THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH
ABOUT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
CAROL SWAIN
When you think about racial equality and civil rights, which political party comes to mind? The
Republicans? Or, the Democrats? Most people would probably say the Democrats. But this
answer is incorrect.
Since its founding in 1829, the Democratic Party has fought against every major civil rights
initiative, and has a long history of discrimination.
The Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed Reconstruction,
founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, perpetrated lynchings, and fought against
the civil rights acts of the 1950s and 1960s.
In contrast, the Republican Party was founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. Its mission
was to stop the spread of slavery into the new western territories with the aim of abolishing it
entirely. This effort, however, was dealt a major blow by the Supreme Court. In the 1857 case
Dred Scott v. Sandford, the court ruled that slaves aren’t citizens; they’re property. The seven
justices who voted in favor of slavery? All Democrats. The two justices who dissented? Both
Republicans.
The slavery question was, of course, ultimately resolved by a bloody civil war. The commander-
in-chief during that war was the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln - the man who
freed the slaves.
Six days after the Confederate army surrendered, John Wilkes Booth, a Democrat, assassinated
President Lincoln. Lincoln’s vice president, a Democrat named Andrew Johnson, assumed
the presidency. But Johnson adamantly opposed Lincoln’s plan to integrate the newly freed
slaves into the South’s economic and social order.
Johnson and the Democratic Party were unified in their opposition to the 13th Amendment,
which abolished slavery; the 14th Amendment, which gave blacks citizenship; and the
15th Amendment, which gave blacks the vote. All three passed only because of universal
Republican support.
During the era of Reconstruction, federal troops stationed in the south helped secure rights for
the newly freed slaves. Hundreds of black men were elected to southern state legislatures as
Republicans, and 22 black Republicans served in the US Congress by 1900. The Democrats
did not elect a black man to Congress until 1935.
But after Reconstruction ended, when the federal troops went home, Democrats roared back
Free Courses for Free Minds
.com
into power in the South. They quickly reestablished white supremacy across the region with
measures like black codes - laws that restricted the ability of blacks to own property and run
businesses. And they imposed poll taxes and literacy tests, used to subvert the black citizen’s
right to vote.
And how was all of this enforced? By terror -- much of it instigated by the Ku Klux Klan,
founded by a Democrat, Nathan Bedford Forrest.
As historian Eric Foner - himself a Democrat - notes:
“In effect, the Klan was a military force serving the interests of the Democratic Party.”
President Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat, shared many views with the Klan. He re-segregated
many federal agencies, and even screened the first movie ever played at the White House -
the racist film “The Birth of a Nation,” originally entitled “The Clansman.”
A few decades later, the only serious congressional opposition to the landmark Civil Rights Act
of 1964 came from Democrats.
Eighty percent of Republicans in Congress supported the bill. Less than 70 percent of
Democrats did. Democratic senators filibustered the bill for 75 days, until Republicans
mustered the few extra votes needed to break the logjam.
And when all of their efforts to enslave blacks, keep them enslaved, and then keep them from
voting had failed, the Democrats came up with a new strategy: If black people are going to
vote, they might as well vote for Democrats. As President Lyndon Johnson was purported to
have said about the Civil Rights Act, “I’ll have them n*****s voting Democrat for two hundred
years.”
So now, the Democratic Party prospers on the votes of the very people it has spent much of
its history oppressing.
Democrats falsely claim that the Republican Party is the villain, when in reality it’s the failed
policies of the Democratic Party that have kept blacks down. Massive government welfare
has decimated the black family. Opposition to school choice has kept them trapped in failing
schools. Politically correct policing has left black neighborhoods defenseless against violent
crime.
So, when you think about racial equality and civil rights, which political party should come to
mind?
I’m Carol Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University, for Prager
University.
That's wokism for you.

I agree with Vivek 100%, I grew up in the late 70's, early 80's and none of my peers were racist. We never cared what race someone was, we only cared about character not skin color.
Exactly
It’s the same here and I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. We all know what the Democrats are doing. Because I remember how elections used to be pretty docile and the only difference between the parties were mainly just debates on economics and foreign policy.
The Democrats I think didn’t like being on a level playing field and their economic policies clearly being subpar so they went full force into convincing everyone that there needs to be a new civil rights movement and that they’ll save ppl from the boogeyman essentially.
Which sadly has basically worked for years now. However hopefully the masses are realizing this now.

Same here. I been mentally and physically tortured by blacks and Mexicans growing up in California. But I forgive them all. It’s not race, they were just from tough neighborhoods. That is why I am now a matured conservative.
Because a lot of us they refer to as white have mixed heritage. I have 5 Native American tribes , 2 German great grandfathers and one Irish great grandfather in my ancestry. "We are the closest we ever have been..."
That's true. But the destination is still on another planet.
There's a ton of systemic racism. Just look at the court systems. Look at the jails. Look at the over-policing of minority communities. Look at city planning, which almost invariably builds undesirable facilities in those minority communities. Look at how we fund our school and public works, which ensures that only wealthy communities have good services. Look at Flint, Michigan as an example.
It's VERY convenient for those who are not affected by systemic racism to say "I don't SEE or FEEL or PERPETRATE any racism myself, so the problem must be solved!" American was BUILT on racism; it was FOUNDED by racists. The civil rights movement won its INITIAL victories less than 100 years ago. There has been almost no active effort to undo the harms of slavery, segregation, or racism.
To say that we are closer than ever to solving America's long-running, deep-seated problems of racism is like saying that we are closer than ever to traveling at the speed of light.

But after Reconstruction ended, when the federal troops went home, Democrats roared back

into power in the South.
Democrats falsely claim that the Republican Party is the villain,
Hope Trump picks him as VP

Vivek is definitely a should be selected as Vice president. He speaks better, highly successful immigrant billionaire businessman, thinks outside the box, most of all, not a traditional politician.

He is criticized that he says racism isn't a problem.... and then he talks about how close we are to perfection. To say things are almost perfect is to deny that there are problems. It's simple really.

@@Thor.Jorgensenhow do we fix it?

I can’t find a single thing that I disagree with what he says. Plus how he says it and explains it so deeply is just unlike any presidential candidate I’ve ever seen
I can find several things, but I know the history and know more about MLK than a few quotes from the I have a dream speech.
He's gaslighting people because even when I approach his statements with the best faith I can. At the end shows actually his point. To ignore racism to stop racism. It's a concept that conservatives only apply to racism.
If you apply the same logic to abortion. The second amendment or any other point conservatives find important. None of them would agree with me making the same argument but using abortion or government spending.
I personally don’t get his point, just because things are much better then in the 50s and 60s doesn’t mean there’s not more too be done. What if some politicians said that at least slavery is illegal, and we are the closest to racial equality as ever, so advocating for more rights would be offensive to Frederick Douglass, or William Loyd Garrison. That would be a ridiculous statement, and I don’t get why you could think his statement is not ridiculous.
As he said, we are very close, as close as we have ever been. If you look between the 90 until around the time Obama became president. Nobody was even saying the word racism. That’s because we are equal. Yes some people are still racist and some people will be that way. However there isn’t a single right a white person has that a black person doesn’t. There is no reason to call someone racist if they choose a white oerson over a black person. If you start choosing people for jobs or anything based off of their color, isn’t that just becoming more racist? I’m trying to apply for scholarships but 98% of them I can’t apply for just because I’m a straight white male. If we would stop focusing on race and just focus on what we are doing then this world would becomes productive and there would be little to no racism, but people focus on race in every situation which holds back progress and makes people so divided and thinking everyone is racist for no reason.
Republicans, listen to me, I might have voted for this guy. But never Trump. Respectfully just another Independent.
When Martin Luther King Jr Said
We’ve got some difficult days ahead,” Martin Luther King, Jr., told an overflowing crowd in Memphis, Tennessee, on 3 April 1968, where the city’s sanitation workers were striking. “But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land” (King, “I’ve Been,” 222-223). Less than 24 hours after these prophetic words, King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. Promised Land are Heaven

I am amazed by Vivek, he is extremely intelligent and he articulates his point so well. The interviewers just fan the flames of racism, I totally agree with Vivek I believe people have come along way and MLK truly was the reason why that happened.
ABSOLUTELY THEY love TO keep us at each OTHERS throats they love to stir the pot. too bad we won't let them ANYMORE
“Buffer” groups of people who are in the middle of the racial extremes (ie Black and White) have often served the agenda of the dominant (or better yet, domineering) group in society. They (ie the “buffers”) commonly and frequently sway their opinions between the extremes depending on what will serve them best… so I’m not surprised by this guy’s stance… I mean his people actually created racism and still define segments of their population as “untouchables”…
Why must we all pretend there is no systemic racism when there evidently is? Yes things might be much better than they were during slavery or Jim Crow or whatever, but why should those still experiencing adversity from systematic issues pretend that all is well and dandy, just coz it is better than it used to be…
We acknowledge the amount of racism I experience compared to my predecessors is significantly less detrimental to my life but we cannot stop reaching for the goal to stamp out racism fully despite it being significantly less than in the past.
