If you ever saw the bear scat left after eating the huckleberries, you would have new respect for the bears. They eat the bushes, berries, leaves and limbs. Having seen the piles of sticks that pass through the bear, I wouldn’t want to tackle with one unarmed. Anything that can crap those sticks has my respect.

I have a rental in the mountains and despite my best instructions to tenants about how to handle garbage, they leave it where the bears can have a picnic. One time, there was a huge pile of scat there rivaling an elephant on his best day! Ravioli and pizza were on the menu so far as I can determine.

When mom and I went to Glacier years ago, we were instructed to walk with a good amount of noise, and carry a "bear-bell" at all times. NEVER surprise a bear.

It's very easy
having hiked that trail on numerous occasions (5000+ Glacier trail miles in 35+ years), i can tell you that it's heavily wooded, it's a twisting trail going up a drainage, the trail is uneven so people tend to look down a lot, and bears may smell you long before an encounter and can ambush you before you can react.
This can happen easily. Just be some cell phone tied at the hip urbanite.
Bears need this food to survive!
Wife and I went to Montana last nov, snowy, cold. GreatI can hike as the bears are sleeping. I had no idea griz do not hibernate, if food supply is plentiful. Then I saw a bear toss a log ( exactly like a 4 in wood fencepole ) about 6 feet with his nose. I didnt go far from the car.
How odd. In Canada, huckleberries are small and red, yes the bears love them too.
Common sense 101: do not hike/camp near any bear food😂😂.

I enjoyed this video a lot, it was very informative. But there are two points that could stand correction. Craig Dahl wasn't the worst tragedy in GNP, and there has been a bear attack on a group of more than four people. August 13, 1967...two separate fatal grizzly attacks on the same night.
Roy Ducat and Julie Helgeson were camping at Granite Park Campground. A grizzly severely mauled Ducat, and killed Helgeson.
Several hours later at Trout Lake, a group of five people asleep in bags, when a different grizzly dragged Michelle Koons off, and partially consumed her.
These events were documented in a book called Night of the Grizzlies, by Jack Olsen. It's a very good book.
I have to agree with you,Lorraine! It was ludicrous for the narrator to say that 4 or more people have never been attacked in Glacier National Park!
I was in the park at the time these attacks you’re talking about happened. It was a dry summer and lightning strikes set off fires in numerous places. We took relatives from California with my family to visit the park. I think I recall that they were park employees who were attacked. Both parties were camping off remote trails about 20 miles apart. The bears were both sows and were driven down to lower elevations by the lightning strikes. Everywhere we went in the park, people were talking about it and holding memorials. I think many of the trails were closed because of it. It was a big story and in all of my years camping there, I’d never heard of it happening before. So, like you, I’m very surprised that this event wasn’t mentioned in this video!

@@whiteroseangel1511 Thank you for your concern but I was never in danger. These deaths occurred in wilderness areas where the victims were camping off remote trails. We camped in designated campgrounds filled with hundreds of people. That’s not to say it can’t happen but generally it’s safer in public campgrounds.
@@terrywade3696 these events took place in rather "special times": in those days they did not make food/trash inaccessible to bears. In fact the reverse was happening: they used to accumulate trash at the Chalet in Granite Lake and would "entertain" the summer tourists watching the grizzlies "feast" on the trash. It is hard to imagjne a more idiotic idea. It was sure to make some bears sick and obviously more aggressive and hungry. And of course associate food with people. A real powder keg.
The bear boxes for food storage were designed right after that ... and no more trash show I guess. See Stephen Herrero on causes and avoidance of bear attacks

As for the statement that a Grizzly attack has never occurred with a group involving 4 or more people. Review "Night of the Grizzlies" which is a video about 2 attacks that occurred on the same night by two different Grizzly bears that resulted in not only injuries to the other members of the parties, but death for 1 person in each different group.
Yep and there were 5 in one group and more than that in the other. The “other” group was not together but many people in the same area. So that stat is incorrect

I saw an nteresting program on why people do not react to serious danger, psychological traits that are common are in people who have a "script" in their head about how things go, and follow it, no matter what. It's a type of denial, if someone follows their script of how things should go, believe they are safe, even if confronted by serious dangers, like a fire. Several people in films stood in line at a convenience store even while it was burning down, unable to process a change. They feel if they just do what they always do, nothing bad will happen. Obviously, this is a terrible tactic. Children especially, should be taught to speak, not follow the "herd" and learn to assess danger. Adults will often reassure children even when yelling, "run", "duck", or "get out", confusing them and causing them to freeze in their inability to act. Kids should be taught that ALL parents should not be blindly followed, it can be fatal. Teaching children by role playing is extremely effective. They get a chance to learn to speak up and act, if neccessary, and you can help them decide of which course of action is appropriate.
That psychological trait has been in full view recently with all those video clips of people walking right up to bison to get their selfies (and that one woman who was trying to touch one - lucky for her he just gave her a couple "gentle" hornless head butts to get her out his way). Unbelievable how so many "advanced" humans have lost their instinctual fear when confronted with serious danger in nature.
In East Glacier we came across several bears (at a distance) in a single days walk. I am surprised that they claimed only a thousand bears in the entire park.
Been to several N. Parks. This is one of the Top 3. But really Love them all. God creation is awesome.

The woman who got partially eaten wasn't a tourist and he went out of his way to get "up close and personal" with a grizzly. They should have moved that mother again, along with her cubs, and said no more about it. It was a park service employee that brought that disaster upon herself and was not because the mother bear was a "trouble maker" since she 18 months old. What a crock. I don't trust people from "The US Fish and Wildlife Service." Federal government agencies usually take the easy way out.
Surely there is a more productive solution available for a bear that is so accustomed to being fed by humans than to simply kill it. Are there no sanctuaries or anything willing to take any of these animals?

@@marianparoo1544 If it's a tossup between shooting them or relocating them to someplace where they can live out their days on their terms, which would you choose? It's not likely that they're going to close down the park and give it back to the flora and fauna any time soon.

@@cougar031682 The bears are probably outnumbered by the people working there, not to mention the tourists and local trekkers. Even if the parks were "closed," do you still think the bears would outnumber humans?
Right. And they killed that bear and her offspring because the idiot employed by the park itself went out with the intent to get involved with grizzlies. She put herself in harm's way and guaranteed the eradication of a mother bear and TWO cubs. Humans and their grandiose fantasies are a real problem. They moved that mother bear once before and they should have paid to relocate her and her cubs this time too. After all, and again, it was a park employee who caused the PR disaster for the park.
20 miles away? Not a solution, more of a vacation for the bear.

I've always been a bit confused about bear spray. I've watched I can't even count how many vids swearing that it doesn't always work, and can sometimes attract them. I dont plan on being on any trails, but I do boondock in my small rv. I always makes sure not to have ANY food or good smelling stuff anywhere around my camp, and make sure to get rid of trash. But what IF one comes across me? I suppose having spray is better than nothing, but I worry a little about it. I also have a gun, but would hate using it on an animal.
Bear spray has 95% success rate.
