    Another good video. Those cows did a better job on those thistle than I would have ever thought

      They do a great job on the thistles.

    I saw a video once that made a connection between calm animals (not bothered by humans near them) and weed consumption. Calming them was demonstrated as a deliberate process involving gently mirroring their 'I want to run away' reactions. When the sheep (in that case) stopped reacting to the handlers they got interested in feed that before they wouldn't touch. One interpretation (mine) of that 'training' was that the animals got the idea that a capable protector was on hand, they could relax and experiment a little. The also nailed those thistles. Calming was demonstrated on cows as well but they weren't followed into the feed paddock. The major proponent was a woman, trust them to think about the social angles to herd management. It was also impressive.

    Good technique. The thistle also has an anaerobic symbiotic bacteria, so it needs low oxygen levels in the soil. Soil compaction or excess water are the usual way to get low oxygen.

    my father-in-law used to have me spray a mixture of water/molasses on the young plants and them cows would devour the thistles and what ever this mix was sprayed on

      Salt water works well to. Have sprayed it grasses that were passed their prime. Just have watch the cows will graze it short.

    Wow that's awesome. Cattle are such a wonderful tool used properly. I only have 2 steers are the impact just from them is crazy. We have got ridiculous rain I have standing water on some of my pasture. Last year we were in a drought.

      I've seen forage test on Canadian Thistles @ 34% crude protein. So it is very good feed. It also has a lot of micro-nutrients. Thanks for Watching!!

    Where do you live and how do you market cattle?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm in north western Pennsylvania. I have an odd way of marketing. I have always concentrated on quality. I advertised one time years ago. Now everything is sold by the word of mouth. About 80% are sold as breeding stock and the other 20% as freezer beef. We can't meet demand. Thanks for Watching!!!

    In the area where you mentioned the stalks being curly dock, how many head would you have had on that and for how long? It looks great for residue. We are getting too much selective grazing and not enough trample with even one day moves so I'm guessing we don't have enough animals for the area we are giving them?

  • @bowersbees7523

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 3 lety +4

      Yes you can do the seem thing with goats and sheep. I think sheep actually do a better job then cattle. When I do it with sheep. We would put 220 ewes on a 1/2 acre and move them twice a day. The regrowth is amazing from the sheep and goats!!! Thanks for watching!!!
