I love the way Atkinson played each role differently in every series - from a bumbling fool with an inferiority/superiority complex to an arrogant and disdainful aristocrat to a long suffering, cynical, sardonic servant to a jaded and disillusioned voice of reason in the final series. Mastery.
Don't forget the Christmas special , not becoming Baldrick's cod piece and the there and back again in the time machine.
While Baldrick went from a reasonable, intelligent, quick thinking medieval peon into an utter moron of a private in the WW1 trenches
I didnt really like the first series
Perfectly put. Rowan Atkinson is an international treasure.
@@jacquelynejohnson9127And the Cromwell era version from comic relief in 1988
Rowan Atkinson once mentioned he really enjoyed the time of making the Blackadder, not acting alone (later in mr bean) but working with a team of fantastic members, you can really see the happiness from his face.
@@georgeealasaid8296 but still more blue than the stone of Galveston
@@georgeealasaid8296 the infanta was a younger daughter not in line for the throne. So i guess she used to go outside. No lines
"Deny everything, Baldrick."
I was already predicting how badly that could go.
Probably because of how Blackadder got into that mess...
"We didn't get any messages and Captain Blackadder definitely did not shoot that delicious plump-breasted pigeon."
@@Jedi_Spartan_38 "Do you wanted to be cremated, Baldrick? Or buried at sea?
No you're not
Blackadder is an amazing comedy. Never ages and never will.
Thank you, Baldrick!
AMEN
Well,besides the time period
@@growingstrong1009 lllllllllllllllllll
Never ages because its based in the past!
Blackadder gets smarter every generation while everybody around gets more absurd or stupid. Brilliant.
But even though each Blackadder is smarter than the last generation, their social status goes down with every generation lol. Prince to lord to prince's butler to foot soldier
@@alphahelix7948 captain
@@davehallett3128 Yes, but still on the front line.
I think the only time he doesn't get smarter is in Blackadder Goes Forth, though he also doesn't decrease in intelligence.

Such great writing
...... Miriam Margolyes is wonderful, how the “ burning catholics “ escaped censure !!!!!!?????......
@@sablebasilisk7998 it was 1986, less PC times.
I love how Rowan Atkinson turns from a rather attractive man when he has facial hair, then into a swollen pea when he has none
You’re absolutely correct 👍🏻
It's quite uncanny isn't it?
And loses a few years and wrinkles!
Plus a shiteload of make-up, I think
More like a sucked Spanish lime.
34:00 The timing of 'You'll get over her. I did. -So Did Baldrick' is PRICELESS 😆😃
Never realized how funny the words "sausage time" can be in the right circumstance
I was 13 when blackadder first came out. It was one of the few programs that I would religiously watch with my parents. I can remember watching it with my grand parents when I stayed with them too. The genius of the writing and acting meant it reached all generations
I have been watching the time team and one of the men is sir Tony Robinson who is truly a wonderfully funny and intelligent actor! Also starring in the Blackadder which I haven't ever seen before is Hugh laurie (Dr house) and rowan Atkinson (Mr bean). All great!
@@donnarouse5366 I love tony Robinson . Baldrick seems a strange character given his serious roles now
I like to imagine that Blackadders auntie wasn’t disturbed by the thingy shaped turnip because she has never seen a thingy.
@Rowan Aboat: I don’t know, she immediately remembered their wedding night, as “they had raw turnips on that night, too” and was quite glad to see it and started to eat it from the “right” end as well! ;)
@Esquire That was the joke, yes.
I would die a happy man, for one more Blackadder series.
Jim Broadbent is absolutely brilliant as the Invanta's interpreter. 😂 🤣 😂 🤣
Thank you . I've been wondering who the interpreter was
I’m teetering on the edge of pronouncing him the greatest character of the first series.
I thought the same thing, shows you the wonders a good actor can do with the lines.
Jimmy broadbent ? The sim racing guy
@@fartimusmaximus8710 I thought so, too and was like "what?"😂
"And what do we have for royalty?

GOLD.
A brilliant performance by Stephen Fry.
@@luisreyes1963 -You got that right.
The amazing thing about blackadder was no matter how predictable it was still hysterical
Hard to argue for a "best " season as they were all brilliant but for me the final episode of season 4 is one of the greatest pieces of tv history. The poignant moment of the big push was amplified by the fact that it was a comedy show.
I think Blackadder got better and better season to season, to reach perfection at the end.
80s were the best decade for comedy, Blackadder & Allo Allo hasn't aged a day!
Yeah back when comedy was alive.
The 60’s, 70’s and 90’s weren’t bad either!
@@johnhanson5943 and the 00s
@@liamguard5066 you mean Borat?
You forgot to mention Only fools and horses...
Miriam Margoyles is such a treasure
The translator helping in the bedroom 😂
I can't believe you cut off the scene from 'Major Star' right when Blackadder was about to describe George's drag act as less convincing than Tarzan going through Jane's handbag and eating her lipstick. That was one of Blackadder's funniest lines in the whole series.
Or Baldrick's "The Other Woman" scene. :)
The 80s in a nutshell for me... God how I loved Blackadder late at night in the weekends. It aired pretty late here in Norway.
Glad you enjoy our humour as much as we do ;-)
Brian Blessed speaking softly... Now I've seen everything!
" Im a complicated person you see auntie, sometimes im *nice*

Excellent stuff. Only sad thing is that it seems like yesterday that I watched all series for the first time. Was still at school at the time of series 1. Uni, series 2. Working for the first time, series 3. Married, series 4. Tired now - but still young at heart!
I love how the Encanta's eyes are definitely NOT blue.

Flashheart: Thanks bridesmaid, like the beard!
The other guys' faces too. Gold scene.
The first series was very ordinary, but once Richard Curtis and Ben Elton got together the following three were works of genius.
That's true, but the background of cruelty and disease etc in the first series was awesome juxtaposition.
I agree!
Some may say it was evolving . personally I thought the first series was excellent the forth was the best all getting better as they got older
12:34 Man I love this part so much. Despite literally being just black screen, it was more comedic than many skits I saw in my life.
I'm glad that i had a chance to watch all the episodes of Black Adder , some episodes in particular two or three times even more over the years.
Rowan Atkinson is a damn legend...
One of the best comedies I've ever watched.
Jim Broadbent as the Spanish interpreter was especially funny I thought.
"Die in combat with an enemy vessel". Boy, that's tough.
To me Blackadder stands out as the best sitcom of all time, arguably followed by Fawlty's Towers and Allo Allo, making English comedy without a shadow of a doubt the best in the world.
Allo Allo, really? It was good don't get me wrong but 2nd division imo.
Allo allo was overrated as was anything with rik mayall
@@thefilmsett Rik Mayall is in Blackadder haha.
@@venusasaboy yes but only a few episodes thankfully

18:22 ...best line EVER ....almost wish for Amnesia ...so l could experience it all ..all over again again ...followed by "RedDwarf" ,of course ... wonderful TV at it's best !!!
The first series has always been my favourite..............there......I said it :) The Queen of Spains Beard being the best episode ever! There is so much crammed into it!
Why not make her think you prefer the company of men?
What.....like the Earl of Doncaster???
Couldn't agree more. Once Ben Elton came in, it was reduced to one gag per series repeated over and over again
Only teen-age boys seemed to enjoy the series Elton wrote
'Bob, take a telegram. ...' LOL
Many of us oldies will appreciate the excellent impression of the late James Mason at 15.47.
Yes, I noticed that, wonderful impression.
its a take on Mason's character as a highwayman in The Wicked Lady..
One of my favourite comedies of all times..just love it
I can't count how many times I've played on the Switch while having Blackadder on telly in the background 😂😂 Mario or Zelda plus Blackadder make an interesting combo
Jim Broadbent as the interpreter 😂👍
Again, please
Just the two of us 😀
He's a brilliant actor!
The best comedy there ever was.
50 min.? Oh, just one clip- I said to myself.
Then I watched all of it.
I'm just enjoying it now in 2022! A little late but it's an ageless comedy 🤣
Me too! I just finished it in 2023 on Hulu for the first time!

One of my personal favorite moments from the series overall.
The Spanish translator is still one of my favorite characters in all of the series.

Thank you so much I'm so glad that I saw these things. I did not know the guy I saw as mr. Bean did so much more than that. Absolutely genius
I love the season one Baldrik quite a bit.
Dead as that squirrel.

It’s funny people who haven’t seen season 1 miss out on an important scene and it’s when he meets witches who are responsible for his entire legacy.
They are the reason there are other Blackadders and are destined to be King of the universe. It’s pretty insane looking back and seeing the bigger picture.

Blackadder version 1 was the funniest for me.
It disturbs me that the Spanish princess would consider asking the queen what her son is like in bed, like a mother would know something like that. Funny scene regardless.
Yeah, it was an odd thing to ask a mom. I think the comedic translator was the focus of the skit
Well only a mother would know since he was a virgin and the customs of royalty was enfanta mitly above the common folks.
