- The Pokémon TCG’s Expanded format has had a varied reputation from facilitating exciting and unique interactions to downright degeneracy. Occasionally, the Pokémon Company was forced to step in and ban cards to prevent overpowered or game-breaking decks from flooding the competitive environment. This is the fifth and final installment in our series covering the history of every banned card in the Expanded format. Today we’ll be exploring the history of the mascots from Expanded’s most powerful control decks and closing out with the most powerful consistency card in the modern era of the game.

Shaymin-EX was the card that made me understand why hard once per turns need to exist. Really wish Pokemon would use them more!
Heck, I used 4 Shaymin EX in my Zoroark GX deck before it got banned. And 4 in my Night March deck. And 4 in Lost March
Turns out, before it got banned, Shaymin was arguably the best draw card in the game because of the lack of that hard 1PT clause lol

I’d love to see you do a video talking about the “Hall of Fame” format. It’s a really interesting format exclusive to the Japanese TCG that uses cards from the Diamond and Pearl expansion onward, and uses a unique banlist that limits cards in a way similar to Yugioh Duel Links, where restricted cards are given a point value, and a deck cannot exceed a certain number of points.
Masquerain misread as "Masquerina." Someone's got yugioh on the brain.
I remember when Shaymin-EX was underestimated, and considered a bad card, and then how it broke the game instantly afterwards, becoming a 100$ card.

I remember pre buying 14 of skymin cause I thought it was gonna be nuts. One of the pokemon cards that I actually made a decent return out.
@@maskedfallen1331 I remmember there was a guy that did that same thing but with sesimitoad ex. Except instead of 14 he got his hands on over 60 copies of the card. That's what I heard from the players anyways.
I could very well be wrong, but I played the game during roaring skies and I'm 99.99% sure that everybody that actually played the game realized how insane shaymin EX was immediately. I'm hardly a tournament player, nor are my friends, but we all KNEW shaymin was gonna be silly good lol.
I do think it went from a $30 card to a $60 (regular) or $95 (full art) though. So apparently the player base didn't realize it was a staple 4 of in every deck. I respectfully concede that point

There’s actually one banned card left: Blaine’s Quiz Show. This one isn’t that interesting though, since the reason was explicitly given: It has an effect that is language dependent and thus unsuited for multi-lingual events.

Those last notes about Shaymin Ex reminds me of those Sabledonk and Uxiedonk decks that were around right before black and white and compleately changed the ruleset for the new format
Very glad I found this channel, this series has demonstrated how cards can be chained together to accomplish specific goals efficiently, or in this case, overwhelmingly so. I would love to see more videos of this type, perhaps focusing on archetypes and what made them successful?
I first played competitively during BW era, and I knew Sableye was good, but JEESUS
very good write up on sableye. wasnt expecting it to go into such detail. the history of the card is probably the most intresting in the expanded format as it always seemed to be on the brink of being broken but never quite made it
I haven't played in a very, very long time. I fell out of the game in the mid '00s when Yu-Gi-Oh displaced Pokemon League so I couldn't find anyone to play with.
The game has changed so much since then that I barely recognize it anymore. On the one hand, the power creep is unbelievable -- Pokemon that would have been massively overpowered back then are being released as uncommons now. Lots of rules have changed, and I don't even know all of them (I didn't know about the first turn attack change until this very video). But on the other hand, cards that I considered staples are somehow now considered too powerful to ever reproduce.
I really don't know how to feel about it.
I surprised nobody played Looker with Oranguru (or at least it isn't mentioned here). It lets you draw three... FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DECK!
people did, but it was either noob bait or used as 1 offs, you are sacrificing your supporter for turn after all, and if you want to loop this strat over and over you need a way to add looker back, so you end up using your supporter for turn to get 2 cards from the discard... which sableye did without using your supporter
Yeah it's ultimately just a lot weaker than sableye + time puzzle.
Essentially you absolutely need vs seeker to be one of the 3 cards returned with Oranguru simply because you actually need to loop looker. This means Oranguru will always return any 2 cards + vs seeker, and since you'll always use vs seeker right away it will only return you any 2 cards in the end.
Which is exactly the same thing that sableye + time puzzle does, just with the difference that you can't play supporter cards.
The only way for Oranguru to be better than Sableye + Time Puzzle is by decking yourself out and having two mons with a poképower that lets you draw a card. That way you will always draw 3 cards a turn, and you can choose these 3 cards from your discard pile.
Looker also has it's own whistle to search it out so it's not the worst idea even if it's a far cry from puzzle of time

I remember playing virizion/genesect against toad/puff and losing hard becuase I never could keep an energy in play. One of the moments I questioned if the game was even fun at all.
I can tell he only plays the card game with pronunciations like “Lashios”, “Girafaridge”, and “Masquerina” 😂

Sableye sure had a lot of powerful cards that it could recycle. It would be very broken in a Lost Box deck alongside it Psychic variant. If the black one was allowed along side the purple, it could recycle Scoop-Up Nets or even Colress's Experiment for long combos.

This is a very interesting video but the rainbow background effect is a bitrate killer, too many colors changing at once kills video compression, it’s probably an effect to avoid using.
Also the way you pronounced Latios hurt my soul
I use a rare varient of doll stall that uses florges. Once set up, the game turns into easy mode. And its very easy to set up within the first 2 turns, and it's fun to turn ADP into a free match.
The reason not many know about this deck though is because it uses an extremely expensive card called Tropical Beach. So, I don't see it being banned anytime soon.
My guy has the worst pronunciation of Pokemon names and attacks, but I do like to hear about Expanded so I watch anyways lol.
It's a recurring theme with him. He pronounces Yu-Gi-Oh cards wrong all the time, too

I really do wish Shaymin-EX was banned sooner. The card caused so much collateral damage from cards that could've stayed legal for far longer if only this card was not pushing them to their breaking point.

a few minors mistakes such as poke-body instead of poke power, darkrai one hit koing exs instead of 2 hit koing, team skull grunt discarding only special energies instead of any energy. but it was a good series
I followed this series for a week or so now, it is so satisfying to see the ultimate villain in Shaymin-EX finally getting banned

Shaymin EX: So busted it spawned hard once per turns and the rule box mechanic. And thank Arceus Set up Uxie isn't legal in Expanded (DP era card, imagine Shaymin EX but no rule box, so hello Life dew, and it draws to 7)
I don't see the correlation though, those 3 things were introduced in different decades.
The HOPT condition for Abilities (at the time Poké-Powers) was introduced in 2004.
Shaymin-EX itself was released in 2015.
The Rule Box keyword was introduced in 2021.

@@kwayke9 EX Hidden Legends introduced the condition (it could be earlier, but this is afaik). In that set, it shows up on Bellossom, Lanturn and the 4 Castform forms. The most famous Pokémon with a HOPT Poké Power is probably Pidgeot RG 10 with Quick Search. It has a generic search for 1 card effect.
edit: tbh I get what you mean by Rule Box, it may have been at least partially due to Shaymin-EX or in consideration of Expanded in general. Though they didn't introduce it to "fix" Scoop Up Net or Shaymin-EX, they kinda just left it banned.
Side note, but I think double dragon or giratina and garchomp ttgx will be banned soon because of lugia.
Using wally to evolve lugia, then placing two archeops on the bench which could accelerate all the needed energy for tinachomp gx move at max power makes for a super consistent donk deck.
Wally deserve the ban .
That combo can be done faster without the Lugia VSTAR trick or Wally.
Still, the combo is evil; I'd argue DDE is the card to ban as it's the enabler right now.

Shaymin EX was a mistake, straight up it was a mistake
I’ll note, the biggest issue with the recovery is it getting back more than one card, just allowing you to reuse and snowball momentum. Cards like Munchlax don’t see the same play for that reason
Now Shaymin-EX, haha, I miss Shaymin. And I sincerely dislike it being banned, as for it is a liability, but I wish there were limitations applied. If we banned Scoop Up Net, it would be much less a problem, albeit maybe ban Dialga VStar if we do unban shaymin. Worst case I’d at least prefer a limited list for things like Shaymin, Lusamine, ICA and so on. But oh well
Latios [la-tee-OSE] EX also wasn’t so much a problem on ladder when Pheramosa existed, but yeah they both sucked to be against

I love your content but please try to Google a pronunciation of important words like card names. I'm not trying to throw shade, it's just jarring to be immersed in the history of the game only for a name to be so wrong it sounds like the narrator has never played Pokémon before.
