😔 I already tried this with my Toyota Corolla 1996 but the motor is kind of messed up anyways it sounds like a lifter tick and it’s leaking oil only has 162,000 miles on it pretty sure because it was just sitting for so long time the seals have just gone bad
You welcome 💯.
In my 96 Grand cherokee I had rattling under the hood. It was the PCV valve rattling enough I could hear it. XD it's stupid how such a cheap part causes so many issues. XD
Maaan, Scotty I'm going to watch your videos even more now. I just bought a 2009 Honda CRV for 6,900 cash! 150,000 mi. It's running great.
It has a timing chain🙂 You said that helps a car run forever! That's what I need. I'm going to use all your tips and plan to take this car all over the US!
The front seat lays ALL the way back so I can sit in the back seat and stretch out & recline under my sunroof.🌝 I hope I find a video for replacing the PCV valve on the CRV.
Every car I get ends up burning oil. This one isn't now, but, maybe it will after a while. I want to be ready. I get ripped off all the time from garages.
L❤VE what you're doing sharing your great knowledge. Thank-youuuu !!
@@crj5106 and garage mechanics never tell us how easy some things are to fix! I hope you get your car fixed.
Careful when removing the PCV valve as the grommet is likely brittle and can break and fall into the crank case. Happened to me.
Man my heart sank reading this…that would suck !
Did u get it out? Dam bro
Almost happened to me today, remove the pcv on my 11 pilot. When I pried it out, part of it stayed in the engine
Fffffffff
What did you do
Lol yesterday i changed this on my 06 civic. It even cleared up a check engine light for the catalytic converter
My 06 Civic very slowly burns oil, I'll definitely look into this.
The mythical check eng light
Do you remember what code is was by any chance
@@winterssiege4624 sorry i dont
If it's a cat code probably P0420
Yup. One of the most, if not THE most, forgotten about and neglected item under the hood.
And one that is not serviceable on almost all new vehicles! But on a 2000 Honda, maybe?
Good to know! Knowing about Scotty's channel is like money in the bank. 😀
True
Thats how REAL mechanics operate, we get sick of dealing with stupid maintenance issues the owner is supposed to know about. Even with the access of information through technology. Some how people are so ignorant of their own Accord.... Haha Honda joke .... Anyways yeesh hahahahaha
I tell people about it all the time and unfortunately most of the people just blow it off like yeah yeah yeah what do you know🤦🏻♂️ well here’s what I know. I grew up in the auto parts business and I’ve sold thousands of PCV valves. Nobody is more aware than I of scams that auto repair business is perpetrate. Watch Scotty and don’t rely on crooks.
@@raisethecolours Don't worry some people like to repair their own cars but we're never the majority of car drivers.
@@ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx getting far and fewer in between we are . Good opportunity to make money. Unfortunately people are too dumb and dont want to spend money until the car wont move. Nominally its too late by then. No point in touching it cuz there will be near future issues. Beat to find people that pay and buy their own parts mostly
Scotty: find a trusty mechanic like me, that will fix your car problems
Also scotty: mechanics dont want you to know this.
He's not wrong. A legitimately honest mechanic is hard to come by. The business thrives on duping people, because people just can't be bothered to learn even the basics of how vehicles operate, and basic maintenance. So, someone goes to a shop with a concern and they very often times get taken advantage of.
This is why I'm failing working at AutoZone, I refuse to oversell customers on parts they don't need / I don't push people to buy things they don't want.
Apparently treating customers how you would want to be treated when you walk in the door isn't the right thing to do anymore :/
Thank you. My grandfather never taught me to work on cars because I am a woman. But I have always wanted to be able to fix them, as I am an admirer of most 80s vehicles and many come with their issues. You make it quick and to the point. With each piece of advice, my knowledge will only grow. I didn’t even know how to check the oil about a year ago.
what videos did you watch to learn, I am also a woman wanting to know how to fix cars
USA needs more honesty
Good luck with that
You ain’t kidding. Bunch of weasels and low lives, who cares about morals, principles and integrity I guess

My vw's valve is huge lol. Leaked and got oil covering my MAF which for some smart reason was at the bottom of the intake. Cleaned it all up and runs 100% again. Not bad for 180k miles
I wish there was a Scotty Kilmer for everything else in life. Homes & DIY, Computers, the whole shebang. It would be so amazingly helpful.
This guy is like robin hood 🤣 saving us money 👍🏽
I know right😁💰👍
Call him savin hood
Because mechanics don’t change PCV valve periodically?
He is A modern-day Robin Hood.
Toyota decided to put the PCV valve for my 2011 Venza under the intake manifold. So a simple replacement becomes a pain in the butt.
That just Toyota doing what they do best and over designing their cars
In other words, buy a 94' Celica instead.
2AR-FE or 2GR-FE engine? On my 2AR, painfully difficult on the RAV4, harder than on the Camry because the suspension seems to be more in the way.
I think of Venzas as stretched RAV4s.
Nice work Brother Scotty
@@SeanPopifyon the 2gr, the PCV is on top of the engine. Easy peasy to replace.
Scotty spitting facts like always
You dont need a new engine. Just new seals and rings all throughout engine. New sensor seals. And while it's all apart take everything and have it machined and replace all hoses. Should be a few dollars less than a new engine.
My mechanic cured a rough idle by replacing a collapsed PCV.
If it’s a Honda, it could also be the vtec solenoid
If it were a Honda, it would have cost you an Arm and a leg. That's why Scotty doesn't own a Honda... Ever noticed that.
If it’s a Honda, pray it’s a non-vtec Honda lol
@@whitegr86 True
Depending on what type honda. The hondas that have the k20s motors and k24s are pretty tough and great motors easy to work on. Huge aftermarket and most parts are more than one or two models so easy to find parts. My toyota parts are double price and last just as long.
You don't know what yur talking bout
Replacing a PCV valve is not as easy as it used to be on some vehicles. I've got a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The PCV valve on that is located beneath the intake manifold, That meant I had to remove the manifold to reach it. That, in turn, meant I had to remove the throttle body and since the throttle body also has a coolant line running through it, it meant I had to plug up the respective hoses leading to and from it. There was also part of a wiring harness that was attached to the bottom of the manifold which had to be moved aside.
As usual, Scotty's always looking out for us.
Love your stuff!. I got a 2000 mustang v6. I bought for 3000. A/C condensation leak on the O2 sensor.. I ran 1/4 inch hose into the drain then wrapped it underneath the firewall. No more stalling problem.
Scotty is Always saving us money and vehicle repair headaches
Good looking out Scotty I haven't thought of that in years kudos!!🧰🙏👍🍺
But if the piston rings are worn, causing "blow by", the pressure inside the crankcase can force oily thick vapors out and then get sucked through the PCV valve gumming it up. Even worse, the same extra oil going into the cylinders will carbon up the engine.
Replacing the PCV valve is part of good maintenance, but if your rings and valve seals are shot ya got at least a partial rebuild on your hands.
Props to Scotty though!
You can try stp in the oil to rejuvenate the metal rings 😉😉 before you open the engine....
If that doesn't work you use thicker oil
From 0w 20 to 5w 30
Or. Even thicker 10w 40
If it's still not working all of this done step by step
Then you can try putting non synthetic oil 5w 30 and changing it every 3 months or 3000 km,
If it's still not working you put 10w.30 non synthetic
If that's still doesn't work well your screwed 🤣🤣🤣
Scotty did say you "might only need".
@@michaell3711 I'm not Scotty. Try again. Sometimes comments get misdirected to me. Don't know why.
When I bought my Grand Marquis it was going through oil like crazy. It was the pcv valve, but I had to get the Motorcraft one, the cheap one was worse than the old worn out Motorcraft valve.
Outstanding video and presentation
Wow, this saved my life!
This was the cause of massive exhaust smoking on my 94 Camry about ten years ago. $3 fix.
Except trying to explain why labor is so high to replace to Pcv on Nissan under the intake.
Same with my Corolla quite the pain to get at.
My H16 (2015 4-cyl) Nissan has spark plugs under the air intake, the PCV is, fortunately, side-mounted. Now, all of my 2AR-FE and 2AZ-FE Toyota engines... They're buried deep. Insane placement.
My 04 cavalier doesn’t have a pcv valve. What are your thoughts about an oil catch can?
Maybe - 2.2lL
Right rear corner of the valve cover.
There's one somewhere. You just have to find it.
@@robertthomas5906 that's where's it's at. It just that the style of it is the elbow less style. So it just looks like a hose running to it.
@@robertthomas5906 that's what she said 💀🤣
That's what everybody is doing now with Mustang GT's that are supercharged.
Who wants to re-burn that horrid air.
Look up 2006 silverado 4.8 pcv.
PART OF the valve cover.
Work around, still around $10.
Put one in line, instead of changing valve cover, ask me how I know...
You'll also feel performance improvement with your engine by simply replacing a bad PCV valve. My dad did this to my 89 corolla and heck, engine ran smoother
Again Scotty, good point. The PCV valve, radiator cap & gas cap are out of sight / out of mind. 〰️🌊⛽😥
Godbless Scotty,he definitely reserved his place in paradise !
Will surely be disappointed if there are no cars in paradise!
@@fredsigey2917 you right my friend 🤣😂🤣😂
39 mechanics have disliked this video.
Be careful about removing some pcv valves as well. If your pcv valve is anything like mine was, you have to replace the entire valve cover which comes with the pcv. If you try to take the pcv valve off and put a new one on, you're in for a wild surprise later...
I have a 2005 S60 Volvo. Unfortunately my PCV was a little tougher to get too!
Unfortunately the wonderful engineers at Toyota designed the PCV valve in my 2011 Matrix to be underneath the intake manifold. You literally have to pull off the hoses on the throttle body, disconnect the fuel injector rail and then remove the manifold. All that to change a part that cost around 15 bucks!
I don't know where we'd be without Scotty!
For Hondas it’s not always the PCV valve they are other factors to burn oil
Sometimes you can even clean out a sticking PCV valve with some carb cleaner and make it as good as new. As long as the rubber seals holding it in place are good, there's no cracks or visible damage to it, and you can hear the thing rattling when you shake it, you're good to go!
They are usually just so cheap though… why not just buy a new one if you have the time to get it?
@@Oregon8456 why waste resources when something still works...
@@The_Noticer. because sometimes things go wrong and break down early, and when they do, your mileage goes down.
On my stupid Ford Contour, the $7 PCV valve was extremely hard to get at to replace. Genius design!
This is like the fifth one we've watched now with you Scotty and my three year old says why is he screaming like that
This guy is amazing!
Driving a 94' Celica is Amazing. That's why Scotty and i are millionares driving a 94# Celica with NO Stupid car payments. Do the math.
Failed smog test, only replaced PCV... PASS SMOG... got offered a job as a tech!!
We are in Germany and I have a 2005 Opel Astra 1.8 ecotec. From what I've read it doesn't have a PCV valve. The engine is burning oil but not in the combustion chamber. It has a little seepage fron the crankcase gasket but there are no oil leaks.
Did mine yesterday in like 20 minutes because of this short video. 284,000 miles and it was likely the original . We'll see if the oil burning slows. Either way,it needed to be done. Thanks Scotty.
Seeing this video after it was released by Scotty made me order two PCV's for my wife's 2005 Toyota Matrix which is at 270+K kms, and my 2007 Nissan Altima SE V6 with 181+K kms. I have saved a lot in labor costs just by following Scotty's advices. Thank you Scotty. If ever you get back to Buffalo or Toronto area, dinner's on me.
You may need a little cheap 94' Celica on Craigslist that i paid $600.00 for. No Stupid Car Payments and it runs like a Top!
I need to change mine on my 2012 Camry. Had the part for 6 months but I have to jack up the car and replace it from underneath.
Thank you Scotty
When ya got your oil changed at a mechanic shop they would check the PC valve.
The chains that do oil changes never did.
Thank you Scotty ❤
Scotty you're the best thing that happened to the CZcams/ auto industry. Thx for this fix
When I come across your videos, I watch them. It brings me back to when my teacher would put ur videos on for us to get a good understanding of what we were learning in theory
If you don't know when it was last replaced just replace it as it is a very cheap part. If you want to test to see if it is wonder or not just shake it and you should hear a rattle inside. If you hear nothing at all it is not working and replace it as it is clogged and stuck. Ifyou car is har dto find parts for or you are just a cheapskate you can soak it in degreaser fluid or use break cleaner or carb cleaner and soak it and let it sit in the fluid. It should remove all the sticky gunk up stuff and it should now move freely inside and hear a rattle. Best just to get a new one unless the new ones are the cheap plastic ones which many of them are and the old one is metal. The metal one can last forever if you clean it. It doesn't get brittle and break like the cheaper plastic ones they are all made of these days.
Scotty, how many tank full of premium gas would it take clean out carbon? SEEN YOUR VIDEO ON PREMIUM FUEL.
I wonder how often these need replacing
Time after time, your the best!!
I was just looking up this same question in the GTO LS1 forums the other day. It was in the how much will a LS stroker kit cost section
[great tip, so cheap, major fix.]

You can usually just spray those things out with brake clean also
Cleaning doesn't prevent future failure. Under $10, just drop a new one in... Cheap insurance.
Just replaced my spark plugs, coil packs, pcv valve, pcv sensor and map sensor on my 2014 Hyundai veloster with 98k miles. This car is surprisingly easy to work on even though there's practically no room under the hood. Bought the car new and now runs like a champ. She was hunting for gears on hills got terrible mpg and started to not want to start. The map sensor was all gunked up and the check engine light never came on. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong.
Scott, you and my dad would have been two great machines toghether. ❤
And also scottie I had a 1993 Ford escort and I put some new value stem seals on it . And it never smoked again or used a drop of oil
You never need a new engine. Can always be fixed unless it's melted.
2015 Nissan HR16-DE 4-cyl engine... Bad PCV at 63k. Replaced and MPG went up, oil stayed cleaner longer. $8.
I now change PCVs on all my cars with spark plugs or when I open stuff up (throttle body, air intake cleaning). Cheap insurance.
Had one break on me in a 2009 lancer, replaced that sucker and went from burning a liter of oil a week to nothing and have put on another year and a half of driving since and not had any issues since
@ScottyKilmer I have a 2001 v6 camaro. And it's burned 3 coil packs. What all do I check to prevent this from happening? Thank you
My car does not have a PCV valve. It has an oil separator and a flame trap. Same idea, though. Older Chrysler cars also used an oil separator that needed replacing every so often.
Cool ! I had no idea it also reduced emissions , I thought it was just to counter act the effects of Blow By
Excellent. I’ve heard this but you make it so simple. Thank you 😊
General motors had the bright idea when they had that 3.1 multi-port fuel injection motor, they put that PCV valve way underneath the intake with a non flexible hose on it so it can cost you a bunch of money to replace that one
😁🎵🎸👍👍👍👍Scotty is going down in rhe LEGENDS BOOKS !!!!!!!!
Wow, that is very good to know. My 04 Maxima started needing a quart of oil every 3 months and I changed the oil like a champ on that car. Well now I know in the future. Thanks Scotty. I know the mechanic shops are like "Damnet, we usually charge labor for rebuilds for this". 😊😊
Let's take care of our scotty
Those things been around since early 70's. I always carried several for trips. Expensive lesson learned when young. They are cheaply made
... when lwas a young mechanic.... Scotty will be forever young 'cos he's young-at-heart !
This might be the issue with my 2001 Corolla. I'll look into it. Thank you bubba.
Any good mechanic would be happy to inform every person they could... dealerships on the other hand, are all about money.
Not true! Both my mechanics never mentioned this to me about my oil consumption & one of them has enough expierence & certifercites to be a Master Tech. Reason why I love watching Scotty.
@@dbzownz12345 so you are in agreement with me. You don"t know a good mechanic.
We thank you, internet dad.
Great Scott!
Had this issue with my 2008 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 2.0T. kept giving me error codes for a lean system on bank 1. Changed the PCV valve and it ran wayy Better but there was now a high idle in my car. Wasn't that high at all. Just a hundred rpms higher but it still gave an error code. I changed the purge valve canister and got it to run smoothly again!
But scotty you forgot to go !!!!UUUGGGHHHH!!!!😂😂😂😂
Mercedes PCV.. 800$ for C/GLC 1500$ CLA/B/GLA
A lot of late model cars don't use a valve anymore the use a restriction in the valve cover or in the hose to the vacuum source that can clog and not allow ventilation in the crankcase witch can cause excessive oil use either leaks or burning.
Yo Scotty, love your work, can you teach me how to work on cars and know em like you do
I change mine every year. But haven’t done it for about 3 years now! I better order one now…
A shop didn't reinstall mine correctly after doing valve cover gaskets on my Ranger. I didn't notice until I saw frothy stuff on my filler cap. Head gaskets were good, while testing I found the PCV valve out of the valve cover. Reinstalled it, problem solved.
Thanks Dennis Hopper for that PCV valve info
When I first saw Scotty, I thought that he resembled Dennis Hopper, too.
I guess my 367,000 mile nissan doesn't need a motor after all. Very rare for a pcv valve to go. I guess my smoke show isn't from the tires which I keep telling people
My pcv valve was like 100.00 on a 2008 mustang , but it repaired the oil leak on the ground
Big question. Is this correct? I always thought it was better to let your engine warm up before driving it but AAA says no..Driving the car normally and avoiding hard acceleration brings the engine to a warmer temperature faster, and also reduces wear and exhaust emissions," said Cliff Ruud, Managing Director of Automotive for AAA. "Naturally, a little longer idle time is okay in the winter while you clear snow and ice from the windshield and other car parts."
Mechanics don't want you to buy a 94' Celica because they never breakdown and they don't get to work on one.
Did Scotty ever come out with that car fixing app?
No, he gave up on it I think.
Right he had everyone subscribe with their emails and nothing haha probably too complicated
Good advice from a wise man. Thank you sir.
When rings are worn its the pcv valve. Never rings or oil leaks. Always a 10.00 part
I just put a new PCV in my car last month. Good Advice 👍🚗
Nice reminder, thanks.
It was $400 on my 2005 honda odyssey.
