They call it ’blue gold.’ Around the world, demand for water is exploding. By 2050, at least one in four will live in a country suffering from water shortages - creating ideal conditions for a new market…
Goldman Sachs, HSBC, UBS, Allianz, Deutsche Bank, BNP. Banks, investment funds, and hedge funds are all rushing to invest billions of euros in anything related to water. A real monopoly of water has begun.
From California to Australia, from New York to London via Marseille, we investigate the financialization of water. New power relations are being established and access to water is being threatened.
It’s a battle taking place on many fronts: ideological, political, environmental, and of course, economic. The fate of nearly 10 billion inhabitants depends on the outcome.

This is so unbelievable to turn water into a commodity I am so Fn angry and all they care about is making money for the shareholders.
I hate the stock exchange market I never ever will buy shares. This is madness lunacy I hope it pours with rain so that these water barons make no money out of a natural resource. I never imagined water would become a commodity so that people would charge high prices to please greedy shareholders I hope they all drown. Poor garners losing their properties an awful thing to watch very distressing so unfair.
You water barons hope you drown in water. Psychopaths all of you

In the United States the privatization of power and water shot the price sky high. Water and power went from being a service to being a luxury with the idea of making them as profitable as possible and make people pay as much as they can possibly afford. Before tax payers were charged a fee that covered distribution but storage and exploration cost were carried by everyone. Now people are charged for everything even if taxpayers still pay for wells, reservoirs, canals and levees.

Here in the US, local cities, counties, and states have privatized water for yrs. In the part of Arizona I used yo live in, there was a Canadian company that owned the local water company. Until just 1 or 2 yrs ago when the city bought it & they have screwed it all up and mismanaged it and now are in debt because that puchase brought so much oversight into how the city does things, that now my non-profit rent is being increased. I rent a space from the city to supply assistance with needed comodity. They were ever so happy to get me in the space 10 yrs ago, but now I am being looked at as a cash cow.

There need to be lengthy prison terms for any one who charge a price for drinking water over what production (treatment) and distribution actually costs. The water is not property anyone has a right to charge for, only what is done to it to make it drinkable and to bring it to our homes. Yes the price will differ between next to a clean river or in the middle of a desert but that is as it should be because of actual costs, not water speculation. Why the Australian farmers do not use atmospheric condensators with solar panels with all the sun they have I do not understand, it is not more expensive than paying for water on the "market". There are more drinkable water in the air than all surface water combined, and the hotter it gets the more water the air can hold. It is just hard to get without the right equipment.
