Obaidul Quader is a Bangladeshi politician who has been General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League since October 2016. He is the current Minister of Road Transport and Bridges and a Member of Parliament representing the Noakhali-5 constituency. He is still representing Awami League in the media and working voluntarily as their media advisor. He was the State Minister of Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs from 1996 to 2001.
Early life and education
Quader was born on 1 January 1950 to Begum Fazilatunnesa in Bara Rajapur village, Companiganj Upazila in Noakhali district. He has three brother and six sisters including Abdul Quader Mirza, the incumbent mayor of Basurhat municipality in Companiganj, Noakhali. He completed his matriculation with a first division from Basurhat A. H. C. Government High School and HSC from Noakhali Government College with a place in the merit list. He obtained his bachelor's degree.
Career
Quader was involved in politics since his college life. In 1966, he played an active role during the Six point movement. He was also active in the Mass Upsurge and the Eleven-Point Movement in 1969. After 1975, Qader was imprisoned for two and a half years. While in prison, he was elected President of the central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League and he remained so for two consecutive terms. He worked as the assistant editor of the newspaper in Daily Banglar Bani for a long time.
Quader was elected as a Member of Parliament from the constituency Noakhali-5 in the parliamentary elections of June 12, 1996. He was State Minister of Youth, Sports, and Cultural Affairs from June 23, 1996 to July 15, 2001, and he was first senior joint general secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League from December 26, 2002 to July 26, 2009. He was arrested on 9 March 2007 by the Caretaker government of Bangladesh and remained in prison for 17 months and 26 days before he was released on bail on September 5, 2008.
On 5 December 2011, Quader was appointed as Minister of Communication. He was elected as a member of parliament on 5 January 2014, from the constituency Noakhali-5 for the third time in the 10th parliamentary election.He became the General Secretary of Awami League in October 2016 at the 20th council of the party.
Personal life
Quader is married to Isratunnesa Quader.

আওয়ামী লীগের ২০তম জাতীয় সম্মেলনে নির্বাচিত সাধারণ সম্পাদক ওবায়দুল কাদেরের জন্ম নোয়াখালীর কোম্পানীগঞ্জ উপজেলার বড় রাজাপুর গ্রামে ১৯৫২ সালের ১ জানুয়ারি। তিনি এখন সড়ক পরিবহন ও সেতুমন্ত্রী। ওবায়দুল কাদেরের বাবার নাম মোশাররফ হোসেন। তিনি কলকাতার ইসলামিয়া কলেজে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের সহপাঠী ছিলেন। সরকারি চাকরি ছেড়ে কাদেরের বাবা শিক্ষকতার পেশায় যোগ দেন। ওবায়দুল কাদেরের মায়ের নাম ফজিলাতুন্নেসা।
কলেজজীবন থেকেই রাজনীতিতে যুক্ত হন ওবায়দুল কাদের। ১৯৬৬ সালের ঐতিহাসিক ছয় দফা আন্দোলনে সক্রিয় ভূমিকা পালন করেন তিনি। ১৯৬৯-এর গণ-অভ্যুত্থানে তাঁর সক্রিয় ভূমিকা ছিল। ওবায়দুল কাদের একাত্তরের স্বাধীনতাযুদ্ধে অংশ নেন। তিনি মুজিব বাহিনীর কোম্পানীগঞ্জ থানার কমান্ডার ছিলেন।
ওবায়দুল কাদের ১৯৯১ থেকে ২০১৮ সাল পর্যন্ত ছয়বার নোয়াখালী-৫ আসন থেকে আওয়ামী লীগের প্রার্থী হিসেবে নৌকা প্রতীকে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে অংশ নেন। প্রতিবারই তার প্রধান প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী ছিলেন মওদুদ আহমদ। ১৯৯১ সালে পঞ্চম জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে প্রথমবারের মত জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে অংশ নেন। কিন্তু নির্বাচনে তৎকালীন জাতীয় পার্টির প্রার্থী মওদুদ আহমদের কাছে পরাজিত হন। ১৯৯৬ সালের জুনে সপ্তম জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে বাংলাদেশ আওয়ামী লীগের মনোনীত প্রার্থী হিসেবে নোয়াখালী-৫ আসন থেকে তিনি জয়লাভ করে প্রথমবারেরমত সংসদ সদস্য নির্বাচিত হন এবং ২৩ জুন ’৯৬ সংসদ সদস্য হিসেবে শপথ গ্রহণ করেন এবং একই দিনে যুব ক্রীড়া ও সংস্কৃতি বিষয়ক মন্ত্রণালয়ের দায়িত্ব প্রাপ্ত হন। তিনি ২০০১ সালের ১৫ জুলাই পর্যন্ত প্রতিমন্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব সৎ ও নিষ্ঠার সাথে পালন করেন। ২০০১ সালের অষ্টম জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে তিনি পরাজিত হন। এ সময় মওদুদ আহমদ বিএনপির প্রার্থী হিসেবে এ নির্বাচনে জয়লাভ করেন।
