- This video details the rear cargo bed platform and drawer storage system that I built in my 3rd gen (02) 4runner. This is a low-cost and relatively simple build that my father and I completed in one day. I tried to include as many details as possible, but know that I certainly missed some instructions. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any additional clarification.
DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a carpenter. Enjoy the video, and definitely let me know if you have any questions!

"If you wanna use the back seats, you can." Immediate like.
fuck the back seats
The aggression lolll
But, I know how you feel. I tossed the 3rd row out of my suburban. Like, "I dont need it." Haha
@@florindagonzalez5700 I'm 6'2. So, the back seats have to go, I sleep head to hatch so my feet can hang
So far this is leading the list of best and easiest 3rd Gen conversions. We’ll done. Thanks
by far the best design we've seen! thank you for sharing!
This build is awesome! I’ve watched multiple other videos on building a drawer system and yours is the cleanest and most compelling one I’ve seen yet! I appreciate the cut measurements you include, but I wonder if you’d be willing to also show a list of raw materials so I know how many of each to purchase. Planning to do a nearly identical build in the near future and would love a simplified shopping list!
howd it turn out
Love it!! Doing this to my 4Runner this year
As soon as I saw the food and water bowls I loved this build.
This is the slickest setup for a 4Runner I've seen in a long time. Great attention to detail and maximizing all space. I didn't expect to see a full backseat there under the platform! Suhweeeeeet
Great video Matt! This build is one of my favorites i've seen. taking lots of notes from it, cheers
Thanks for the kind words! Happy building
Simple yet so effective my man thank you
Well there you have it, the most realistic and well thought out bed platform I've seen yet
That is EXACTLY the issue I am facing with my '99! Brilliant, thanks!
Awesome build. Well done!
Super great build man. By far one of the most simplest and cleanest designs out there which include a drawer. Definitely gonna snag some ideas from this including the dog bowls. Hope to see some more content of some trips with this thing. 👍🏻🤟🏻
Thanks for all the measurements and the attention to detail! I love the poly drawer slide idea. The drawer slides I found were $50-90 per pair so this will help me save alot
Thanks Matt, loved the design and it worked out perfectly.
Did a few adjustments to suit my needs but everything worked out great!
BRAVO ZULU! Excellent job.
This is brilliant. Gonna copy it exactly.. might do my own measurements... Thank You!
That bed to backseat and vis versa speed is great. Not tedious very quick and easy. Didn’t mean to but totally said “wow” out loud 😂
Best one of these i have seen so far. well done
One of the few videos I've seen after buying my 4runner and wow 👏 this was great. Awesome stuff and thanks for sharing 👍 😀
Awesome video! I particularly like your co-host Timber!
Super clean set up!
best one I've seen by far, nicely done.
Great vid !! Love the setup and Timber too!
Matt, I’ve watched what seems to be all of the build out videos for Toyota and yours is far and away the nicest cleanest build!
Thanks for the great concise video.,
Very cool. When I saw the back seats still in place I was thinking oh man this build is too short for me. But you addressed the issue perfectly and I can 't wait to do the same build!
Glad to hear it!
Great job man, your design is the best one I've seen yet
Thanks!
Best build out ive seen, nicely done. I really like the false top on drawer, perfect cooking space
Love it ! Looking for ideas for my 3rd gen. This one is the best so far.
Nice video, some good ideas there. I also like the Napier tent(ish) item you recommended to Nathan. Thanks for posting.
this is awesome!!! exactly what i was thinking about
Nice one, the best one i have seen 👌
Nice job, I like the simplicity of it.
Great Build Matt! Thx for the Video!
Brilliant!
That is pretty awesome. I was thinking of doing something similar. This gives me some ideas.
better than the others ive seen by far. well done! id love to get the design plans if its at all possible. your dad did great work with that design. hats off.
Nicely done! This is way more efficient than the one I use for my 3rd Gen. I will be building your version soon I hope!
Yeah nice touch with those beverage holders on either side of the platform build. Really good job on that👍🏼👍🏼
Nice set up.
Nice work!
super sick set up
Matt, great video! I currently have a system in my 3rd Gen but I noticed a few things from yours that I like a little more and will probably make some changes down the road!👍🏼
Nice! Feel free to shoot me any questions once you start your modifications🤙🏻
The dogs water & food bowl. Is cute ❤
super duper clean!
Great video!
This was an awesome build. Love the attention to detail! Would love to replicate the double unfolding platform to create something for my Rav4 Hybrid. Great job man! Cheers
Nicely done. Thank you.
Nicely done!
Nice job dude
Great build
great build man and go bruins!
Looks very practical.. Nice
Great build, well demonstrated. This goes on my “Model Build” playlist. Subbed and thumbs upped.🌿
Awesome!
I now know what im going to do thanks to you
Gonna try and attempt this
Brilliant! 😎
Nice build!
Great build. I may have to design mine based on yours. Thanks
excellent
That is awesome third GEN best GEN
Great build! Thank you for sharing, I have been searching for an extension concept like this for a while. Well done!
Muy bueno. Felicitaciones
Simple genius bro. I have looked at several videos and done a lot of measuring and sketching in my 2001 4runner, and this is the design I want to go with! If you are so inclined, dimensions would be very helpful. Thanks for an awesome video! Aloha!
Thanks, and glad to hear it! Dimensions are in the video description. Happy building!
Genius!
Thanks bro!
Very clever.
Every video I watch of these, everyone has their own unique "Stamp" and personal coolness factor. So simple yet so effective.
So sick! I’m getting a 3rd gen at the end of the month and want to do this with mine.. Would you consider doing a more in-depth video to give me a better idea of the build’s logistics.. Measurements I see in the description, but in addition maybe a list of tools, screw/hinge sizing, etc? Either way, I love the vid and thanks for putting this out there for everyone!
best bed build.
Best set up, caters to dogs too!
Genius
I'm going to do something similar in mine without the bed platform. I am also going to cut out homes along the 2x4 and in the base of the drawers housing to lighten it up. Using large pieces of ply like this makes it REALLY heavy and I'm not sleeping on it.
WICKED PISSAH!
I couldn’t continue watching this because you kept looking one way then the other before my eyes could grasp what you were showing.
Excellent job matt coming from a contractor
I’m thinking and wondering if adding some UHMW along the top sections on the left and right far sides (on underside of the 3/4” ply top ) would help guide and support the drawer - was there a reason why you didn’t
At 6'3 I can barely fit in the back of may 4th gen with no adjustments to the front seats 😂 Looking forward to building something like this so I don't have to sleep next to my gear!
Very nicely done, Matt....I applaud the ingenuity that went into your design.
Just starting on a similar build for my Taco and am leaning towards teflon or the polyethylene for the slides as well; the commercial metal slides are fiendishly expensive, and if they jam up when you're out in the boonies you could be screwed....I'm thinking the plastic slides are pretty much foolproof. Now that you've (likely) used it for a few months, are you happy with the plastic slides?
Thanks for taking the time to post!
And BTW...as an 'old guy', I really like the nod to your Da at the end....very nice touch.
The plastic slides are absolutely the way to go. They slide as well today as they did 7 months ago. I use the drawer almost daily. Thanks for the kind words!
@@mattieinthemountains1812 , Thanks Brother, very much appreciate ya getting back to me!
Plastic it is!
Be well, enjoy your rig!
Love this build! Gearing up to get started on putting this together myself. Matt, after using it a few years anything you would change or do differently?
those cup holders are game changer. and i really like that drawer cover is also a kitchen table. have a 5th gen but this is inspiring. definitely got that wow factor. nice work!
This is great. I’m doing mine at the moment in my 97 hilux surf. I’m using your fold out style. I hope it comes out as good.
I have a question. How much weight did this bed add to your truck?
Thanks.
Brillent
damn, this is so sick, i can't wait to do this in my '01 i just bought! thanks!!
quick question: did you have home depot/lowe's make any pre-cuts to the plywood? how many sheets total did you get, and did they all fit in your 4runner or did you need a bigger truck for the materials transport?
Go to CZcams channel Seeking the Stoke with Neeks and watch Tour of My Car Camping Set-up video. In the description he lists all the tools, materials, parts, components and cuts he used to make a similar build as this one.
Those PE runners are a good idea. A lot of builds I've seen use drawer slides which sacrifice a good 1/2" to 1" on each side. Your build (or at least the video) is relatively new, but have you experienced any issues with this method?
And painting the wood dark is the way to go. I'm planning to do that with mine.
Hi Scott - I use this drawer A LOT and have not had any issues. It’s still sliding just as well as the day I built it.
hey Matt, thanks for sharing - it’s great! I have your same car and want to replicate. can you confirm which dimension is which for the top and bottom sections of the rear part of the platform? the length and width are only a quarter inch different and i don’t want to mess this up lol. thanks dude
Excellent! Want to build another?? Jk. Im going to attempt this
Liked your built very much!
I am curious about all these platforms: how is it possible to reach the spare wheel in case it’s needed? Any ideas?
Thanks.
The spare wheel is located under the truck, so the platform doesn't interfere with access. You just need to be able to access the tool under the rear passenger seat. There is a rod you place into your back bumper and twist. It then lowers the spare. There's videos on CZcams that show the process.
Badass, make a build guide.
Love the build Matt. My question is have you put a lot of weight on the platform, more specifically the rear part of the platform, closer to the lift gate. Reason why I ask is because I use my car to carry (sometimes) up to 2,000 pounds in the rear. Of course I know it’s wood so it’s possible it would break the platform but what would you say the weight capacity of this platform is?
@Matt Desrosiers awesome thank you!!
Hey man love this. Pretty new at this so trying to figure out how those guides work?
Pretty simple! They are frictionless and self-lubricating, so the drawer slides easily once everything is cut to size
@@mattieinthemountains1812 is the plastic sheet you listed in the description cut-able with a table saw? how did you cut it? then, can a simple screw / power drill go thru it to attach to the inside of the frame? or how did you attach?
thanks :)
I wanna do this to mine but does all the stuff really rattle around when you're offroading it? or does it stay relatively tight?
Thanks for sharing this. I just got an 02 this year and am looking at doing something similar. I'm 6'5'' so I'm thinking I might use the drawer & false top to extend the bed. Any thoughts on that? (obviously that would mean leaving the hatch open to rain and bugs, but I figure on nice nights it would work. Also, roughly how much $ do you think this whole build costs? Lastly, is there anything you would do differently next time? Thanks again! -Nate
Hi Nathan - I like the idea of using the drawer as a bed platform extension. My build is 74 inches long so you would only need 3 more inches to support your height. Only issue would be the difference in height between the top of the drawer and the platform (about 3/4 inches). My thought is you could just lay some clothes or a pillow down on the false top to fix the discrepancy. I'd recommend getting something like this - www.amazon.com/Napier-Sportz-Cove-61500-Minivan/dp/B01NA6NXB3/ref=asc_df_B01NA6NXB3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=218094726470&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4471697968747163508&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002424&hvtargid=pla-356353890943&psc=1 - so you can extend the drawer and not get bothered by bugs. I spent around $200 total for this build. The most expensive part was the wood. I'm really really pleased with the functionality and ease of use of this system. I might have gone with 2x10s instead of 2x8s to have a little more room in the drawers/understorage, but with your height I think 2x8s are still the way to go. Let me know if you have any more questions!
How do you prevent the drawer from moving out completely and falling on the ground? Is there any stop mechanism?
Hey Matt, does this build rattle at all? The supports for the extension look like they could make some noise
Exactly what I've been looking for being 5"10...Please tell me you have a diagram/build sheet? New Subscriber 👍 👍..Looks AWESOME..lmk
Now I need someone that can help me build it lol
Nice build. I'm camera dizzy
Hi Matt, really like your set up. I have a 2021 Toyota Sienna and you gave me hope for great ideas. Hmm would you like to help me build my van? =)
Great video thanks for sharing. How deep is that drawer, about 3 feet deep? Also how far can you extend it out before it starts to fall out? Have you had any issues with reaching items deep in the drawers? Trying to decide between UHMW and full extension slides.
Thanks! Yes, the drawer is just over 3 feet deep I believe. It starts to get wobbly/weak when it’s just about completely extended, but I never really need to pull it open that far to access anything. I’m extremely pleased with the UHMW slides because of how solid it is
MATTIE IN THE MOUNTAINS okay sweet that’s good to know. Yeah I’ve pretty much decided on doing UHMW slides now over ball bearings. They just seem more sturdy and there’s a lot less to break or go wrong. Thanks!
