Some of Metallica's hardest songs on rhythm guitar, here's my take on them :)

It was pretty tough to choose the songs and riffs for this video, hopefully I didn't miss any obvious ones. :p These Metallica songs were insanely hard and it took me some time to learn them, any feedback is appreciated and the support I have gotten from you has been amazing and it really motivates me to make more!
Let me know what kind of videos you would like to see from me or if you have any specific bands you'd like me to make video of! - Hudba
James does not only sing at the same time but even occassionally yells "Yeah" in the very right moments.
"Yeah!" is very important :)
And mostly hammered for 20 years.
"occasionally" hahah ok
“Yeah-eah!!!”
The "Yeahs" was actually written in the songs! They had to be edited out due to copyright claims! 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, James Brown actually owns those rights! 😬 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jk aside, James Hetfield is very talented and I respect him as a fellow musician, I think Metallica is a awesome band and I rarely listen to anything else except The Big 4!
right hand hard Level = 80%
Left hand hard Level = 05%
Hah exactly \,,/
But what if you're lefthanded
ur math is blowing my mind
Simos Simos the more and more I learn Metallica songs and Megadeth songs the more I realize how true this is. Megadeth is more the opposite of that. Both are fun to play though
Not in all cases. Master of puppets always was and still is a "tongue twister" for me to play in the left hand, the speed only make it harder
“I want to be a rhythm guitarist because it’s easier”
edit: No one notices the quotation marks. It's called sarcasm guys.
Put 'them to listen Set the world afire of Megadeth.
stargazer _099 are you like 5 years old? Lol
Cameron Reyno nobody got the joke you were making. Lol.
You obviously dont play then.
So of yall saying acoustic stuff, but we're talking about Metal Rythm guitar
People don't understand how talented James is to be able to play these extremely difficult riffs and sing at the same time
Dave mustaine: pff ;)
jk I love them both
Not to start beef but this is nothing compared to Dave Mustaine ;)
@@sambenjamin9636 dude I was thinking the SAME EXACT THING. Watching the Megadeth video this Kat did was good. After watching all these other ones, I swear NO ONE IS EVEN CLOSE to Dave Mustaine. It's ridiculous how he makes all these guys look like chumps. And then to see all these comments. Like uhmmm watch the Megadeth one then see what's really real ahaha
@@RA-gy1ft well i guess if you want to compare them then you should watch them and not this guy trying to keep up with them🤘
But Hetfield is actually singing while he is playing.
Put on 1.25x speed for Seattle 89’
Is it actualy legit?
@@someone.2070 hell no. Listen to battery at that speed.
@@JungleJuiceJoey canada 86 probs is that speed though
Whiplash Seattle 89. Damn, that was fast.
@@someone.2070 I think the battery from Seattle '89 is faster than the studio version.
and to think hetfield does this for a few hours nearly every night, the man is a damn robot
or he just isnt a lame guitarist man playing these riffs correctly doesnt need more than 2 years of chilled guitar playing
It's called muscle memory. Ofc the fact that he's a professional musician with decades of experience doesnt hurt either.
Interestingly: James wasn't a guitarist when they formed Metallica. Dave Mustaine was the only guitarist in the band in the beginning.
thats bullshit
he was a guitarist way before metallica
Zielix20 he not right but also not wrong, in the beginning Metallica experimented with different guitar and vocal positions including a guitarist from Armoured saint (who later went to anthrax) to be in the band with mustaine etc , but james always played guitar as that’s why he answered Lars’ advert !
Kirk would have a rough time trying to play these...
It's the notes in between that are fucking with him
I understood that reference
A man of culture here
Hahahah
“No no I got that part-“
Well some of these riffs were invented by him
James Hettfeild's downpickig is faster than your alternate picking
I think he can play faster
James was fucking playing Creeping Death in Tokyo 1986 at 280bpm
Facts
@@randy0210 Tokyo or Nagoya?
@@randy0210 he uses alternate picking at that song. Lol its impossible at 280bpm to downpick.
James Hetfield is actually a crazy good guitarist. Playing these riffs accurately for a long time (like a show) and singing at the same time is extremely difficult
Now sing while simultaneously playing the riffs :) like Hetfield.
James Hetfield is a god.
Christian Mads Olesen he just sing on the 00000000 part of the riff
Guitarists Suck the man sings battery and plays it at the same time
Veljko Selver b0tt0ry
And remember, Hetfield's vocals have to be downpicked as well.
Guitarists Suck "hater crying". Keep crying.
I think one thing Hetfield doesn't get enough credit for is how audible he makes every note. The speed is neck breaking and he has to sing on top of it. Mad respect for Papa Het.
Trying to play Disposable Heroes gave me tendonitis, no joking
you gotta build it up over time, I found JH’s technique helped me do it easier since it’s not as much movement as index-thumb technique
I got tendonitis from playing bass with my index and ring finger for too long lol
@@extremelycreativeusername3190 why ring finger?

Tip for learning most fast riffs: increase speed by .25 and try to keep up. Then go back to normal speed and it feels slower
For the speed playing faster is good practice but for accuracy you should start slower ;) Using both works wonderfully for me (y)
Watch metallica hammerfest
Or learn megadeth then go back to metallica that also works
@@redrocket9861 probably would help with the left hand, but not the right
Different genre but that's how I learned Don't Fear the Reaper, was playing it double time and then slowing it back down again.
Papa Het, the right hand of Metal.
Honestly, he is Metal's right hand man.
The left hand of GREAT MUSIC
@ognilouD driB they complete each other, kill em all album prove this

Blackened... That's a hella nightmare riff to play... So gotdamn hard
Never had a problem with Blackened. Dyers Eve was a bitch....
its confusing, in TAB you can read it, but its harder to actually understand
It’s too slow in this video too
Yes, it's definitely the hardest, only chorus is rather simple, all orher riffs from blackened are tough. In video it's slow and simplified. With muted/unmuted powerchords, continuous tempo changes and jumps it's really a nightmare.
I don't get why people think blackened is hard cuz i learned it. Easily in about a week. Maybe im just playing it wrong?
James wrote the riffs so I think it's in his natural ability to play them and sing, but being able to still play them 30+ years later and sing is God mode. Papa Hetfield is definitely a legend of a front man 🤘
Mustaine may have wrote some of those. He's easily equally as impressive in what he plays and sings
My carpal tunnel burns just after watching.
Haha I bet :D
Omar Biagi try ha being arthritis.
Carpal is nothing ..
Try playing with a pinched nerve ..
In your neck vertebrae ..
It affects your entire right arm .. (in my case)
Good thing it is not both arms!
Ilovemusicnbabes finally a person to relate with, I’ve had arthritis since I was born
I've changed my diet drastically, super lean eating, no processed foods, red meats, etc, helped my carpal tunnel a ton
fight fire with fire difficulty: 99% right hand 1% left hand
fight fire with fire is a fkn marathon took me like a month of practicing that just to get the speed right
Ya, left hand doesn't really do much lol. Right hand just dies
Its so hard he played Blackened slightly slower tempo.
Hah my bad, never trust tabs for tempos 😅 you might enjoy Havok hardest songs, it has similar riff (Afterburner) at 230bpm
Ummmm .... How is "Damage, Inc" not here ????
You can see it in my "Metallica Medley 2018" :)
It really isn't that hard to play
ajfa that one bit near the middle/end though 007708....
That presolo- bridge riff is an all time great
@@jakkla3036 It's harder than Disposable Heroes imo. My fingers don't reach the frets very well for the main intro Damage Inc riff
Disposable heroes is ok if you like downpicking but you do that riff for a long time is the true endurance test.
That's true, I had to do some serious warm-ups to get that one
Calvin Giang Sygard I can only play the first minute before I give up, it's a real fucker on the picking hand.
Down picking and tremolo masters !!!
I played it entirely rythmically once or twice, and I've been playimg for about 3 years. (Not really played that one much lately tho) but it truly is a pain in the ass
Only riff in that one that is down picked is the opening riff. The bridge is also down picked, but is not very fast.
Is Blackened a bit slowed down, or am i stupid?
Drago I think its abit slower, my bad :/ I just checked the tempo from some tabs and apparently you cant even trust tabs even for just the tempo 😅
Karri Hanninen i mean, i understand you. I could never pull that off, but you did. That riff is hard, even at a slower tempo. You're great.
Thanks for the support man \,,/
Yes it is!
For sure it is!
Pretty sure the Dyers Eve riff is just 2’s for the main part, rather than 23232323

@@jesselee2549 The climax man! The "deedelee" part like halfway thru the song after all those stacking overdubs. Blows my lid every time its so tight.

EDIT: I've just setup my Patreon page and when I reach 20$ in a month, I will start working on Every PANTERA song in 1 video :)
I recently uploaded a video with a few bands that are not known well but that sound great.
If you do Raptor, from Paradox, you got me.
But "kind of videos" I really love metal covers of popular songs, they are super fun to listen ha
Thanks for the suggestion! I had an idea that I could do a video of something like "10 great unknown metal bands" and include Paradox in that. :o Right now I'm trying to focus on videos that might get more views, and if I get more following I would happily start to promote more unknown bands with regular cover videos :)
Yes, its understandable. Your "can you name these songs" had a lot of success! Maybe you could try that again!
Anyway, whatever your choice is, keep it rocking, man!
Karri Hanninen have you tab for blackened ? I would be grateful ...savage playing btw!
stevedgolfer I can make the tabs for the Blackened parts I played in this video, send me a message via my FB page and I will send them later today there :)
Also:
Through The Never
Damage Inc
Sanitarium (middle section)
Creeping Death
The Struggle Within
Eye Of The Beholder
I wouldn't say that Creeping Death is one of their hardest rhythms. It was actually the third Metallica song I ever learned. Getting it up to proper speed was a little tough, but didn't take too long at all.
I can finally play Through the Never. Only took 15 years lol.
eye of the beholder is really easy to play
Shortest straw is a pain in the ass, the random notes they threw in there is quite odd to play without a good drummer
Iman Isali all downpicking though
Fight Fire With Fire will forever be one of the heaviest, most disgusting riffs out there.
Fucking brutal, I love it
I loved playing playing that song in guitar hero metallica on expert, now that I play guitar and the fretting feels similar
not only the hardest, but possibly the most awesome songs from MetallicA...
cheers!
0:25 respect
Master of Puppets was my first hard song I learned. I remember getting up and going to my parents to show them how I learned the intro and verse (which I then learned later that I didn’t learn the verse part 100% right). It was so satisfying to learn.
Now I think of that song as a downpicking warmup. 😆
I’ve learned the first part, can play the part after but really slowly, and i can play the part that starts when James says “come crawling faster” pretty well
@@JeremyHale141just play alot of downpicking riffs to increase your speed. Its like working out the more you down pick the faster youll be able to down pick and the more accurate. Its definitely way better to go learn a bunch of different songs than to spend all your time learning one
Awesome man, great mix of their best!
This is exactly why Kirk isn't allowed to play rhythm tracks in the studio!
Tim Murphy why?
@@xxFABRI56xx Because he is most likely unable to duplicate these riffs to perfection.
Tim Murphy Kirk wrote middle riff of Master of Puppets, the other middle section of battery, the other middle section of Disposable heroes
Kirk is hell of a riff writer
@Tushar Sharma bro,you need to chill
well done, the riffs sound very tight. Who cares that blackened and maybe others are a bit slower than original - i'd rather have a tight played riff a bit slower, than a sloppy played riff a bit faster
Thanks for the comment man!
And that was tight as hell!
Thanks! :)
blackened is a damn hard down picking riff.
Its not too bad after isolating it and practicing - you'll get it, I'm sure.
Certain songs from Death Magnetic can be a pain in the ass as well such as My Apocalypse
I can't remember that song but I think I once learned All nightmare long, it had some cool timing in the riffs (y)
What about that was just your life?
All nightmare long is a bitch to play if you haven't warmed up first.
it took me a very long time to master that riff holy fuck it's a hard riff
Would love to hear some St. Anger riffs. Its had quite a few riffs on that album
This is some amazingly clean playing and a great tone, good work!
Great video, man. I remember having a bad time back in the day, when I was trying to play disposable heroes. That fast part during "soldier boy, made of clay" is harder than it seems
It's 2-2-2-2.
I've gotten so many comments about that, lets say I'm more educated now about the riff than what I was before making this video (y) :)
Nice! Great video though.
Thanks \../
Except it's not. You can listen to a slowed down version and it is clearly the way he plays it here.
2-3-2-3 in the studio
2-2-2-2 simplified for live
Nice job, there really are the hardest ones! Keep it up!
Awesome killer riffs, bro!
Excellent job. Very clean.
I’ve wanted to learn guitar for 25 years now, might start when I’m 70
Do it now 🤘💪
Absolutely start now. I didn't pick up a guitar until i was 45. Then i set it down for a couple of years. Then picked it up again..repeat. But the last 3 years i try to play as often as i can, and it's paid off. When you nail a part you've been trying to do..man what a feeling! Do it. You won't regret it.
The fact that most of these are off of MoP give you a sense of just how groundbreaking it was and where the band was not only musically but also technically.
Hey man. I appreciate the difficulty of this, and you killed it man! Good job!
Awesome shit dude!!
So damn good
Thanks!
Ayyyyeee DJ delz
your playing is on point, a joy to watch
Thanks!
Love your guitar man!!
Very clean well done!
Nicely done!
Thanks!
Its mainly the picking thats most difficult
Yeah thats true, they really strain the picking hand. Also the rhythms are more complicated than they sound like, at least I thought so when recording :D
Megadeth also has some hard rhythm riffs. Maybe do a Megadeth video next?
Megadeth actually is harder, specially Rust in Peace. That shit is hard, dude.
Megadeth solos are way more complicated but rhythm is about the same.
m0skit0zindahouse and i cant imagine dave playing those crazy rhythm like holy war, lucretia, poison was the cure, etc while singing..
Nice one! Saw the other videos too, you rock man. Plus, I just fell in love with your Ibanez!
Wow! That was absolutely awesome. Metallica from the 1980s is my favorite of all time!! Thanks for making that video
Metallica isn't metallica without james hetfield!
Ayan Akash actually Metallica wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Lars Ulrich 🤘🏼
Ayan Akash or jason
Metallica is James Hetfield
SauDude lol you obviously don’t know what Lars contributes 😂 James is basically the riff guy. Kirk the solo guy. Rob is there. And Lars is the conductor, he makes the arrangements for the songs, he even comes up with little riffs, for example the ride the lightning intro, and yeah I’m sure a 12 years old will be as proficient as a machine 😂

Disposable Heroes is like training for a race or something. Every time I play it I get a little further in the song but I still can’t make it all the way through without taking a break 💀
The crunchy joy guitar tone for this is pleasing to me

Battery and some other songs have really weird accents and are not quite 4/4. I yet have problem to nail Battery like that.
I have to show this video to every one-year-playing wannabee guitarist who proclaims Metallicas Songs are easy- like Master.
In comments I say to those: how and how fast are you playing it ? Are you downpicking or alternating ?
Metallica is playing these songs so fast with downpicking only, that I am struggling to play along... and Hetfield is singing too.
Yeah I totally agree that lot of Metallica songs have these little details that makes them lot harder to play than they first sound like, and many songs are really easy to play "sort of right" but once you dig in and find how they actually play them, it gets really tough.
Thanks for the comment man \../
Battery is still my bane. I can play Disposable and Damage Inc without breaking a sweat but Battery's brief 5/4 always trip me up.
Andyw1228 I think most bands have those little accents that if you don't hear them you can be fooled into thinking they are easy to play. Metallica riffs are muscular but maybe not as complicated as others but I wouldn't say they're simple to play.
I'm pretty sure Hetfield is not human, he plays fast still to this day without missing a beat and he's in his godamn 60s
Most of the time their live shows are faster than the album version. Especially during the early years
I think more than the downpicking it’s those fast licks in between the riffs that gets us all.
Super cool. Great job.
You did it so well, although a slight missing note on the disposable heroes riff, fucking awesome! Well done.
I swear I could hear bass when you play “justice songs”
@Logan Wilder trust me it wasn't an accident it was deliberate. Either the enginner boosted the bass slightly as a form of rebellion or jason was recording a little bit louder than normal. (They went from a fingerstyle player to a pick player so it's gonna be louder)
Lmao
Great vid
Thanks!
Sounds good man👍🏻
The fluidity, ease, and accuracy with which you play is stellar! That earns an easy SUBSCRIBBLE!
Disposable heroes rhythm breaks my brain. I have tried so many times to learn it.
Something about it just doesn't compute I can't hold it in thought. *I literally can't*. It's weird. One of my fav songs though!
letterpool Same but for Orion, not the first riff, but the variation or 3rd riff. Never got that down lol
Every time I play it or hear it I secretly role my tongue every time the triplets hit
I WAS BORN FOR DYIIIIIIIIIIIING
That 'frayed ends of sanity' solo rythm riff blows everything in this list out of the water...its what a guitar would sound if you'd cast it into a tornado
True dat! I blame my carpel tunnel syndrome on the hours I spent trying to master that rhythm under the solo.
Also the fact that it comes right after a very fast and tight galloping rhythm, and the fact that it goes on for so long galloping like a maniac... It took me a while to get that thing down
Nailed it, and the list is spot on!
very well played, thanks for sharing Karri.
I’ve always found Fight Fire With Fire to be one of their heaviest songs.
Fight Fire With Fire and Blackened even sounds so slow here lmao Metallica was insane back then
Absolutely amazing!
As you play these riffs, it seems like so easy, though we all know, how hard it realy is!! 😊🤗🤘👍
Hats off to you, sír, and I subscribed, no question!!!
Go on brother!!!!
Thank you so much Peter! :)
I started playing guitar this year, in the beginning of the video I was impressed, like OMG it will take a long time until I play these songs, but then battery showed off, and the fact that I already play it hyped me up a lot to get into the other ones, thanks!
I'm pretty good at most of these but the two that always give me trouble is Disposable Heroes and Blackened. Tbh I think Disposable is harder than MOP.
most songs of master of puppets could have made the list
Well that's true, I tried to get songs from other albums as well to spice the video up a little bit :)
Master of Puppets and The Thing That Should Not Be aren't that bad.
And Load LMAO😂
Damage inc.
Leper Messiah, The Thing That Should Not Be and Orion are real easy imo
That was fantastic!!
Killin it bro
Many of Metallica's hardest riffs are hard due to lots of down-picking, gallopy picking, and extended power chords, as well as a need for moving quickly across the neck.

Respect to Jason Newsted for being chosen because of his ability to keep up with James
Check out his stuff in flotsam and jetsam. He plays faster stuff there than what he did in Metallica
How do you make it so that the guitars and vocals are left out? Thanks.
Hi Boyd, I actually made the drum track myself with a software then played the guitar track over it, there's no original Metallica recorded parts :) Thanks for the comment!
Boyd Mulders just look up Metallica backing tracks. Not hard to find
Fabulous man ! I think that Blackened is the hardest riff of all by far. Keep on going dude you nail it \m/
Nice video,well done
Those riffs are why I still, and always will, respect Metallica.
Only on Kill Em All and on one or two songs from Ride the Lightning. The best songs came after Mustaine
You just took my everyday guitar practicing setlist and recorded it, hehe
Simstrag hah pretty good practice routine ;)
My thought is that a lot of people haven't attempted to play Fight Fire with Fire. That second riff is crazy difficult riff to get exactly right. Great playing, really enjoyed this vid!
