  • In this episode of dirtcheapdaily, Aaron makes a short shifter for his '97 Subaru Legacy GT for free!
    Some of you might argue that this mod isn't free because you don't have a welder. Luckily, a harbor freight welder is cheaper than most if not all name brand short shifters! You can routinely find the 90amp 110V Harbor Freight welder on sale or with a coupon for $79.99 or $89.99. Once you have the welder, you'll be able to do even more DIY projects, which makes it worth the investment in tools instead of just buying a bolt on part!
    This video is Subaru specific, but this method will work on other makes and models.

    Just a quick welding tip. Heat warps metal, to keep it where you want it and not have it warp and twist out of place on you, you should always clamp it in place and tack both sides before actually running a bead. If you do it the way you did, and you flip it over to weld the other side and notice your gap is considerably more, thats why. Glad to see theres actually some people out there that know what and how a short throw shifter is, and not just hacking off the lever lol.

    Good one bro,
    Just thinking, instead of welding it back on to the lever, if we attach a screw- to the bracket, then we would get an "adjustable short shifter" that can slide up and down the gear lever and be tightened using the screw/nut bolt, wouldn't we?
    Just asking if you are aware if there would be any issues you would expect if we try that?
    Thanks,

      +Kuru Mathew dude, awesome idea! The only issue I see is the little bend towards the bottom of the shaft. I have another stick I was planning on making an even shorter shifter, but I might try your idea and see if it works.

    Bro your channel has taught me a lot, I love it. Just got an 02' Legacy GT and I wanted to put in a short throw, but I may just do this instead, I also have a wobbly shifter, and I watched your video on changing out the bushings so that helped as well. Thank you for what you do man.

    the shifter stick is different in my Subaru Legacy 2002, it's a steel stick going into steel tube with polyurethane between them and another steel tube welded horizontally and you just need to put the two polyurethane pieces in the horizontal tube and mount the shifter fork with a bolt and nut
    that I s very good way for DIYers

    I bet it didn't work, the linkage connector on the bottom of the shaft would not line up any more. It would be lifted & it would no longer make contact

    Nice video. But the stock shifter in my car is like really wobbly so this mod would only make it harder to shift :D. Therefore I still got myself an aftermarket shifter.

    How did the shifter feel in the car?

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  Před 7 lety +6

      +hoabadoa it feels really good. I have a tall shift knob on it, so the throw is still kinda long, but it would be a lot shorter if I had a normal sized knob on it. And even shorter if I shortened the actual shaft. I'm going to post an update video soon showing it and a few of the other mods I've done and how they're holding up.

  • @matt1267
    @matt1267 Před 6 lety +1

    That's actually not what happens. The ball does not connect to the shift linkage. The ball is the pivot. By moving the linkage up (the bracket you took off and rewelded), you increase the angle of the linkage meaning less travel room for gear engagement. A higher angle means a greater distance for the linkage. That distance travel for the linkage is the hypotenuse and the pivot is on a 90 degree x. This changes the angle when changing allowing for a shorter x direction. Why should I take advice for someone like you?
