  • Animal Horn is an overlooked primitive living, survival and bushcraft resource. Animal Horns can be found in the wilds of the word and purchased in many taxidermy and online stores. Horn was used by our primitive ancestors in many ways, but one way in particular...the vessel.
In this video I show and demonstrate three uses of different animal horns. Uses are for holding rendered deer tallow for candles, holding water as a primitive water carrier and the last for holding and carrying fire over distance.

Must of the horns that I find are from rams...big horn sheep or desert sheep that have died or been killed. Goats, cows, sheep, water buffalo, gazelles and antelopes all have horns. The possibility exists, but only after the animal is dead does the possibility really exist of finding horns. Our primitive ancestors had the greater use as they were able to hunt the game that typically had horns and use them to their desired state.

1:35 - is that leather fixed in any way to that wood, or is it just wrapped around?

Some interesting concepts! I don't normally find animal horns in my area, but maybe I find one to purchase.

If it is just dirty I just scrub it out. If it has hair and bits and pieces of stuff on it I treat it like bone and boil it. However, be carefully because horn is made of keratin (same material as our finger nails) and can change shape if to much heat from the boils is applied. So, boil long enough to remove "nasty's" but not to long to change shape. a good wash will do the job as well.

This is what drives me nuts. Friction fire sets are not one shot wonders. You can use them for more than one fire and you should. The First Nations carried these sets with them, they didn't make them with each fire and neither should we.

It's funny how people that don't live in the woods see this stuff as lame
