    The difference in first vs second generation is the first gen the better of the two types.Early models had a street L fitting for the gear oil,and later in the 50's the brass cup was added yet some latter were aluminum.Some changes were made back to the street L in later runs as manufacturing was changed by supplier as well as country of origin.Currently (at this post) I have two first gens in the shop,one 1941 with cast iron wheels and one 52 with aluminum wheels.Not sure when the aluminum wheels went into production on the first generation.

    Thank you! I think the inner roll pin broke or cam out ,when I push it in the blade doesn't turn ,I guess I have to take the bearings out to get to it 😢

    Great Vid! I'm trying to disassemble the clutch shaft on the newer version. It's been really abused and is missing some parts. Would you have any advise? I assume the bull-gear needs to be unshafted. Was heat necessary? Thanks very much, C. In Idaho

    I have a first gen saw with the street plumbing fitting at the oil fill. So there may be some overlap in the change over sequence. EDIT: In reading the 1946 manual, Delta states. "Late models are equipped with the screw top brass oil gauge SP5001. Older models have a 1/2 inch street elbow with a pipe plug. This fitting is easily replaced by the brass oil plug now available. "

      Nice, I always assumed they went to the 1/2 eblow during the Rockwell years when they were cutting cost of production

    I have the second generation transmission and when I put it into either wood or metal gear it slowly works its way out and ends up in the center in the neutral position I don’t see where there’s a D tent or anything there to hold it what is broken inside there that’s not keeping it locked in to the Lovejoy connections on each setting.. why is it slowly drifting out of the connection and into the center between each gear that’s being I guess in neutral..???
    It’s just not staying engaged in metal or wood after it runs for less than a minute it’s already worked its way out..???
    Can anybody let me know why that would be doing that,, I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out once I tear it apart but I want to know what’s happening before that… what could be broken in there where it’s not staying engaged in gear.???

      I would start by looking on vintagemachinery.org they have a lot of manuals for theses saws

    Can you tell me how the love joy mechanism is held in place my Saw keeps popping out of gear into neutral.. I had to wrap a rope around the shaft keeping the push pull mechanism in the pool position because it keeps migrating back in and popping into neutral I don’t see in your video how the push pull mechanism locks into place keeping it in either low or high gear.. I can’t tell when you’re demonstrating the movements in the second generation mechanism what holds it either pulled out or pushed in keeping it from migrating out of gear between low and high..???

    • @restoration-projects
      @restoration-projects  Před rokem

      There is nothing that keeps it engaged other than the friction of the 2 shafts against each other. You need to check your lovejoy connections to make sure they are not rounded over, causing them to disengage under load.

      I didn’t see that there was a reply but now I do,, thank you very much,, now I know that at least there’s not a detent or anything locking it in the place other than the connection itself…Thank you

    Can anyone tell me how the upper drive shaft (with pull/push shifter 2nd addition) comes out. Both roll pins shear off.

    • @restoration-projects
      @restoration-projects  Před 2 lety +1

      you will have to use a punch to knock out the broken roll pins and re pin it. It's not a fun job but its doable.

    Hi there, I am from South Africa and busy with a re-furb on a 2nd generation machine, my problem is that I have a few parts missing, the not big parts but impossible to find in my country, one is on the main shaft - no 157 (wavy washer) and other is on the smaller shaft no 164 (felt bushing) Would you know where to find these 2 parts

    • @restoration-projects
      @restoration-projects  Před rokem +1

      I have had good luck with ebay as the parts are fairly available in the US. I know a lot of ebay sellers don't offer international shipping due to the added cost and time. The wavy washer could probably be substituted with a split lock washer as it needs to add some lateral force against the bearing. You could probably make the felt washer from a like type of material. Good luck with the rebuild, send some pictures of it when you have a chance. Cheers

    I have just aquired a second gen saw but it does not have the large pulley for wood cutting. It's part # 160 in the parts diagram. I can machine a new love joy hub and get a pulley from farm supply but I don't know it's size. Can you please tell me the diameter of that pulley. Thank You!

    • @restoration-projects
      @restoration-projects  Před 2 lety

      It's a 8" diameter pully. You might be able to find a OEM one on ebay for the same price as one from a fram supply store. Good luck with the restoration

      @@restoration-projects I'm still trying to figure out what I have. The manual says there are two different cone pulleys, 41-724 and 41-713. I believe I have one of them, but don't know which one. It measures about 3 1/8 over the small end and about 4 1/2 over the large end. Manual says the small end of one and the large end on the other are the same. Any thoughts on which one I have? THANKS AGAIN!

      @@donsipes All of them have three pulleys.the large is 8 od and the other three have two sizes,large for the gearbox and the smaller for the motor.It requires two different belts for each operation=1 for wood-1 for metal.

      Okay bear with me I just got my hands on a 28-300 with the latter gen set up but missing the gear box.
      I've may have a bead on a first gen gear box and matching bull gear...
      Could I swap the bull gear as well and use the 1st Gen gear box in place of the 2nd gen?
      Also thank you so much for posting this video and for your help so far!
