@@Kikester as me you perfectly put it. It gives the riff a different I think more aggressive attack than alternate picking. Listen to 1000 points of hate by Anthrax for a perfect example or Metallica's master of puppets.
@Me You I wouldn't say use down pickingjust because you can. Dimebag delivered his punches using upstrokes

in defense to what op said, where I grew up all you ever heard was metallica and slayer metallica and slayer.. megadeth almost never heard of and anthrax even less. thank goodness guitar hero introduced me
Surprised to see Skeletons in the Closest not make the list. Sustaining those triplets for five minutes requires a lot of stamina.

Karri Hanninen the fretting on the neck isn’t hard at all, it’s the picking and the tempo that and quick subtle patterns that fuck you up. Sometimes, my hand isn’t warmed up enough to keep up

FINALLY Finale and Blood are getting some love, two awesome and underrated Anthrax songs...
Finale was one of my favourites out of these! \,,/ Blood was also insanely thrashy and the vocals are great in that!

If you go to any metal forum people talk about the band that should be in their place at #4 Testament, Overkill, etc. They have the best singer in the scene, and they ate sh!t for a decade when he was out. I used to love'em but especially what they did to their lead guitar player on the 40th anniversary stream, turned him way down in the mix, bummed me out. I checked out.

Scott Ian is a monster. Criminally underrated. Tightest rythm player in Thrash.
As a unit Scott,Charlie & Frank were the tightest rhythm section amongst the thrash scene.I still believe my what my ears tell me.
James hetfield is tighter but Scott's pretty close
