  • It's that time of the year again! I place our curriculum and homeschool orders just before school starts and again in the winter. There's no better way to brighten your school with these rich colored supplies! The wool felt our favorite go-to supply for many of the homeschool projects we do. Other familiar products are the stockmar block and stick crayons which we are using almost daily in our form drawing and block crayon coloring. We had to replenish our supplies of peg dolls and even ordered the super size ones for the first time. We got more Lyra opaque watercolors, thin sheets of beeswax for modeling and two more honeycomb candle rolling kits. We also got plant dyed silks and felt for the first time and a straw star kit we are excited to try. We got book 2 and 4 of our Gnome book Tales of Limindoor Forest. We got more origami supplies and a book to help us on that journey as well as a book on sewing stuffed animals. The kits by Threadfollower were a hit, so we bought three more! Some wool for felting and other felting supplies rounded out our haul.

    Some notes about wool from Debbie at A Child's Dream:
    The 3 wools we offer are Merino (classified as a fine wool), Corriedale (classed as a medium wool) , and Romney (a coarse wool - our Wilde Wool is Romney wool). They're all different types of fibers with different qualities with one being better in one application over another. NOT one necessarily a better wool over another.
    Merino has short fibers or staple length and is very soft. It is a fast wet felter but a very slow needle felter and challenging for beginner spinners because of the short staple length.
    Corriedale is longer, is great for beginner spinners, great for beginning wet felting since it doesn't felt so fast you can't control what you're doing, and great for needle felting, too. Corriedale is a good multipurpose wool and is what comes in the WoolPets kits we love and sell.
    Romney is coarse and is what our Wilde Wool is. It's not as soft as Merino or Corriedale and is a very fast needle felting fiber. My customers doing production work gravitate to the Wilde Wool. It wet felts but it takes longer to do so we advise against using this for felting with children. It spins nicely and it's coarseness makes it a durable yarn that you wouldn't want to use against the skin but maybe for rugs or that sort of thing.

    If you put your already mixed stockmar watercolors in the fridge they last for months, in my experience they last well over 6 months in the fridge without going bad.

    If you haven't tried it, you should try dyeing your own silks with plants (or food coloring). It's REALLY fun and the results are so dynamic and beautiful. Also super easy and affordable (I buy raw silk from.dharma trading Co on Amazon)

    Such terrific materials and crafts! Look at those awesome watercolor sets! Smart swap-out! We love to create, and you always show us great new things to do. We have just recently started to enjoy felt (thanks to your peg people!!). We've never wet-felted (or felted for that matter), but are now also interested in that because of your Earth's Layers project!

    I'm starting my commenting at minute 4...let's see if this keeps me from making 1,000 posts. 1) I can already tell this video may induce craft supply envy...ahhh, the beautiful boxes full of beautiful colors! 2) I just got out embroidery work to do yesterday (hit with the flu this week, I was looking for something easy), it's apparent, I don't know what I'm doing at all. Love that stitch book, that might help me. 3) Felt, felt...I love the felt! 4) The easy Origami book looks great! 5) Favorite lines...Oh, I didn't read the directions, I have a problem with that. :-) Oh neat, does that come in English? You keep me laughing! 5) I love the way the yarn looks, beautiful!

    I am looking forward to the projects you will make!! we are just new crafters of peg dolls and still newbies at felting, but we have been inspired by your projects to try several things of our own. My 10 year old asked me when I was going to teach him to knit - I told him we'd start in 2018. I'm finding that I'm doing fewer field trips and co-ops with my younger kids but I'm far more willing to do handicrafts because I feel like what we create will actually be keepsakes and toys they can enjoy! I am especially intrigued by the straw kit! It was on my wish list but I opted to wait until I finish our months and seasonal peg dolls. so much good information in this video!!

    Will frey check work around the small plant dyed silks? that way you dont have to hem.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety

      That's a good idea, and I think I have some. Hemming silk is time consuming.

  • @SodbusterLiving
    @SodbusterLiving Před 6 lety

    Do you have a video on the reasoning behind the larger brush and something I can graps and understand more? I get the tiny ones-- but the brush, like the one you were showing as an example to get for the younger kids, seems like it would be harder to create because its so big.

    • @jacintaanderson
      @jacintaanderson Před 6 lety

      SodbusterLiving the larger brush is used to create large areas of wash which is easier for young children who dont have finer details down pact yet.

    We have a lot of gift tissue, any ideas on how to use?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety +1

      When I 'lead' a craft, I use the tissue paper as mosaics. I just it up into squares and we'll do landscapes on clear contact paper and then hang it in the window. My kids started doing the alphabet like that. It does fade faster than the kite paper. When my girl uses it, she uses it for all kinds of things! Most recently, she used it with washi tape to turn her dolls into mermaids. She made mermaid tails from it!

    Do you recommend the pallete watercolor paint or the liquid paint. The pallete paint is much cheaper, but I see a lot of people using the liquid paint. We are starting a Waldorf program next year.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety

      Good question, Kathrine. What ages are your children? If your kids are young and you want to follow a more authentic approach, then buy the liquid ones, large good quality paper and the wide brushes. Those materials will be good for pre-k through 2nd grade easily. Instead of getting the six pack, just get a three pack of Stockmar paints. The primary are all you need in the beginning because the first lessons are just on one color and later it's important that the children experience the mixing of the colors to make the secondary colors.

    • @katherinetrumbauer5011
      @katherinetrumbauer5011 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for responding Hannah. My children are 2,5, and 8. We will be using the oak meadow curriculum, so we will only be semi-authentic.

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety

      For sure! What's nice about the wet on wet technique and large paint brushes is that it's easier for little hands and good for gross motor skills. Around 5th grade or so is when students transition to the finer brushes.

      But doesn't he know I'm an arachnophobe!! Haha, that's a great idea, though. And I'm going to do it! What's his name so I can say who gave me the idea?

    • @raisingup7
      @raisingup7 Před 6 lety

      I didn't have the heart to tell him that insects/spiders aren't your favorite :) oh, if we were closer I'd volunteer to teach your kids all about creepy crawlies. My oldest were boys, and their love of the subject meant we spent lots of time handling and learning about wildlife of all sorts. The kids who came later followed in their footsteps for the most part. When my youngest was a toddler and we discovered she was terrified of plastic bugs, her older siblings were appalled by her lack of backbone, LOL!
      But arts and crafts? that's a whole different animal at our house, LOL!
