio track of the movie to a new audio track. That will be unlocked. And then simply delete the movie you imported to GarageBand.
