I like how in the show Marlene goes "but Joel what would ELLIE decide" as though she bothered or would have bothered giving her that option to begin with.
True, it's not for Marlene to say that but it's still an important point to consider
This also happens in the game. The dialogue is different but the message is the same.
i was about to give a comment but it would kind of spoil a relatively minor part of the second game so i wanted to know if you've played it before going further. Have you?
The implication in both the show and game is that Ellie would want to make the sacrifice. "Being the cure" was what she believed was her purpose. The show dialogue is a little smarter in that respect in that it asks us to consider Ellie's thoughts in the matter unlike the game, but the answer is still the same.

The way Ellie laughed with the giraffe and how Joel looked at Ellie in the show. Beautiful stuff. I’m so glad we got this adaptation. It’s stuff like this that gives me hope for proper adaptations.

Oh for sure, this show is definitely a move in the right direction for video game adaptations and I'm really happy it exists but I do think the game is much better. The show skimmed over a lot of Joel & Ellie's bonding and it was harder for me to feel for their relationship in the show vs the game

@@maygacha4066 that's awesome you were able to buy into it naturally, but I promise once you play the game there are more events, and even during gameplay, that will build onto their bonding much more and I feel like the game really goes out of its way to show it and earn that relationship better if that makes sense. Not saying the show is bad!! This show was a fun ride and as a Last of Us game veteran who has played it multiple times, everything the show ADDS that's not in the game doesn't feel forced but feels like it was added with care and really feels like a fantastic addition that adds more weight to characters and the world that was much needed. But everything the show does when it's adaptating the game, it isn't bad by any means, I just think the game does it a bit better
Bummer they didn't leave in "i'm still waiting for my turn"...such a gut wrenching line that was so powerful in the game.

When Ashley Johnson was on in the beginning of the episode, did anyone else mistake her for Ellie simply because her voice is so iconically Ellie? I was like, "what is Ellie doing right now in the brush," had to remind myself that Ashley was someone else on the tv show lol

I think the actress playing the mother resembles the actress playing Ellie very well (face shape etc). Which made it really believable for it to be her child as she grew up. That was a nice touch, intentional or not.
I wish the finale was two episodes in length. A lot of it was rushed, but they did nail it.

All Gone (No escape) playing as Joel goes T-800 on the fireflies was amazing. I wanted more of that scene so badly.

Yes. This show didn't capture the brutality enough. You never see joel use a brick to bash in a soldiers face. And they left two of the nurses alive which i think a lot of the players don't do. So what, he kills all the fireflys but these two nurses are a step too far? They didn't capture his brutality.

Interesting fact- the mocap giraffe from the game died a few years back, but they used his son for the TV giraffe. He said he was honored and hopes his take on the portrayal of Giraffe 1, while different, stays tue to the source material.

Oh yeah, she definitely gave off a more cold feel in the show then she did in the game.
Honestly think it's just the changes in the lines. The show took out some nuance in the dialogue.
Notice the difference in how Joel shoots Marlene vs Pedro... Pedro is shooting a blank so he doesn't prepare for the kick, but if you really notice Joel, he leans into it, to control the shot and put her down. It is raw and targeted and intentional. I love it.

Obviously, the game told the overall story much better (it's the source, surprise!). But what the show was able to show in 9 episodes is plenty good enough to warrant it the best video game adaption to date.

It strikes me how Bella's and Ashley's performances are recognizably different, yet both interesting and compelling in their own unique ways.
Yeah Bella is a bit angrier and she is changing personality nuances far more than Ashley’s Ellie. The result is Ashley’s Ellie feels like more of her actually believes the lie at this point in time while Bella is mostly forcing herself to believe it. Either way - same result and very interesting
This episode made me realise that the Fireflies made the mistake of not telling Ellie the truth. Letting Joel speak to her one last time would have been the way to go, Ellie would have wanted to sacrifice herself. Holding him hostile was a big L
Really good point. They know how dangerous Joel is. But I suppose they didn't know how close the two of them got so probably didn't need to anticipate him going all murder hobo.
Joel would have killed them all anyway. Any choice that led to Ellie's death he'd have fought tooth and nail to prevent, whether she wanted it or not.

Joel made it clear that he'd always take her away from the Fireflies even if given a chance to redo it and knowing for sure she'd rather him not do it, indicating that he doesn't regret his actions and is unconcerned about how she personally feels about it. Joel did not care what she wanted, which is why he never asked her, and he KNEW she'd have wanted to go through with surgery anyway. Joel doesn't handle loss well, and after losing Sarah and then Tess, he resolved to never feel that way ever again. Joel's choice was ultimately a selfish one.
This implies that tv show Joel might be more brutal than game joel cause In the elevator you get shot at on the way but in the tv show Joel killed everyone except for the female doctors he went ballistic on the firefly soldiers no one shot at him when he went to the elevator
They made him more brutal on purpose to better tie into Part II. Part II tries to spin him off as a villain. There's a lot of ambiguity in the original game that gets completely thrown out the window with this adaptation. In the game there are journal/audiologs that definitely states that Ellie isn't the only immune survivor, which sets the stage for Joel knowing that any surgery isn't a sure thing for finding a cure. Likewise in the game he isn't blasting every soul in the hospital. I still think the show is a decent adaptation but I strongly resent Neil's hamfisted writing. The reason for the first game being so great was NOT because of his "genius".

There’s just less fireflies in the tv show compared to the game or they just never made it to Joel in time. When Joel gets Ellie out of the room in the game, alarms have gone off and the whole hospital has been alerted including everyone patrolling outside or in other floors, keeping in mind the hospital and surrounding area is massive and this is one of the Fireflies main bases, not to mention the shootout was at night in the game as opposed to daytime in the show. For example Abby and all of her friends (7 people all stationed at the hospital) did not know what happened until like 10 minutes later meaning there probably was a decent amount of people outside and around the hospital

We gotta remember how rare performances like this were in 2013. While there were examples of great voice acting in the late 90s and the 2000s, I believe the Last of Us set the stage for these big-budget storytelling games to come with its combination of more natural performances and motion capture, building on the foundation of the past Uncharted games.
Because it got a remake on PS5, but the 2013 original is still fantastic.

Omg the real VA of marlene doing the scene in a live show its come full circle although i prefer the game way of handling it compared to the show. This show is still the best video game adaptation ever
"You'd just come after her." That was the single most chilling moment of any video game I've ever played. I remember how shook I was at that moment playing the game release week 2013. The show had its flaws but I thought they did the ending some real justice. Seeing that scene in particular again years later had the same effect, even knowing it was coming.
Having played the game and watched the show, I think the show was better. I liked that in the show, Joel was not just some killing machine and that took out every person they saw. Both of their acting was brilliant in the show. I really can't wait for the second season

The hearing ability doesn't work on the highest difficult (which I believe it's how it should be played), though, but there rest is pretty accurate. XD
@@NeoZeta yeah listen mode is not available if you play on survivor and grounded mode. Grounded + perma death would be most realistic. But hell naw I’m not good enough a player for that💀
@@riverjame-sv9fo Modesty aside, I can say I'm good enough. I can play grounded easily with no deaths. But you really got to know the game well to reach that point. I used to play competitively online, too. So my combat skill is/was pretty toned, but in grounded you'll have to avoid a lot of combat anyway, if you want to live.

I liked how the show portrayed how Joel was warming up to Ellie but Ellie was now skeptical. Great stuff
Don’t get me wrong I love the TV series and glad there’s a season 2 coming soon but I have to admit that the pacing could’ve have been better. Giving Kathleen and her group two episodes and Bill and Frank an entire 1 hour+ episode (which I loved btw) would’ve been fine if the series had more than 9 episodes but since it doesn’t it made every other story beat and dialogue in later feel incredibly rushed (the effects we see greatest here). It also took away from some of Joel and Ellie’s bonding moments and having so much time spent away from them definitely weakened their relationship compared to the game. It’s a 10/10 show for me but it really could’ve used either longer episodes, 44 minutes? Seriously? Or just more episodes
What bonding momemts are you talking about, besides them just walking around killing infected? But anyways we should get shown more bonding in season 2.
@@thatboysnarly4471 there's a lot of moments of bonding that can be mentioned, like Ellie helping Joel as a sniper, Ellie jumping down the water trusting Joel to help her after Sam/Henry leave them, Ellie running away after she discovers Joel wanted to leave her, Ellie giving Joel Sarah's photo, Joel refusing to stand down to save Ellie as the fire flights get to them after she drowns... I liked the show but I missed some of these moments that made their relationship so strong and so meaningful.
@@thatboysnarly4471 We are not really going to get a lot more bonding in the second season if they follow the story of the second game, apart from the flashbacks. More bonding this season was necessary imo.

You get more better story by just watch ing the game’s cutscenes. They left a lot of details that were a big deal in the story.

Joel toured the fireflie to get info to where they have her while has a line that did work in the show cus he just shoots the guy that gave him attitude when he asks in the game the guy refused but Joel shoots him and makes him talk.
The last episode was just weak out of the whole show.
Yeah but I’m betting S2 opens with the perspective if one character who sees Joel’s choice in VERY black and white terms.

It wouldn’t have even taken much more time to include those crucial moments, interactions, and emotions in the show that really set the tone for why Joel is doing what he is doing and how its tearing him up inside making those decisions. I feel like even in the games cutscene you can see so much more emotion and so much more uncertainty in the faces of the characters. Even when Joel is leaving the elevator, the face he makes shows that he understands what he is giving up for the sake of his love for Ellie. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking. Love this freaking game.

It's "the look" at the hospital when Joel decides to take Ellie. That is one of the defining moments for the character.
Pedro Pascal did a phenomenal job as Joel, it's actually incredible just how well he managed to capture his mannerisms and personality. His performance was every bit as good as Troy's.
I love the dynamic between both actors in both formats. They each got eachother so well

One of the most powerful ending in any story telling.
It's basically the end of hope for humanity to restore the world in TLOU universe, because joel just killed the only doctor who can make the cure.
BUT, it's the beginning of a new chapter in Joel's life because he have ellie in his life, he found his new purpose.
The ONLY gripes I had with this show is the last line deliveries.
"You'd just come after her" from Pedro felt a little too neutral as opposed to Troy's.
"I swear" was perfect from both ends, but they cut that a little too quickly. In the game, Joel has more time to think for a second if he would actually tell Ellie the trith or lie to her. You can see him seem hesitant as to what he'll say. In the show its a pretty instant response and it felt a little awkward.
At the end of it all though, it's fuckin amazing. Can't wait for Part II to be adapted. The show and the game have their differences and I accept that
What parent wouldn't go to these lengths to save their child? This episode tore my heart out. Of course he wasn't going to let another daughter die.
One thing I think they missed a trick on in this scene is the way Joel grabs the watch that Sarah gave him when he says you need to find something to live for in the game version.
I think the actress for Ellie in the show did a great job, but man, Ashley delivers the lines with so much more punch.
The game made me cry, the show made me sob. Ellie is who I was at 14. Just someone who is confused with their own emotions and needed someone to understand her.

oh I played both games I know what’s coming and I’m still not ready :’( the show just brings it alive in such an intense way that it’s almost 10x more heart wrenching. Since you know the second game, that one part that sets the whole plot for the game literally left me silent and sobbing at the same time. I am 1000% not ready to see it in a tv adaptation

I still don't get why Bill and Frank's episode, two characters that didn't even interacted with the main story was a 1:30 lenth, but the finale was just 40 minutes.
But for what was there, it's perfect. Joel's suicide attempt is only mentioned briefly in the game, but him actually talking about it was to me the best scene. Indirectly saying how much Ellie means to him makes his choice at the end so much heavier.
And that hospital scene, that psychopath look on Joel's face and the main theme playing on the violin was amazing, it really gave the feel of the monster he can be. Too bad that he sealed his fate by killing that doctor though

I mean, the show is more focused on drama, world and character building. The last episode was pretty short, in my opinion, because it was pretty much going only off the source material, and didn’t really cut anything out. Bill and Frank I think was needed because of how it shows the peaceful life people can live, even in these apocalyptic settings, almost foreshadowing Jackson.
Cause the whole motif of the story is about how you and the people you care for can be trapped in a continuum cycle of violence, and the way this goes depends on the circumstances and the decisions you make. Bill and Frank's story is an example of a more compassion driven story under better circumstances and the proof that this is still possible in the world they're building, but impossible for the tainted story of Joel and Ellie.
Because the drones who made the show are "those" type of people, and it all entertainment is in the ground now, too interested in garnering critic points instead of making good shows.
I can’t believe that they show us those jiraffes but they didn’t show us Joel touching the watch just before he lied on that “i swear”. I loved the show btw

@@revampstudios5717 They talk about Sarah while walking on the forest in the game as well, Joel looking at the watch right at the end and the scene where Ellie gives him the picture of him and Sarah and they talk a bit about Sarah’s mother would still have been a nice touch in the show, very little details that make the ending more impactful.

It's amazing how Merle Dandridge has been playing Marlene since the first game. She also did the last of us on stage one night special, the last of us 2 in a flash back scene and now the series ❤️
The ending conversation felt so rushed as oppose to the game. It was badly paced imo. This is the end. Let the convo be slow, intentional, & let it be the forefront. Game ending is better then the tv show, based off pacing alone

They’re both crap lmao mediocre gameplay and mediocre storyline
The live action felt better, mainly because of the subtle face acting which couldn’t really be seen in the game as well, and I think that Pedro’s performance and even Bella’s are probably better than what was in the game, for this sequence at least, which isn’t an insult to the original actors but there’s much more to pick up on when it’s real people instead of voice actors with video game models
That "okay" means "I'm going to hold you to it. If I find out that you lied then...." It also means she NEEDS him to be telling the truth but Ellie is just so damn smart. She knows.

After having a few days to process the whole season, I can say the only disappointing thing was we didn't get enough interactions with the infected. When we had those scenes it was great. Great performances from the actors playing the infected.
Imagine if we had some scenes of the infected, raiders, and Joel and Ellie all trapped in a building. The humans would try to lure the infected towards their opponents.
That would have been great to see, especially in the university.
Both ending hospital scenes are so intense
The scenes they added in this episode were actually equally good as the game ones, the additions with Ellie's mom and the dialogue between Joel and Ellie about time healing were amazing.

The game did the ending so much better. I’ve loved this show so far but I can’t help but feel like the last episode rushed through the last hour of the game too quick. The dialogue from the game that was used in the show fell flat for me a lot of the time in the finale.
The real draw of this show to me is how they’re able to expand on things from the game while staying true to it. In the last episode it felt like they were just checking off things that happened in the game without fleshing it out more like how they did with Bill and Frank.
I do still like the game's version better, but 3/4 of the last hour is stealthing/combat through the hospital. An hour of that doesn't translate to a show format.
@@Alleggsander I don’t think the shootout should have been any longer. I think the time before they get to the hospital should have been stretched out with one last infected encounter like the game.
One more obstacle before they reach their final destination is necessary for the story in my opinion. I get why they skipped over most of the gameplay segments that’s fine but there should have been more time to spend with Joel and Ellie before the ending. And the dialogue they used from the game just felt a bit lifeless to me.
Episode 8 totally won me over and then 9 completely bolts straight for the ending scene they should have slowed it down a bit. Even adding 20 more minutes to pace it out better would have helped immensely. But this show would have benefited from one or even two more episodes.
All of the original ideas just for the show were great because they added to the source material instead of changing things in a way that hurts the overall story. Any new ideas they had should have gone in before they reached the end. More time to flesh out Joel and Ellie’s journey was needed in my opinion. Still a great adaptation but the ending did not hit as hard as the game.
And the way they just randomly threw around Gustavos music that was made for specific moments was a bit disappointing.
They used the all gone track while Joel’s shooting people but not when he finds Ellie after killing David or when he is carrying her through the hospital. That track is supposed to parallel Sarah’s death it’s what plays when she dies in his arms. The show didn’t focus on that moment of Joel carrying her enough.
But I gotta admit even the hospital shootout felt a bit uninspired and lame. Show us Joel actually being stealthy and playing to his strengths as an old grizzled survivor instead of showing us a montage of him walking out in the open down a hallway mowing down trained soldiers. Even the game felt more grounded in that section.
That scene should have been intense and thrilling to watch but it wasn’t. It shouldn’t have been filmed as a montage it should have played out as an actual scene where people who didn’t play the game might actually think Joel could die but he just strolls through the place like the terminator it’s not as engaging as it could have been. At least in the game you see Joel use tactics to kill everyone.
But all in all the show really needed one more episode like the 3rd or 6th that fleshes the characters out more before the final set piece.
@@Hardrive2677 I feel like an infected encounter would’ve felt unnecessary, how would that develop the characters further or highlight the themes of the episode in a meaningful way? It would’ve just felt like filler, it works in the game because it’s engaging action gameplay, but for the show it would’ve just felt out of place and served no real purpose for the story imo. I would honestly say the show has the better ending just based on the amazing subtle facial acting alone, it added so much that couldn’t have really been achieved through just voice acting and video game models, but that’s just my preference I guess. Obviously the show wouldn’t even exist without the game so that should always be considered, but I definitely do think the show improved on a lot of aspects because the medium of film allowed for that.

Personally I was really hoping they'd tie in the 'stepping on a tendril alerts the horde' concept and having that be the cause for them fleeing, nearly drowning, then being found by the Fireflies (similar to how it happens in the game). Having them immediately caught upon entering the city and knocked out by a flashbang did feel a little like something was missing.
One point I'd argue against is that carrying her in his arms is supposed to parallel Sarah's death. I always thought Joel holding Ellie and calling her baby girl after her viciously murdering David was the parallel moment. The last time he uses the term 'baby girl' is while he's losing a daughter, while he uses it in the David moment when gaining one.
@@Alleggsander I think there were two strong parallels to the opening of the game/show. Sarahs death absolutely connects to Joel calling Ellie baby girl. But Joel carrying Ellie through the hospital also parallels when Joel was carrying Sarah after she messed up her leg from the car crash right before she gets shot. It’s just to show Joel being put in another situation where he’s desperately trying to save his daughter.
The version of all gone that we hear while Joel is shooting the fireflies in the show is the same track that plays when Joel is carrying Ellie to the elevator in the game. That moment hits harder in the game for me because of that track being used at the right time.
I enjoyed the show. It didn't blow me away like it has most people but I am a fan of the game first and foremost--the most affecting video game I've ever played (I'm over 50 and have been plying video games since the 1970s).
I only played the game once though but it's stuck with me.
Watching this clip, as much as I was appreciating the acting choices made by Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, in my mind I kept thinking, "Man, the acting in this video game is REALLY good."
Pedro Pascal is good as Joel, but man Troy Baker just adds so much more to the character with his voice and motion capture. With every line he brings such a southern, brutal, charismatic feel to him. Kinda makes live action seem bland in comparison.

100% Agree. Pedro is a good actor, but some of his lines seemed flat compared to Troy Baker's portrayal of Joel. Granted, some of that could be chalked up to first impressions.
I almost wish they had actually shown the actors the game scenes before acting rather than keeping their parts solely them and not watching game footage. I think some of the lines just don't come out simply as powerfully and emotionally setting up the next game (next season) as well as the game. Thats why overall the game is just far better. Yet when youv played the game, coming to the show is like a new easter egg adventure trying to find the connections that they tried very hard to put (which they did great on). I think my main problem with the show is quite literally just script lines delerverance / emotion in them. Idk :)

I've just finished and this was the most perfect adaptation of anything I've ever seen. Casting original Ellie as the Mum, the original clicker voice actors, showing Dina and foreshadowing Abbie's fathers importance, featuring Left Behind, all the additional backstories for the supporting characters... it was so perfect. I'm sorry I ever doubted this. It really is my favorite game and I was so nervous they'd mess it up, but hats off to everyone involved. Truly phenomenal.
Golden Globe winning show. One of the best acted shows I've ever seen. And still I think the game is better. That's proof that it's a masterpiece

They did it. The mad lads did it. They pulled it off. Wish it was longer, the ending and whole hospital bit was only 20 mins but it was still cool. The “you’d just come after her” line was a bit wonky and how Joel shot Jerry was just… it was just too quick, no contemplation. Jerry was also too slow with grabbing the scalpel, there should have been more urgency! But yeah apart from that I’m happy with the ending lol.
I thought killing Jerry quickly worked really well for the show. In the game its the moment where you as the player have to "decide" to pull the trigger and move forward. The preceding fight isn't so out of the ordinary compared to fighting raiders vs in the show Joel already made up his mind and Jerry is just one more firefly in the way.
I agree 100% on the final line. Troy baker delivers it with such spite and disdain and this one is so deadpan. I've read other peoples comments saying that they were going for a "terminator" vibe of Joel being emotionless in that moment butnI just feel that approach is disingenuous to the source material. When i played the final scene in the game i had to use bricks and bottles to bash in the firefly faces and the rage it evokes is so much more telling of the love he has for Ellie. Don't get me wrong. This is the best videogame adaptation ever but when compared to the source i just felt the final scene was their chance to bring more emotion into the violence. Other people have said they're trying to show how 'joel was wrong' but the whole point of the game is that you share Joel's desire to rescue Ellie. Still brilliant though.

But I still agree that the show is one of the best game adaptations of all time. They did so much right. They followed the source material closely but also added a lot more depth to certain characters etc. I like the way they did everything and Pedro and Bella are amazing as Joel and Ellie. But to me there’s just two versions of Joel and Ellie now. I see both versions as being good. Neither one or the other is bad.

It was a good show, but it felt so rushed at times. That ending felt super rushed too. You don't have damn gameplay to get back to, slow it down add to it.

Marlene was so hypocritical throughout this whole thing, she kept saying: "Do you the right thing," but who was she to say what the right thing to do was.
She kept saying its what Ellie would want, but how could she know that when she deliberately denied Eliie the option to make that choice for herself.
It's almost like Marlene had put herself in the place of God, and that in her mind the end justified the means.
Thank you. Ellie had plans AFTER "saving the world" which means she was still expecting herself to live longer. At least Joel had a basis for his decision, however brutal.

What I really appreciate is that the scenes are shot identical to the game.
2 important things they missed: 1 - Joel running through the hospital with Ellie in arms, crying "i got you baby girl, i got you" while fireflies are shooting at him and alarm is sounding loud; and 2 - That slight detail of Joel grabbing his wrist, trying to touch the watch but avoiding it while saying "you keep finding what to fight for" was completely missing on the show or i didn't notice it.
Amazing adaptation but still not perfect, game ending was much more impactful and i have my wife to prove that, she didn't played the game, showed her the game ending after the show and she said so herself.
Ellie dropping the ladder was more clumsy in the show and actually feared Joel would get hurt with that. God I love the show so much

It seems to me in the show that Ellie knows Joel is lying to her face. Ellie starts out telling Joel her loss of Riley and hints she's ready to sacrifice herself. Before Joel can finish his lecture, Ellie interrupts by asking him to swear he's telling the truth. It certainly will drive a wedge between the two from that point on. Can't wait to see the rest of the story!

Overall, the game is much better but the show is a good adaptation. 8/10 for me.

Episode 1 and 2 were so good but they failed to reach those heights again. And the acting in the game is way better imo. 7/10 for me. Good adaptation but I’d rather watch an 8 hour CZcams cut of the game than this again.

Usually film adaptations of video games aren't very good but they did a great job with The Last of Us.
I enjoyed the show overall but every time they repeated the game line for line I'm underwhelmed cause I just compare it to the game which I prefer. The show was at its best when it had the same events but added its own spin on them. The Sam and Henry episode was the best episode to me for that reason.
The show is nowhere near as strong as the game. In the game, all the focus was on Joel and Ellie, while the show decided to focus on tons of side characters (who all ended up dying by the end of their episodes anyway), and consequently, Joel and Ellie in the show don’t feel as fleshed out. Not to mention, hardly any infected fights, and I don’t think Pedro crafted anything even once in the show. I liked the show overall (aside from episode 3), but it didn’t leave me with that gut punch feeling by the end of it that the game did. I watched the show with a non gamer and they loved it, but those of us who played the game can’t help but feel a bit sidelined.

I guess it's good that non-gamers get to experience this story. At the same time, it's tough because the voice actors in the game frankly do a better job and to a large degree, defined the roles themselves. idk, when I watch the live action stuff it sort of just has a relative blandness to it. And it pains me that Joel's accent is gone.
