    Sheffield United’s performances in the Premier League this season have put them in the hunt for European football - for a newly-promoted side many thought would be mired in a relegation struggle, Sheffield United have played with huge tactical ingenuity and skill as well as work ethic and organisation. Chris Wilder and Alan Knill, the assistant manager who has overcome his run-in with a squirrel to become one of the most tactically innovative number two’s in the game, have forged a team greater than the sum of its parts by developing and refining an approach that gets the most from its players, producing excellent football and results.

    As a Blade it is with immense pride that I see my beloved team play such praise worthy innovative football, especially with players normally considered 'Championship' players and with a core of British talent. All the more so when you have a huge Blades fan in Wilder Managing the team and another huge Blades fan in Billy Sharp as Captain of this team. This is truly the greatest period for Sheffield United in my 30 years watching and am under no illusion things change quickly in modern football but I am going to savour this time and no doubt talk about this period and Wilder's team into my old age. I just earlier this season watched RB Leipzig play a similar (although a slightly more attacking) way in a 3-5-2/3-4-3 with overlapping centrebacks in a match. It hit me that they played Lukas Klostermann, usually a right wing back, as the right centre back of the 3 and him regularly entering the opposing penalty area with runs from deep, even creating chances for himself to score.
    I thought that it's not uncommon to have a centreback make a run into the box once or twice a game for a chance, but it happened time and time again so it couldn't be a coincidence. A genius innovation by the brilliant Julian Nagelsmann I thought, as I hadn't seen something quite like it before. It seems Sheffield has found success doing something similar.
    If RB Leipzig keep doing it and Sheffield are having success with it, overlapping centrebacks could become a trend in the new decade of football, and I'm really excited for it as it turns dull 5-back formations into real fluid, positive attacking football!

    I think Cruijff used attacking wide centre backs in a 3-4-3 sometimes at Barcelona. I watched a video of him describing how it caused opposition forwards to track them, reducing the threat the forwards could cause by being further from the Barca goal.

    Bielsa's Chile played like this, with overlapping centerbacks. See Fabian Orellana's goal against Argentina in 2008, where Gary Medel (right center back) ran to the touchline after overlapping on the right side and assisted Orellana to score for the first and only official win that Chile has ever got on 90 mins against Argentina.

      As the other commenter mentioned, when Sheffield United played Leeds Bielsa said that he had attempted it but was unsuccessful, and was impressed at how Wilder had managed to make the system work when he himself couldn't. Bielsa also said that Wilder was the only manager doing things he'd never seen before, and that he had learnt the most by watching Wilder than any other manager during his time in England.

Don't know if the AI still does that or not, but it was interesting. I'd also like to know how Sheffield doesn't expose themselves with two overlapping CBs. Does only one CB move up at a time?

  • @BruBish
    @BruBish Před 4 lety +1

    Arguably quite rightly Klopp will likely be tipped as manager of the season for his impressive title win, but for me the step up isn't that much greater than last season. My vote would be Wilder all day. No disrespect intended to Sheffield, but the fact that he has got a poor quality side playing such high quality football is a testament to his tactical and man management approach. Playing a system that gets the most out of the players while also getting the players to get the most out of the system sounds easy, but in truth it takes good coaching, good tactical analysis, a good recruitment policy and good man management. Rarely do those things come together, especially at a club of more limited resources like SUFC. Credit to them and credit to Wilder

It's to their credit that they're playing at the level we have seen, and it's to the credit of Wilder that he's seen more in them that just players not good enough for other sides. But let's be clear, most of these lads hadn't been gathering interest from the top clubs in England
