I think the moment at 6:22 shows beautifully that you haven’t broken this dog by correcting her, or scared her in any way. She was corrected, listened and then immediately expected a belly rub. That’s a comfortable dog who’s understood that the correction was about the behaviour, not you asserting some stupid sort of dominance and you being generally aggressive and untrustworthy. Love it!

actually that can be a cowering position for dogs, not asking for belly rubs. in fact you can see that dog is stressed by the way its panting with its mouth stretched at the sides. in a few shots you can also see the tongue flick - another sign of a stressed dog.

true!! and thank you for saying this because it helps me remember the same thing about my dog! sometimes i worry he will become afraid of me because of me correcting as best i can, but he still comes up excitedly to me everyday and gives kisses and rolls over for belly rubs!! so i know he's okay, and he still loves me. man, dog training really is hard 😭😭😭 (especially if your puppy has some pretty intense behavior problems like mine does)

I searched CZcams to see if I could find a solution and wow how fantastic Will’s training advice was, it worked and this morning after two attempts to bite hard my boy is a different puppy. I tried to follow this advice a little while ago but my 5 year old daughter got upset thinking I was being cruel to her puppy, so at best it was a half hearted attempt. Today, I had a rare hour to myself. At first my attempts to stop the puppy (pug by the way, about 4 months old) were pretty fruitless. I think my advice is, if they still see biting/attacking you as a game, then you need to be more harsh. I was in a room with a lot of space, and it got to the point where I was pretty forcefully pushing him away, quite some distance. I never struck him, more of a very firm push, and he was never going to hit into anything, but I was getting stonger in my resistance to him biting. Less than 20 minutes later he was much more calm, not nipping me or bitting me, lots more licks and still a bit of teeth on skin but nowhere near what it was. We went out to a kids party and after coming home he was much better. A tiny relapse but with another firm push away he is as good as gold. I'm expecting to have to reinforce this in the coming days, but following the advice above the change is pretty remarkable. Don't be afraid to be strong if you need to would be my advice, so long as you won't physically hurt the dog. This bloke knows what he is on about. He's the dogs bollocks.

This video was so beyond helpful. My 6 month old German shepherd puppy exhibits intense mouthing and I was previously unable to achieve that “off” command. I quickly realized that while it may feel a bit uncomfortable giving an intense hard correction, once I exceeded my pups intensity she caught on very quickly. I was below her threshold of intensity before, and she wasn’t understanding that enough is enough. I will be incorporating this into training/play time every day! Thanks for the awesome content!

Now when the dog does the undesired biting you tap them on their side depending on the intensity they are acting up. If the active response does not affect them then you will need to intensify the response till they stop.

Also, good to see explanations on the dogs behaviour as it was happening. Sometimes most people don't talk about that and "home trainers" are left wondering if the desired behaviour is what should be happening or not.
i've been doing this with my pup, and he has been reacting the same way, barking from a distance and figuring out what's going on. Good to know it is a normal reaction and nothing to worry about too much at this stage.

This is unreal! My 8 month old boy is the most perfect pup! And has been a dream overall (with lots of work) but his excitement was crossing the line and the mouthing was getting too much and happening without trigger recently. This technique has literally turned that switch off within minutes! And he instantly stopped. We have not had ANY mouthing!! And he has become even more adorable. THANK YOU!!!

Absolutely brilliant! We have an 11 week old GSD that was driving us to distraction with playful biting. The saddest part was it was making my 8yr old daughter start to feel nervous and no explaining that he was trying to play worked for her. I used the touch correction and had exactly the same response from my dog as in the video..!! This guy absolutely knows what he’s talking about!! Thankyou Will for yet another informative, honest and educational video! 👍🏻

^^^ This, 100%. I've been training dogs since the early 70s and this is exactly how I train and people are always amazed at how quickly I can change a dogs behavior AND how quickly the dogs bond with me and want to be with me.
Also, listen to what he said about the 'No' command. Again, I've been saying this exact thing as long as I've been training. It simply means, 'Stop doing what you are doing, do something else'. Once the dog understands that concept, the relationship with your dog will change for the rest of your life. No is the absolute PERFECT command. I do not use 'leave it, stop, don't touch, blah blah blah'. I always use 'no', because it means, 'stop doing what you doing, do something else'.
A big thumbs up and a new subscriber. Thank you.

Over my 66 yrs of life I've had many puppies and children that I raised. With puppies I corrected biting behavior by using a stuffed toy. Every time they attempted to bite I would put the toy in their mouth. After a few days they learned when excited they would grab the toy and bite it . They kept this reaction for their whole lives never once biting a human. ❤️

We adopted a very sweet, low-key, year old Cane Corso from a shelter six weeks ago. After a couple of weeks getting comfortable with us, he started acting out. We fully understand some acting out is to be expected, but this is extreme. It's very much like the GSD in this video - but 100x more intense. We have dealt with a myriad of behavioral issues with rescues over the years, but nothing has prepared us for this.
There doesn't seem to be any outward aggression in his motivation, but there is dominance, and he has no boundaries with people or with other dogs. Once he's in an over-stimulated state, any and all attempts at corrections are met with an exponential escalation of the bad behaviors, including but not limited to hard mouthing, jumping, lunging, etc. It's like he gets possessed several times a day. Otherwise, he's the same sweet dog we adopted. Truly, a case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
Most of it is aimed at me and our senior dog. He tries to bite our girl's back legs, pounce on her, and knock her over, so we have to separate her the moment he starts getting worked up. Lately, I've been taking the brunt of the damage... he seems to respect my husband a little more than he does me, but not by much. My arms are pretty bruised up, and his bites are getting harder. While he has yet to break the skin, we're talking 700psi on a 61 year old arm. It's just a matter of time.
In general, the attacks are getting progressively worse. We've tried using the techniques used in this video, but any attempt at corrections or training exacerbates his stimulation level. We tried daycare today to help socialize him and tire him out, but we were told to pick him up early because he showed no boundaries with the other dogs. We can't go back until that changes.
What do we do??? We need professional help... this is way beyond our combined experience and knowledge, not to mention our mental and physical limitations.

You're videos are the best. You cut to the chase, show examples and explain how and why it works. This just changed everything, my hands were getting so cut up from my 9 week old puppy biting I found myself getting angry with him. So I searched your videos once again and found you had one on puppy biting. Even tho he wiggles around a lot and tries to bite me still, he can't get me with this hold of his collar. I wait for the relaxing second and reward him. He's starting to understand and doing better everyday with this technique.
I've also been teaching him "leave it" with food placed in front of him and making him wait, "leave it" until I say it's ok... I'm hoping it'll transfer over to anything I don't want him to bite, eat, or get into. Like my hands and clothes!! You're videos are my first go to everyday... Thank you!!

@@semper9565 you shouldn’t hate your puppy. Your pup is very young and it doesn’t understand. If the biting is that bad, you should either try to train it yourself, or get it trained by someone else. I’ve been bitten by my puppy lots of times and blood came out 80% of the time. A puppy’s intention is not to hurt you, sometimes it’s because the puppy’s happy to see you, it’s also because it’s teething, and if the puppy wants to play. Also, you shouldn’t keep your PUPPY outside, or else it’s not going to learn. You should either let it in your house and close the doors of rooms you don’t want it in, or put it in a cage. Puppy’s NEED to be disciplined, or else it’s going to get worse. A tip is to tap your puppy every time it bites you. Not hard, but hard enough for it to understand that it’s not good to bite. And just keep doing it until your dog stops. I know it’s hard, but whoever you are, you got this. But please don’t hate a 2 month old puppy, because my 6 month old puppy bites me, but I still love her :)

I just bought a yorkiepoo, 6 pounds, because he was terrorizing his family and they were afraid he would hurt the kids. At a year old they couldn't get near him if he had anything in his mouth. He also gets crazy mean at corrections and draws blood.
Within 3 weeks i can now take things away from him using the hold collar technique (because it was the only safe way) and I'm glad to see that it is an actual technique. I also substitute a high priority toy for whatever he has, that has helped.
He's much better all around but still gets crazy at times and it's hard to get near him to grab the collar without getting bit. He's not "love biting". So I'll just keep at it, the change isn't instant because he has a year of bad behavior to correct.

Use a lead to it's fullest, hold onto the lead, try think of it in the way where your not waiting and looking for the dog to stay calm for a short second but your actually 'forcing' the dog (with least amount of pressure, as video explains) to get in that position. The passive way he used by holding the collar is sort of what I mean. You will notice the trainer pretty much put the dog in that sit position to wait nicely.
One way to look at it is 'do not give the dog any other options'

Always appreciate your videos Will…. Many thanks.
Over the past months since discovering your site, I’ve learned much…. and continue to do so.
Recently retired from the cockpit in Abu Dhabi, I now find myself raising a now 22 month old female Golden Retriever (Sandy) here on the island of Phuket in SW Thailand.
There is only Sandy and myself living in the house.
Over the past 20 months, Sandy has leaned to be very calm and relaxed when at home. BUT…. whenever someone else comes over to the house, she turns into a little Devil-Dog. She becomes so incredibly excited and happy to see someone else that she always wants to jump up on them and mouth them.
It’s almost like she’s bored out of her mind having to look at just me all day….. and wants my guest to rescue her…..Hahaha.
When Sandy does jump up on a guest, I try to pull her away and just let her sniff the visitor…. as we go through the introductions.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work and Sandy will continue to jump up and mouth my guest….. which is when I again have to pull her away.
On most occasions I will have to attach her lead to a secure hard-point, away from my guests. That’s when the non-stop Barking begins…..
Whenever I have to leave the house, I always make a point of trying to take Sandy with me, so that she can interact and socialize with other people.
Both Sandy and I are learning together how to get through this….. but Damn, she’s a lotta work sometimes….. Hahaha.

Tell your friends that come to your house to TOTALLY IGNORE HER...never EVER give affection to an excited ..stressed scared or nervous dog... that means not saying hi...not touching her etc.... Id suggest having a long house lead on her so you can give a correction....teach her to go to her "place" command..have a blanket or elevated cot for her to go to....Have a friend come knock on your door so you can train her . ...Or ...you could also have a bag of treats at your door ... your friends can do the "scatter " method...where they toss a few treats onto the floor AWAY from them and the entrance....and they calmly walk in and sit down... they still need to totally IGNORE her until she totally calms down including giving no eye contact.....I live alone out on a farm and my dogs don't see many people either.........Excitement !! Exercise before company comes helps with the training too...Could be worse !!.. Happy.is better then being overprotective and aggressive but it does need to be addressed!!!....I'm sure Will will advise..

After "psh"ing him and doing the movement at this sides, he kept coming back to bite me and play with my trousers' laces. I kept "psh"ing him, and he kept coming. So I corrected him with bigger force, but he kept coming, and every time he came, he came more aggressive and then attacked me twice on both hands (drew blood). I've been bitten before by a dog and had to get stitches, so I know that he really attacked me.
It seems that this correction makes him aggressive.
What did I do wrong? How can I correct this? Holding the collar doesn't work either with him. We have been doing the collar method as well as the flip on belly move for the past 6 weeks, but his behaviour didn't change at all.

If he didn't stop, i'd correct him again but take/direct him to his bed and get him to lie down and wait for about 30 seconds. When he does that, release him and praise him. Repeat. He soon got the message that mouthing at me meant forfeiting some time with me.

At 14 months old its not puppy biting, its a learned behaviour that probably needs looking at more deeply. Puppy biting needs to be nipped in the bud by 6 months old coz at 6 months adult teeth and adult jaw pressure is in place. As the biting wasnt addressed effectively at puppy stage it is now a learned behaviour at the teenage stage and needs addressing differently than how it is being addressed in the video with a dog that is at puppy stage. Maybe look at Wills other videos that address aggression.

And she hates being told what to do... But now I know I'm doing the corrections better and she's listening. I'm so proud of what we have already accomplished and I can't wait to accomplish more with her! My sweet little crazy lady Ophelia! ahaha! All because of great videos like yours!

I’ve tried this technique a couple of times on my 15 week working cocker spaniel but it seems to aggravate her more and make her aggressive, to the point that I worried that I was going to need to apply too much force with the active command. I’m worried that it isn’t puppy biting she’s displaying. Sometimes she’ll be playing and then all of a sudden turns (she’s not resourcing guarding and I’m not trying go take anything off her). If I use this command she gets worse to the point she’s launching at my arm or leg and I put her in her crate to calm down and nap.
Am I doing something wrong? I really want to get it right before it becomes a learned behaviour for her when she’s older

Experiencing a similar issue myself with a lurcher of 16 weeks. Worried to go too far with the active command. His intensity just seems to max out to the point he's jumping at me and barking.

Your methods are incredibly effective! Started using them 4 weeks ago on my 6 mo chocolate Labrabull. It's like all of a sudden I was kind of speaking her language. Everything just clicked!! Thanks so much Will! 🤗

They haven't seen my dog yet. He's a year old and it's getting old tbh. This definitely will help me with my dog.

I’ve already started to implement these techniques with my bouvier German Shepherd mix and she’s responding well too it even after only 12ish hours. Thanks so much for the video and info!

Thanks so much for this. I have a 9 week old who gets so easily over excited. Within 2 mins I had her behaving and was able to strikerub and play with her with no issues. Hardest subscribe I've ever done.

I really needed this. My 3 months old Bernese has my arms looking like a tiger mauled me. He is so adorable, just doesn't realize it hurts.

This is great!!! By far the best video I’ve seen on how to correct the biting and mouthy play. We have a 9 month old Goldendoodle and he is EXTREME with the play biting (or protest biting when we say “no” to something). He doesn’t respond to “no” the majority of the time and I tried this with him and he responded almost instantly. We’ve got lots of work to do but this video was SO helpful!
