How come they're fraternal twins when I can't tell them apart? I've always thought they were identical twins.
They were two separate eggs, instead of one egg, the original egg split into two; thus fraternal twins.

@danielle 🌈 Those are all the reasons they cite for why they "can't" be identical twins, but not one of those things, nor even all of them together, prove anything. Identical twins are often different heights and have slight differences in appearance. The expression of DNA and which genes get turned on or off is not absolute. Even in the womb, they had different experiences that may have slightly changed how some of their features developed, like one having thinner lips or slightly differently shaped ears. Sufficed it to say that if twins are so much alike that they can play the same character even once they're not babies anymore, they're identical.. This is very complicated science, I know, but the information is out there on the web for anyone who is interested.

It is true that Mary-Kate and Ashley, and their parents, have said that the girls are fraternal twins (i.e. not identical). However, they’ve also said that this information is based on what a doctor told their parents when they were born, and that they have not had any formal genetic testing. In other words, no one, including Mary-Kate and Ashley themselves, know for sure if they’re identical or not. Apparently they were in separate amnioic sacs in the womb, and at the time of their birth, it was still believed that only fraternal twins had separate sacs. However, now we know that that is not true. Fraternal twins ARE always in separate sacs, but identical twins can have either one or two sacs depending on how soon after conception the embryo splits. Appearance-wise, Mary-Kate and Ashley are very similar. They are not identical in appearance, but they are similar enough that they COULD be identical. The term ”identical twins” is misleading since it’s technically not about an identical appearance but about an identical set of genes (identical twins share approx. 100 % of their genes). Therefore it is possible for even identical twins to look different, especially as they grow up. Some identical twins are very hard to tell apart and with others it’s surprisingly easy. Fraternal twins share approx. 50 % of their genes, just like regular siblings. Some fraternal twins still look a lot alike, while others look completely different. With Mary-Kate and Ashley, their younger sister Elizabeth Olsen also looks a lot like them, which suggests that their family has ”strong genes”. That could explain why Mary-Kate and Ashley look so much alike even if they are ”only” fraternal”. But we can’t know for sure unless they get tested.
The fact that Mary-Kate is left-handed and Ashley is right-handed, and the fact that they are of slightly different heights, is not proof of their being fraternal, since these characteristics can occur in both fraternal and identical twins.
There is also a third, and less known kind of twins, called ”semi identical twins”. These share approx. 75 % of their genes and occur when an unfertilized egg spontaneously splits in two and each half is fertilized by different sperm. (Regular identical twins occur when an egg is fertilized by one sperm, creating an embryo which then splits in two, and fraternal twins occur when two separate eggs are each fertilized by different sperm).
But again, the only way to know for sure would be to get genetic testing.

@@Yyyaaayyyaaaaa i would've fell out of my chair if Ashley went to my school, because im a year older, so trust me everyone knew who the Olsen Twins were, and i had a massive crush on Ashley. everyone would try to get pictures of her, because if Ashley was there Mary-Kate would've been there to. but the truth is they didn't go to any public school, they went to some private school, most likely a school for other child celebrities.
I think it's nice that they got to experience this, not that it was perfect probably. But it also makes you wonder about the parents. Sometimes, I look at parents who's children are "child stars" and perhaps amass a large fortune at a young age, and can't help to think about how they possible might be "forcing" their kids to do this, for their (the parent's) gain, especially when such people (kids) start out at such a young age and don't really know much about money, wealth or people taking advantage of them for their own financial benefit.

@Loulou Bos Well then act like it in your comment. DNA testing is not necessary. You can tell what the babies are when they are born.
Fraternal twins have their own separate placenta and umbilical cord as they come from two separate eggs, while identical twins have separate umbilical cords sharing the same placenta. Identical split from one egg is why they share one placenta. This is clear evidence at birth without any testing needed.
@Loulou Bos I'm a Fraternal twin myself and I agree with you. Plus, if the olsen twins said in interviews for years that they are fraternal twins then they are Fraternal twins. They wouldnt lie about it. Plus, they do not look like identical twins at all. Their faces are different. Fraternal twins can look identaical or similar when they were yonger but the differences has peak for them at 10 or 11 years old.
@@MG-mj6zi there are identical twins who have separate placentas and separate amniotic sacs. It's all about when the embryo splits. They're called dichorionic/diamniotic twins and they are identical about 30% of the time.
