can't believe they left this out of the new show!
This was a great scene showing how open Lord Toranaga was to other cultures to learn something at the cost of looking like a fool, and always being open to new things showed how light years he was above other lords. No wonder he made Shogun. Even when he was messing up the steps he learned quick and still had the dignity about him.
It was 41 years ago, I was 6, and this is the one scene I remember from the series.
Interestingly enough, the real Tokugawa Ieyasu was somewhat less accepting of European culture. The Toranaga character in this seems to be a bit of a mix between the real Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga, Ieyasu's old boss, who was very fond of European culture.
@@weemissile Toranaga was pretty much the same in the book too.. he wasnt fond of the europeans on Japanese lands and this is revealed i believe towards the end of the book on how he plans to close of japans from the European barbarians. But unlike others Iyeyasu and his fictional counterpart Toranaga dint despise them for the sake of it and blindly kill everyone. He learnt from them and learnt how to manipulate them and use them like his falcons. He didnt hate them on racial grounds and was only concerned the eventual destruction they would bring to Japanese culture like what they did to other Asian counties like India for example. Hence Japan knew 200 years of peace while all the other superpowers like India and China was humiliated looted and filled them with poverty
I remember there is a scene in the book after making a deal with a catholic priest in exchange for help, he broke out in this dance after the priest left. 🕺. 😂
IIRC in the books he threw off his toga to dance. The Japanese did not view dancing as shameful, likewise for many other things. It was mostly Blackthorne who was thinking "great now youve made a fool of yourself and need to dance before your enemies" or something like that
I love the scene that follows, when he's dancing on the wall of the castle.
Yes!
And Mariko is looking at him with total affection as he was introducing the first new foreign song to Japan. Then came... J-pop. xD
It's kind of remarkable that Toranaga retained a Japanese-ness to his dancing despite getting the steps from Blackthorne
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. We copy and mimic each other, albeit imperfectly and that makes the world a wonderful place (for the most part).
Toranaga was moving like a warrior - good fighting footwork!
"I've got it!" grunt at 1:02!
Unlike the Romans, the Samurai were not ashamed to dance. It was, in fact, a sign of good upbringing and character, along with being well versed in poetry and calligraphy.
Where do you get this bullshit from? Of course the Romans danced and liked to and was heavily influenced by the greek form of dancing. What were they the Vulcans?
Where did you hear this about the Romans? Dancing was common among the Romans and practically mandatory at religious festivals. One of the documented top qualities required of an officer was a "good sense of humor", a quality not documented to be required in any other military that I know of. There's grafiti of everything from low brow fart jokes to clever puns to dark jokes like a man complaining he was scammed saying "the slave you sold me died!" to which the seller replied "my gods, he never did that when I owned him."
source: trust me bro
This is one scene is what makes the original better than the 2024 version. There is no whimsy, no fun. 2024 is just too dark.
Exactly
To this day I'm amazed they managed to get Toshiro Mifune for Toranaga. Brilliant series, packed with great actors and actresses, and pretty faithful to the book too, which is pretty rare.
I love that Toranaga throws in his vocalizations. It gives the whole thing the air of a Noh performance. In the novel, Lord Toranaga was especially fond of Noh plays, and they explained that he had them performed and performed in them in honor of his guests frequently. I don't know if this is historically true of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but it certainly adds an extra layer to the character and to Toshiro Mifune's portrayal.
omg i love this, love the way Toranaga says ''wooo'' haha
Everything Toranaga says is impressive in that series. He speaks with incredible gravitas.
@@brushstroke3733 Ping-pong-pow, ting-tung-tow
@@brushstroke3733 Mifune, what a magnificent man.
I liked the look in Anjin's face when Toranaga asked him to teach him the dance - "But you can't dance it when sober..."
I love this particular fun scene! what I also like is Toranaga's sense of humor!
My favourite scene of the series!
They did a good job dancing. The ladies were amused. 😂
You may be cool. But you will never be "Dancing the Hornpipe With Japan's Supreme Warlord" cool.
Right.......
Before or After he takes 60,000 heads?....
If this song is not sung in the new shogun series I will cry. I remember it so well from watching shogun when I was a kid. I rented it from the library.
Same! I'm really looking forward to see how they handle this scene. 👀
Judging by the atmosphere of the new show, they won't do this scene at all.
@@DoggmaticProductions yeeeah, it's looking that way. The new series is much more somber, and has a different kind of pacing. I'm guessing they felt either that the tone would be off, or they just didn't have the time. I'm still hoping that it might appear as a deleted scene if they ever publish those. 🤞
@@LinMaedros would be great but I doubt it was even filmed as they seem to be purposely omitting any "white saviour" implications and the show doesn't have this sort of fun at all.
In the new series they replaced this dancing scene with the diving lesson (both in the book)
So glad I came across this series! It is incredibly well done with accurate costumes and cultural points. So cool!!! And what an absolute jam. 👌🏼
The greatest book and rendition of the Samurai code.
You are misguided by the book, I assure you.
I do this everytime I'm intoxicated. The side to side motion is fantastic cardio
I just read the book for the first time and Toranaga is one of the most fascinating characters I have ever come across in literature. Ever calculating, always playing chess, he had a knack for manipulation and winning people to his side. Even this simple act of learning a foreign dance helped earn him the loyalty and trust of a man whose knowledge and skills would later be of great use to him.
Agreed. An absolutely amazing character and a pleasure to get to know through the book.
This scene always makes me laugh lol xD. Thank you for posting this! There are not too many Shogun scenes so I appreciate it. Such a good novel and such a good mini-series. Toshiro Mifune and Richard Chamberlain did such a good job. Everyone played their parts so well.
I never saw the depth of this scene, watching the series as a kid. Mifune is amazing! If you pay attention throughout this whole sequence - he gradually learns the steps till he gets it perfect in the end,but doing it in this smooth, elegant way, like japanese Noh theatre, especially the final turn.
I had a similar experience - I personally read the book as a kid, and completely missed the importance of this scene back then, but then I watched the series later on (at that point I was a fairly serious dancer myself) and this was the absolute highlight of the entire story for me. ^^ It's subtle, but that's what makes it amazing.
I love this even more as the series is heavily based on actual real events that did take place, including what the characters to do. Not 100%, but it's fairly close.
Tokugawa possibly did just this - danced with his favoured guest. Despite effectively trapping him in Japan, he did all he could to keep the foreigner comfortable for the rest of his life. At least that is what I can recall. I may be somewhat or very wrong here, so do not take my word for truth without looking up the facts more closely.
I was looking at videos or infos on the remake they are planing to air next year (on Hulu). I’m very curious to see what this new version will bring to the first series. I have fond memories of that tv series so I was looking at old clips from it. I re-watched «shogun» maybe 2 years ago. For your comment it’s true that it was inspired by true events and real people (names were changed in the novel). One thing I’m not sure is if Chamberlain character (John Blackthorne) really got «prisoner» of the islands. A detail I completely forgot in the 1980 series and I was a bit saddened by the way that story ends.
You dance very well, Anjin-san. Learn our language in 6 months or Lord Yabu will command an entire village be crucified. Hop hop, no time like the present!
@maven21 Indeed. I was really amazed at how incredible a job Toshiro did in portraying Toranaga. This scene one of the clearer displays of his mastery over the character.
I'm fairly certain Toranaga is having a very nice time with this dance, and doesn't mind looking like a fool at all. :)

Rumor has it that George Lucas wanted him to play Darth Vader in Star Wars. When he didn't take the role, they changed the Vader character and gave him a mask. But his helmet was still inspired by the samurai helmets.
@@brushstroke3733 Nope. He wanted him to be Obiwan Kenobi
@@kansairobot2015 I don't remember the source, but it seemed credible to me. It explains the shape of Vader's helmet at least. What's your source? Were you there?
Who would down-vote this? Why are you here?
Just a wonderful, book and movie, about a fascinating time in history and clash of cultures.
What seeds this movie planted in me. I'm watching these clips during my last night in Tokyo.
Do watch the miniseries instead of the movie (many hours of material was hacked out of the miniseries to create the movie).
@@SlartiMarvinbartfast I saw the miniseries in it's first broadcast and some years ago before it was pulled from CZcams. Plus, I read the book.
@@wisskierugh, wish it hadn’t been pulled. Still trying to watch the 80s version
Wonderful and beautiful
I had something similar a month ago. my brothers came to visit me and naturally we got drunk and began to shout songs loudly. A neighbor came with indignation, "why are we making noise?" I said that I haven't seen you for several years. he sat down with us and started yelling songs)))))
I need to both reread the book and rewatch the miniseries
Tom Atchley Where do you find the miniseries?
On CZcams. Search for Shogun 1980 ( The uploader called it Jesuit Movie "Shogun" )
Tokugawa Ieyasu was an extraordinary individual.
Hahaha, the best thing in the whole series xD
las señoras japonesas eran sofisticadas y elegantes .esos kimonos impecables
ooooOOOO!
Fuckin awesome!!! :)))
Duty as heavy as a mountain, death as light as a feather; that is the way of the samurai.
Es un clasico👋👋👋👋👋
i get this scene is much too silly for the serious and dark tone of the new show but i really wish they had something like this in the re make, the diving was alright but when it shows toranaga doing the dance on the wall later it shows it’s something that he enjoys a lot and can do often wherever, a dive is just a dive but a dance is so much more
reading this chapter was such a delight in shogun, perhaps its my favorite book of all time. Perhaps its the greatest book of all time
Thank you for the Great video
Торанага жгёт ! ))))
esta saga de Xogum e muito boa, parabens pelos idealizadores desta serie.
Thx=) I like very much "Shogun".
Muy gracioso richard!! l love
When I saw a Documentary about The Carpenters I was stunned to find out that he did an Album that Burt Bacharach and Hal David worked on together. In The UK alot of their Songs were later covered by Three UK Singers Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw and Cilla Black. Dusty & Cilla are dead and Sandie is retired.
He doesn't look as though he has itbin him. Well done :)
One of my happy songs 🍻🤣
This particular scene and others were the characters of this story engaged in various forms of art -- taught me there is nothing "gay" in indulging in arts in any form. Sing, recite your own poetry, dance, paint -- it's all good
This scene, and what followed it made me laugh.
I had hoped this scene would go on for a little longer.
l love richard chamberlain forever❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yani tek sezon. Edinin. Hiçbir kanalda oynamıyor.
Suat Cesur, özellikle Japon kültürüne ilgi duyuyorsanız dünyada izleyeceğiniz birinci dizi.
I'm curious to see Hiroyuki Sanada perform this scene 🤔🤣
Every time I watch this scene, I keep thinking that Blackthorne will say "give me some time to blow the man down!"
May the templar force be with you
This scene in the book is around the time of the “duck” incident. I’d love to explain the part I mean more explicitly, but don’t think CZcams would allow the comment 😂
16'th century version of karaoke
Admiro la cultura japonesa tiene cosas muy buenas de las que se puede aprender y sin contar la honestidad que ellos práctican hasta el día de hoy
There was no reason to remake this film
Oh, how I wish Lord Toranaga wound have been Obi Wan Kenobi.
TRANAGAの俳優は日本舞踊の素養があるね
今の日本の若い俳優はそれがないので、時代劇を演じていてもまるで子どもみたいに見える。
Only 1600 kids will get this
@MarcoHippie I'm pretty sure that the song was written specially for "Shogun". I think it isn't a real sailor song. The internet would suggest that way, anyway, since you can't find it anywhere except in the context of the series.
Branislav Milojkovic It was apart of the original boon written for the series by James Clavell
It is in fact a real shanty called a sailor's hornpipe
Now😃Yes. Indeed now. A lesson for all. Very Zen..
Now I have the VHS which is very old , but it doesn't have that scene on it , is this a part that's on DVD only ? I watch The Shogun also here on CZcams and it didnt have that part on it also. Help someone?
there is a tune, mostly you have to ask those music players. the dancing can be made up or polished to look good from generations of dancing styles.
Toranaga-san thinks that Mr. Anjin-san is doing a form (i.e., a Kata)
I have that serie in tape
I'm drunk right now and can't stop singing and dancing this
1:09 AND 1:19 AND 1:30 ... GOLD!!!
It's a wonderful phrase about the life of Samurai. Mariko was samurai, it was her fate to die for her Lord. As it is for every samurai.
So don't hate Torinaga, Mariko died with honour.
Nobody I think doesn't hate him.
It was Mariko's karma to die gloriously. Anjin's karma is to never leave this land. (C) Toranaga
