The future of seeding technology is focused on adapting on-the-fly

  • Seeding technology has come a long way in a short time, but the same general principles apply: deliver seed in a uniform rate, at the desired depth with very little seed damage, with good furrow closure and pressure, all while rolling over changing terrain.
Figuring out how to achieve all those goals is a daunting task, and every brand of seeding equipment approaches the goal from a slightly different angle.
Don Henry is the CEO of SeedMaster Manufacturing, and he has been a key part of the evolution of seeding equipment and technology over several decades.
Henry says, looking forward, the name of the game will be adaptation - how quickly a seeder set up can adapt to changing soil type or seeding conditions, and through adding more of the adjustments required either automatically or at the touch of a button from the cab.
There's room for more automation in the future, too, Henry says, but seeding and planting isn't the first priority for autonomy. There's just so much riding on that pass.
