Here's my tip for using novelty yarn for amigurumi. Crochet the pieces you want to be fuzzy (maybe the head and body are fuzzy but the nose and hands aren't or whatever, you get the idea) using a smooth yarn FIRST in BLO. Then, go back with the fuzzy yarn and slip in all the front loops starting at the top or bottom and working your way around. Yes, you're essentially doing it twice, but trust me, it saves A LOT of headaches! Especially with toy shapes that tend to have a lot of increases and decreases.

I just started putting in a stitch marker at the last stitch in each row at both ends .it worked great for me straight edges on both sides .
Great idea!!I just can’t count every stitch, every row. Some days I don’t have the focus for it.
i love this idea, im currently working with fuzzy yarn for the first time, and the project keeps increasing on the sides bc i cant tell what im supposed to pick up or not

i made amigurumi for my bf, it wass frustrating but i enjoyed it. i used another thread, not fuzzy one to mark every chain you made, and remind you how many chain youve had so you don't lose count

I bought fuzzy yarn because I wanted to try working with it. But, then realized it was not easy at all😅 Takes triple the effort than normal yarn. And then I thought, maybe it's just me, maybe I wasn't doing it right.

Just used the Lion Brand Faux Fur in a project. Absolutely loved it!! It was softer than anything I've ever encountered... like crocheting with rabbit fur. Just amazing!!
I bought fluffy teddy yarn to edge around a babydoll blanket for my 3 yr old granddaughter. I was nervous to try it, but you've given me the confidence to use it today!
A light that goes around the neck and shines right where you need it is awesome. Getting one that has different settings is helpful too because then you can adjust to the environment you are working in.

I’ve purchased Hobby Lobby version Fur the Moment which is much softer then Lion Brand version. I found that I used a larger hook and simple single crochet. You are correct in saying any complicated stitch would be waste of time and lost in this yarn. I’ve made simple cowls from this and they came out beautifully. Selling quicker the I can make.
I didn't think anything could feel softer than the go for faux. I'll have to try it.
Thank you for the idea of using a smoother yarn with it. I have some feathery type yarn that I just couldn't do. Now I want to give it another try!

Thanks for these tips! The one about pairing with a smooth yarn is brilliant, I'll have to try that. I always put stitch markers in every single stitch on the row I'm working, I have a much easier time finding the V when I just made the stitch than later on when it's buried in other stitches haha!

i recommend crocheting loosely, this would help on making the stitches more visible
I found some Yarn Bee Snuggle Up on clearance at Hobby Lobby and thought I would give the fuzzy yarn a go. Didn’t even make it through a short chain until I was googling how to crochet with this stuff. Like other commenters here- I thought I just wasn’t good enough at crochet to do it.
I especially didn’t want to have to use a super huge hook. I figured out the best thing for my project was pairing the fuzzy yarn with a regular worsted weight yarn (tip #4). I was able to find an almost exact color match to the fuzzy yarn. It definitely has a different look to it than using the fuzzy yarn alone but I think it looks even better.

I almost bought some of this today. I want to make a stuffed animal for my granddaughter. I also thought about making her a poncho with the pink because that's her favorite color.
I used an eyelash yarns years ago and the only way I could knit with it was to pair it with a smooth yarn. Yes, this is a great tip!!!

I bought more fuzzy yarn for animal-inspired bucket hats! I can say it is hard to do but keeping patience and realizing that fuzzy/ more textured yarn is harder to deal with I think is big :D Trying not to blame yourself can be really hard as an artist so taking a step away, or maybe taking time to chill off I find can really help with more fuzzy yarns.

Autumn is fast approaching, and I’ve been wanting to make something but couldn’t decide on the yarn. You’re right, this is really hard to find. Lion didn’t have the color I wanted so I ordered one ball of another color to see if I like it. Some of the reviews said say it’s great but some of them say it sheds a whole lot. What’s your experience been with that?

I have bought a little LED headlamp that can be strapped to the head with a stretchy band, it is great for working in spaces where the lighting is low. I also use it for working with lace weight yarn, it gives a great and clear view of the stitches. Because it is on my forehead and the angle is adjustable it is perfectly aimed at my work. It is not lighting up a whole room when it's not necessary and it does not juggle like a lamp that is hanging around your neck for when you're on the treadmill. You will look a bit like a cartoon Minion, but hey... When you need to wear gear... you just do it 😎
I just ordered the Annie Hat kit from LB - was on sale. yeh! Got an extra skein so I could make some headbands. I'd love to see Lion come up with a pattern for a shawl collar (croissant-style) to wear over whatever - they always look so elegant!
Very good and educational. Any tips on connecting a new skein of yarn. My knots slip apart.
I’m gonna try and use some contrasting thread against the furry yarn to see if that helps. Kinda like your smooth yarn idea but won’t add texture and can remove after. Like a basting stitch in sewing.

Hi! I know I am a year late to this comment, but I just looked up “rose gold crochet hook” on amazon, and it’s about $80 US dollars. Personally I wouldn’t spend this much on a hook, but it’s of course your choice! I hope this helps! :)

Bunny yarn is ruff to work with. i knitted a small blanket with it. Turned out beautiful but some of the stitches ended up with big holes because I was to loose at times so i had to weave yarn through it to shrink the holes
Go for Faux is the yarn that made me search how to work with fluffy yarn. Finished my chain, turned, and realized I had no idea where to start my stitches.
My base chain keeps flipping around and I can't figure out how to keep it straight. In turn my stitches look like they're on a roller coaster track! I'm really struggling. All I keep doing is ripping it out to start over again! My husband thinks I'm nuts!

I have been trying to crochet a cat bed with chenille yarn in the round. I'm doing single crochet. It's very hard to see the stiches with bulky chenille yarn. So far I've made a bowl of sorts and a potato chip of sorts! lol! I'm getting better at "feeling" the yarn which is very helpful. Now I just need to practice my increases more so my round stays flat. Then I'll work on building the walls of the bed after I get the bottom of the cat bed flat. I must note that my cats don't care what shape the cat bed is. They love the chenille yarn and will pretty much lay on it no matter what shape I make. lol!

I just made a 16x16 pillow with my fuzzy yarn. Took a lot of patience but it was worth it. One side fuzzy the other side is plain.
I started working with Chenille and found that for me, keeping the tension on the crocheted part of the string, instead of the smooth feeding line... kind of like flipping it upside down, so that the feed line is loose and the already crocheted part is running through my fingers. I have also found out that unraveling it too much causes the fuzz to come off, causing a dip that catches, so I have to go slower, or risk getting snags. Also, working with my fingers or a bigger hook works. I actually cut half the clip off a sharpie lid and use the sharpie pen as a hook!🤣
Please explain? Do you put the sharpie lid ON your finger or on your hook?
@@morrisdancer11 Neither, When I first started crocheting, I was using the entire sharpie as a hook. I used it until I became better at crocheting, and using smaller hooks.

@@sierrastorm1291 I've tried a similar yarn with pom-poms and it was a disaster, the yarn sheds so much, that no matter the size the pom-pom falls to piece's.

Just an idea I've been toying with, but has anyone tried wetting the yarn down to make it smooth, work the yarn and then either let it air dry and fluff it or use a hair dryer on it? I'd love to make some Amigurumi critters out of this yarn but haven't had much luck tracking those pesky stitches.

How do you count your rounds? I easily forgot on what round I've worked on and usually repeatedly count my rounds.. however I am using a fleece like yarn and cannot see the rounds 😢
I would really like to have a pattern for that yarn to make scarves for Little and young girls.
So I’ve never tried anything like this before, but I want to make a giant cat plush that’s curled up. When I say giant I mean like ‘me size’ a somewhat average 15 yr old. I’m thinking that crocheting squares and attaching them together would make it easier for me🤔

Hi Linda! These hooks are Furls Odyssey in the rose gold and white version. Unfortunately, they aren't available for Tunisian crochet. My personal favorite Tunisian crochet hooks are the Addi interchangeable set. They have metal for the more common sizes and plastic for the larger sizes. The material is nice to work with and I prefer it over wooden hooks, myself. The downfall to this set is you have to buy three separate pieces to complete a functional set: the hook set (which comes with a case), the cords and stoppers. I bought all of these on Amazon. I think using as many stictch markers as you need I'd put a stitch marker in each stitch if needed

I bought fluffy,long fiber yarn for the blanket and tried to crochet and knit it to give go which way it is faster and easy to do. I dont know about you,but for me to knit it is much easy than crochet this kind of yarn: all your stitches are on the knitting needles and you can clearly see them. Because of that your sides are straight. You are able to count stitches and rows to increase or decrease if necessary. Knits very fast,because of size of needles and yarn. Happy knitting, girls!

being able to use a larger hook size also helps find the stitchplacement.
I just found this out: if you're sewing amigurumi fluffy pieces to other fluffy pieces, instead of using the tail of the fluffy piece it's much easier to sew when you attach smooth yarn and use that to sew it together instead. That way the fluff won't come apart and all you're left with is loose string!

I use stitch markers to mark EVERY stitch, it's a pain in the butt but it takes out the counting in some areas or just easier and you won't lose your stitches, lol

It gets easier the longer you work with it! I'm currently knitting the last piece of a faux fur pullover and it's a piece of cake!
