The ancient coin market is not as sensitive to third-party certification as modern coins. After all, these coins have been collected for centuries, and ancients collectors tend to be indifferent to third-party services, or even hostile to it in rare cases. Generally, if the coin can be pedigreed to a known collection or established dealer (a few coins from Harlan J. Berk in Chicago appear in this video), authenticity is not a worry. That said, for the exceptionally rare coins NGC or ANACS certification can be an added layer of assurance.

Antoninianus is a denomination put into effect by Marcus Antonius aka Carcalla. They were supped to be worth twice the amount than a denari, but it was basically a scam by carcalla to usually only use one and half times of amount of silver instead of twice the amount.

Great assortment of Roman Imperial coins. The Gallienus Antoninian is an interesting one. Maybe this coin is fully silver plated which is a rare conditon, or this is a very early one (around 253/55) with a solid silver content. Anyways, very informative and entertaining , thanks for taking us along ! Happy Easter to you nd your family ! 🐤🐥🐣 Greets from GER, U.
P.S. Double denarius and Antoninianus are two different terms for the same meaning (value of two denarii).

Hi Ben. I bought my copy of Van Meter at OPC, 20+ years ago. My ancients focus is on the Severan Dynasty, the Gallic Empire, short lived emperors and some early republic coins. Great video btw.

I also collect Roman empresses and princesses in general and Lucilla in particular. It’s a great way to collect Roman because the women both scarcer and less expensive. It also allows focus on what it is a truly overwhelming series. I’d also recommend the 5 volume set by David Sear for identifying Romans. Finally, I don’t have that particular Lucilla type so IF you decide to sell it please me know.

Double denarii bacame antoninianus under reign of Caracalla. All seem to have that radiate crown.
