  • CATBOAT SAILING | SKINNY WATER SERIES 2019: NASHAWENA ISLAND 2019!
I'm so excited to bring you this new series all about sailing the skinny waters of Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. "Sailing Skinny Waters" is all about finding those shallow water gunkholing spots that only a shallow draft sailboat, like a CatBoat, can go. Our first adventure into these waters will take us to an island in the Elizabeth Islands chain called "Nashawena Island"
The Elizabeths are a chain of islands off the coast of Woods Hole on Cape Cod. The majority of these islands are privately held by the Naushon Island Trust, a family trust dedicated to the preservation of the natural beauty of these islands since 1898.
Nashawena Island is the second largest island in the Elizabeths. It contains a small harbor that can only be accessed by a shallow draft boat. Nashawena Harbor offers good protection and wonderful scenery.
As I understand, the harbor can be can be entered at any stage of the tide. BUT there are sandbars and rocks that line both sides of the entrance that make the approach a little tricky. You will want to approach the harbor by means of two ranges. First you will want to align yourself up on a straight line between the Gull Island Bell (about a half a mile north of the Nashawena Harbor) and the monument on the ridge behind the farm. The monument marks the grave of Captain Edward Merrill, who retired there.
As you approach the harbor on this line, you will see two white signs on the beach. One behind the other. You will want to keep these lined up. No need to worry about the rocks to your right.
Then you want to turn left upon reaching the spindle, where you will notice the second range between the spindle and the dock up ahead. Once you reach the dock, you may anchor anywhere in the harbor, being respectful of course of the family who lives close by. Beware of the grassy bottom in the middle of the harbor. The closer you are to the beaches or edges of the harbor the better. That's where the best holding grounds are.

Hi Kristen, Many thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. I'm in the process of revamping my original Slocum River video, where I cut back on some of the boring footage and replaced it with some really stunning arial footage of the river. I should have that video out in the next week or so. I'm looking for a weather window to come down to the boat to video my intro narrative. Also I am planning on three more videos in the next three-four weeks in the Hadley Harbor area. Then I will have to hang up my hat for the season. Except that I still want to have a behind the scenes video of Marshall Marine building a 22. Many thanks again. Jim...
