I know it's work and you are doing on a commercial level but it's nice to see a family working together!! I enjoy watching you guys and thank you for sharing!!!
Thanks Jb. I love working with my boys. They work hard and love what they do. It great to have a crew that knows what to do before you do and never needs to be told or reminded of their duties.
Recently found this channel, and I thoroughly enjoy the content. We go rock cod fishing out of Monterey, CA, and I do quite a bit of surf fishing, as well as trout fishing locally in the Bay Area. I wonder, how often do you guys consume your own catch (crab, salmon, cod, etc.)? Great work on both the boat and the YT channel, cheers!

I hate dealing with octopus when fishing for spot prawns. If we let them go they would find the string of pots once we put our string back out and we would catch them again the next day.
Not silly at all. We use survey data, where we caught crab in the past, and of course a whole lot of luck! The first day or so can be a little slow, as we move pots around to try and get on the crab.
Haha! Thanks Ken. Great crew (and family) so I never have to bark at them. My boys have been on boats since they were babies, so they know what needs to be done. I'm proud to be their father and skipper!
I'm curious why you hand pick each crab out of the pot. Why not suspend the pot above your square tub and let them drop in? Crabs get busted up that way?
That would be much easier and efficient Ed. The reason we don't is just limited space to set up a pot launcher/dumper. Surveys show we have a big pulse of crab on the way in a few years, so that is something we will improve upon.
We usually put up 100 pounds or so of salmon, frozen and canned. The rockfish we have access to year round so we don't really store that much. We also direct market most of our catch, and any seals that fail on the packaging we will just keep for personal use.
The way you threw the octopus back in the water, LOL!
Lol! I admit there was a small amount of annoyance in that throw! Hehe.

Thank you very much!
Love the video, where do you get your pots? I’ve been inspired to give it a shot out of Whittier!
That octopus you guys threw back would go for about sixty bucks at the seafood market here. great video!
Yea, if it wasn't an extended trip we would have kept it to sell. Thanks for your comments!

Oh yeah, they are a real pain. Usually the pot is just shells when it comes up, when we used to do dungies we had the same problem.
How would you know the right place to fish or drop your pots?
Hope this is not a silly question.

How many pots do you run regards Roland West Aust
For the Tanner crab fishery there is a 20 pot limit for all vessels. We are also only allowed to fish from 8 am to 6 pm.
Are you keeping any octopus? I sure would love to purchase a nice one to make a spicy stew with it .
Hi Herb. That is something we have been considering for this year. There is a good market of octopus.
I know that you have to stock up on food for the winter. How much of what you catch do you get to keep for your family during the rough winter months

Mmmmm.....seals. lol
