Shell Model of Nucleus

  • The Shell Model of Nucleus is somewhat similar to the Atomic structure, in a sense that electrons that revolve around the nucleus in an Atom do so in discrete Energy levels / or Shells, wherein filling up of certain electron Shells lead to exceptional stability of the chemical elements. Such electronic configurations are known as Inert Gases or Noble Elements. These configurations correspond to certain atomic numbers.
A similar concept also exists in the case of Nucleus. There are certain numbers associated with the number of neutrons/ protons in a nucleus that have very interesting properties. These numbers are called Magic Numbers.
    Magic Numbers : 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126
Any nucleus which has number of neutrons/ protons that correspond to the Magic Numbers show exceptional nuclear stability, and abundance in nature. Magic numbers play a very important role as it corresponds to exceptional nuclear stability.
So we can say that these magic numbers are to the nuclear configuration, what the complete shell structure is to atomic configuration.
The Shell Model thus attempts to account for these Magic Numbers by a similar approach.
