Sometimes you have to fight back against bullies if you don't want to get bullied. Bullies hate targets that put up resistance which is why they go after people who don't fight back. If fighting back will get me a detention then i'd very much prefer detention over a lifetime of continued bullying.

What changed their minds?
@@VanillaLimeCoke Michael J. Fox was their first choice to play Marty, but when it looked like he wasn't going to be available, they briefly hired Eric Stoltz to play Marty instead.
Unfortunately, Stoltz was significantly taller than Fox, so the actor they originally hired to play Biff (J. J. Cohen) didn't seem physically imposing enough to bully him, so Cohen was recast as Skinhead and they hired the much taller Thomas F. Wilson to play Biff instead.
Then suddenly, Michael J. Fox became available, so he replaced Stoltz as Marty (after they had already recasted Biff).
So had Michael J. Fox been casted as Marty from the start, they probably wouldn't have bothered recasting Biff since Cohen was sufficiently taller than Fox.
