  • Earlier this year, I reviewed Notability & GoodNotes, and compared their features to tell you which one was better at that time. Both apps have since released major updates, so it's time to revisit this ongoing war.

      What’s it like?? I am a carpenter and i am always using a note pad and pen to quote jobs/write notes about a job I’m visting, then I get home and go through all my written notes and add up all materials etc. then do a little sketch of the job on paper, then do a quote using a app called joist which is great. Do you think I’d benefit from notability?? Can I add certain notes to the calendar so say I won the job could I put the start date in my calendar and attach the notes for that job??? Hope that makes sense. Cheers

    • @Paperlike
      @Paperlike  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Yes, there's a couple ways you can do that with Notability. If your note is final, you can export it as a PDF and add it as an attachment to your Event on the calendar.
      If you wish to continue taking notes on it, you can just share the Note as a link, and add the link to your Event on the calendar. This way, every time you want to open the Job on your calendar, you'll have instant access to the Notes through the link.
      Hope this makes sense 🙃

    As someone who tried both, I fully switched to notability for the better writing experience, in GN the pen is weirdly laggy while in notability it's so much smoother. Another thing is the way I can write continuously between 2 pages in my notes without having to split my notes between them (gives me more space btw). These things are not mentioned here in the vid (honestly unfair).

    Like what you said in 16:25, Goodnotes 6 added what Notability had which I liked: the ruler, dashed and dotted lines, colour coding and the eye dropper tool. The new linking tool in GoodNotes 6 is super useful, though I wish they had put in a pencil/ribbon tool in place of the eye dropper. Rectangular lasso like in Notability would also have been worthwhile. A great review. Thanks 🙏🏻

    I tried both in September 2023 for note-taking on the iPad. Goodnotes was waaaay too cluttered. There were all these options to customize pointless things like notebook covers. And the file organization system was in the form of an icon view, which I found cluttered. By comparison, Notability's UI is minimal and simple and easy to immediately understand and use right away. The files are organized in a simple list view. Much easier!

    I have seen a lot how the updates that turn Goodnotes 6 into a mess with the $30 thing. But as a first timer, does the GN6 would be a good app for a purchase or should I choose another app. Because desspite the lagging and everything it is still one of the best from GN5.

      Hi there, I would first advise to test both, just to get the feel of pros and cons of both apps. I personally love both, but I have to say that if the recording tool is the decisive factor for you, I'd go with Notability. It syncs both when you're handwriting and typing. Whereas GoodNotes' recording tool only syncs when handwriting.
      That being said, to be fairly honest, both are incredible apps and you will definitely not be disappointed by choosing either one of them 🙃

      Thank you so much for you response! :) I have tested both the apps and as you said, I also feel like Notability’s recording feature is better than the one of GoodNotes. What if I just buy the premium plan of Notability and continue using the free plan of GoodNotes? I am not sure if there is any limit. I know you can only create 3 notebooks but what if I just keep adding pages to that and use Notability for recordings. Am I right?

    In the video you mentioned that the "toolbar" in Notability stop existing. But this is for a reason, when you see the features section and tap the arrow to go to the ruler and the laser pointer, next to it there's a configuration tab called "toolbox" where it lets you re arrange tools and ALSO duplicate a pencil, pen, highliter or eraser!!! so its pretty much the same thing as the "toolbar" because you can simply tweak a pen and duplicate it :)) your welcome!

      Regarding notes side by side, this was a honest mistake on my part. As I ALWAYS use my iPad with Stage Manager, I could not open GoodNotes notes/folders side by side in-app... It would open them with stage manager by default. Whereas with Notability it does open notes side by side in-app whether Stage Manger is on or not. Sorry for that.
