    It is very difficult to write a family history book. I wrote one about a select few ancestors during a little-known part of Texas history. Took.... for...... ever!!!! It was fun. But lord it was hard.

    This seems like a very good way to preserve memories of loved ones that are held by those who have never taken the time to write down their accounts. The point of a family history book, in contrast, is presumably to preserve more than just the memories of those who are still alive, but also information from artifacts (photos, newspaper clippings, census records, church records) that require an interpretive framework to make sense of them. I see the writing of a family history book as a way to collect and condense the information I have collected that currently fills a room of my house into an electronic form that hopefully will be shared among those who value it, and a hedge against the possibility that whoever inherits my physical possessions will simply pitch the stuff because they have neither the time nor the patience to find someone else who is willing to store these items in their homes.

      I think that's a good way to look at it, and the Zoom call type recordings can easily feed into a book later on. Best of luck with your research!

    Great idea, but. Yep, there is always a but 😁. I've been researching my family for about 15 years, right back to 1560, I've just reached "remembered time". the one thing i've noticed is many of the things i'm told are wrong. verbal history is like Chinese whispers. the facts get distorted every time it's told until the story you hear is totally wrong 😥. i've found the best source of information are family albums/photos. they tend to be, jernolled at the time of creation so the facts are new and accurate you can also get so much more info from the picture it self. just my opinion good luck with your project 👍👍

    I think this is a great idea and definitely better to do this, than nothing, as, writing a book can be very daunting, time consuming and all to easy to put off until maybe it’s too late!
    I think a nice way to start, especially with older folk, is with some old photos. Get them to tell you who the people are and what memories they have and then during the editing, you can editing the video to include the photos they’re talking about ☺️

      Great tip about the photos, Lorraine - that is actually something I had been doing but didn't mention here. Let us know how you get on with this or the book writing approach!

    I’ve enjoyed your previous posts but I have to disagree with you on this one. I’m a photographer and have discovered that people like looking at and reading books. It is something tangible. By all means record what people are telling you. When you’re dead and gone your children and grandchildren won’t be looking at your computer on online. They will, however, look through your stuff and I guarantee they will read your book.

      That is a fair point and something I am starting to see. Perhaps my thinking now is more that starting with a book is not the way to go, as trying to capture it all that way, I feel, is a more overwhelming way to do it. Thanks for the perspective👍

    Hey Steve, interesting comments. I think you're onto something. Books are awesome but they world is changing and people are wanting more. I'd rather have a video interview with my great grandparents. Are you still making videos. I hope you continue.

      Hi Todd. Thanks for this. I have had to pause the video making for now for personal reasons but hope to get back to it in the near future! Any topics you'd like me to cover, just ask! All the best, Steve.

    If you are just making a history book which says who is related to who...I think its quite fun! Its always good to have a digital and analog record.

      Fair enough - I was thinking more about a massive tome but that kind of book sounds interesting. Any tips on doing that and keeping it simple?

      @@familycurious3813 Just stick with family names, dates of birth, and location of birth. Use bullet points and provide pictures.

    Interesting. I have tried to get people to go on video but many of the older generation seem to prefer phone. There is ways to record phone calls. I like your idea. I am considering taking my family history and turning it into a youtube video series about Jews that escaped the Holocaust and what happened to their families and how it affected the mental and physical health of the descendants. LOL! I don't know if I"ll ever do it because it's similar to the concept of writing a book.

    • @familycurious3813
      @familycurious3813  Před 3 lety +1

      I know what you mean about video; I've had a couple of relatives express a preference for phone, which was fine - I ended up just recording the phone through my microphone but have used recording apps in the past. As for your idea, that sounds very interesting and I'll be subscribing in the hope that you do publish that kind of content. I think if you keep it simple and chunk it down into bitesize bits you will find it much easier that way, rather than thinking of it as some kind of magnum opus. The analogy I think of is that of doing sketches before a big painting - just practice with the bitesize bits and then see where you're at. You could easily write a book of the content from the videos, or from blog posts on said topic. Looking forward to see what you do! Cheers, Steve.
