This song was playing when I found out my mom was dying. I didn't get home in time to see her before she left us. I still can't hear this song without breaking down
I was at the age of 14 back in 2000, living in a one-horse-town in my home country, Brazil. One night, I was watching tv and, during the break of the sopa opera, an advert for a collection of 1970's music flashed on the screen. I couldn't care less about that old people's music. I was a teenager who hadn't even been around until 1986. Only, one of those songs caught my ears. I looked at the screen and saw a bespectacled, strange looking fellow. His glasses were huge! His voice got into my years and I felt something so good inside. I waited for the commercial to appear on the screen again, so that I could discover who sang that song and its title. I had to read it quickly! Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John. Cut the long story short, I asked my mom where Elton John's vinyl, which she'd bought to me several months prior was. I hadn't given it too much thought because it didn't have The Lion King songs on it. I looked for that LP for a few days until I finally found it on a sunny Saturday afternoon. I rushed to the record player, eager to listen to the song whose chorus had enchanted me from the word go. I will never forget the moment I heard Elton getting to "The bluuues..." and the band heavenly singing "Aaaaaaa", while the drums sound sort of ripped my heart. I felt like being taken to another dimension. Seriously! As they say, the rest is history. I've been a die-hard fan since then.
That is one of the best true stories I ever heard coming from a music lover. I've seen Sir Elton 3 times- he's my Sister's favorite performer. 😊❤ Love, from N.Y.S.

Elton John would not be who he is today without Bernie Taupin, the incredibly gifted songwriter who penned most of the lyrics of his songs. Elton's moving, complex, beautiful compositions and fantastic showmanship made for some glorious music. I was at this concert and it changed me. I will never forget it.
I disagree, not because Taupin isn't a great lyricist, he is. The first thing that gets your attention in a song is not the lyrics, but the melody, the tune. If it's a great melodic and rhythmical sound, it's catchy and sticks in your mind, then you will hum that tune all day and then maybe dig deeper into the words of the song. Just my opinion.
@@aviatorpianokraft you also need to recognize the people that were involved in the production, mixing, arrangement, etc. A great player or great singer is simply just that but without Bernie and the other crazy talented people that worked with Elton we would not have the personification of beauty that some of his biggest hits present. Yes he used his voice to great effect when he had his original range. He purposefully slowed down his own vocal and sang on top of the melody to give the song that dreamy melodic sound.
When I was about 6-7 years old this song was played on the radio and tv in Greece. It sounded as an amazing bitter sweet melody to my ears without of knowledge of English language. @@Andrew11017 No. That song, according to Bernie, was about a US Vietnam soldier returning to home, in Texas. He read about him in an article in Newsweek. In his lyrics he used "Spain" since it was easier to rhyme with than Vietnam. The last verse explained it a bit more, but Elton cut it out (Bernie doesn't seem to care that he did). Great song! But probably not a fit in a movie about Elton John's life.

Boa, Wagner! Keep playing his timeless songs.

This is a great song. I'm a one man band on youtube.
i love these freaking vocals
Voice of a lifetime
screw autotune. Who needs it when you got Elton?
Yes he used his voice to great effect when he had his original range. He purposefully slowed down his own vocal and sang on top of the melody to give the song that dreamy melodic sound.
ARMY!!! I SEE TAE
This one is not live. But still,he had amazing vocals.
When I was about 6-7 years old this song was played on the radio and tv in Greece. It sounded as an amazing bitter sweet melody to my ears without of knowledge of English language. I think that it was the choice for the last song to play Elton John to close his career on the stage . Its one of the best ever pop ballads.
My Mother passed March 23. This dong played over and over. Helping me get through it. Never been a EJ fan. Thanks
I was 12 when this song hit the charts. I am now 60 and have it on venyl and CD.
Time flies
@@ddsforever1 yip. You only realise that in your golden age. Just yesterday I was a teenager, now I am an old age pensioner. Damn, my adult kids would crucify me for being posting on U-tube 🤣🤣🤣
Me too, was 12 when it hit the charts, funny I always knew what it was about even at 12. Best libe for me where the dogs of society howl.
One of my favorite Elton John songs. I love finding these old videos.
Kevin Miller
The outfit he rocks is so crazy and true rock n roll
And now it’s extra old
True, it is Elton John's best song of his career.
I was 9 years old when this came out, -- far too young to appreciate what a masterpiece of songwriting this gem is.
I was 6! So many memories!
I'm 30 when i discovered this
This is probably Elton's greatest album of all time. The song is just brilliant as well.

When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing, the blues
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
What do you think you'll do then?
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
Who comes up with lyrics like that? Bernie pen through Eltons lips. The stuff legends are made of.
Thanks
Gracias por la letra. Asi puedo cantar, mal pero igual
You are amazing.
Thanks for putting the lyrics, I bet it took time huh?
This Amazing song, was one of my favourite, in my youth. Now I'm 63 and I still love it!🥰

A good melody has that ability to mask weird (though meaningful) lyrics. Awesome song.

Fr this song makes me cry
One of the greatest pop songs ever written. I was only a boy of eleven and had no idea of what the song meant, but it was haunting and memorable and I would find myself thinking about it when I wasn’t listening to it. A true classic😊👍🏻
I just love his song❤
I'm here from the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania trailer for this CLASSIC SONG! I'm glad that a new generation is being introduced to this masterpiece!

Beautiful movie, I’ve heard these songs before but now I’m listening.

jhova187 I think anyone who has seen this movie is listening now....my ears and heart are fully open xo
Plenty of arguments for this being the greatest song ever written and performed
I love Elton John! Just saw Rocketman!!!!! Saw it 2X

Also seen it twice its incredible
DYs gone by, my friend.
Amazing film.
Crazy how I am
35 and not until watching “rocket man” this song has a whole new meaning to it
Happened with every song in the movie; like it became a completely new song. It was mind-blowing.
Was thinking about watching it and was wondering do they incorporate Daniels story into the movie?
I am 13 i love him
@@Andrew11017 No. Great song! But probably not a fit in a movie about Elton John's life.
tinmania yeah I figured after I found our Elton didn’t write his own songs. I always thought that song was Written by Elton about his actual brother I was surprised when I found our it wasnt and he doesn’t write his own music
GREATEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME, RIDING AROUND N MY 65 GTO, WITH THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD 8 TRACK
His best work was in the 70s for sure. I'm a total rock n roll girl but I love Elton John from the 70s.
This song is a life saver. Everyone always says "Why don't you listen to modern music?" well i hate modern music. People say i have an old soul so i want to stay that way
There's no way you can hate all modern music. But yeah, it's good to listen to the classics.
@Queenie104 Frank sinatra is about as normal music as you can find
I don’t think you’re giving mumble rap a chance...
Queenie104 ahh... I wasn’t replying to you but to OP. Also, was being facetious... :)
sorry but this is too modern music for me
This song stands up so well today, a timeless song written by a true genius 👍
Elton was an amazingly good singer in his youth (in addition to his other super gifts for composition and piano). A huge talent unlike many of today's so called stars.

I was a sophomore in high school when this was released. Being born in the late 50s, I feel like I was born at the right time for all the best music ever created.
I love this song and grew up with listening to all of Eltons music, but only a couple weeks ago truly listened to all the lyrics, which made me feel he went through things not good...Truly listen to what he is saying....
This is my favorite Elton John songs. Brings back great memories of a simpler time in my life.

An incredible song from the legend Elton John a timeless classic thanks Elton
I cant believe that a song this f*cking beautiful was made so long ago, his voice just hits the best part of your heart and soul and I love how this song gives a cinematic vibe to it
The 1970s were a golden era for music along with the 50's and the 60's.
The Deep eating Chips was priceless
I cry before he even asks 'when are you gonna come down..." Yep, cry even before he sings.
Parabéns Elton John sou teu fã e curto a muitos anos tuas músicas inesquecíveis estão no coracao da gente
I rewatched Rocket man yesterday and this song just hit me in the gut. So strong ❤
