  • In todays video we convert an old-school road bike from 27" wheels to 700c, cold set the frame to accept the new 700c wheels, and install a used 9 speed Ultegra Group-Set. Enjoy!

The PARK TOOL FFG-2 Frame Alignment tool shown @4:43 costs $100 alone.

Thanks! I'll put that on my list of tools to pick up the next time I plan on doing one of these. Thanks for watching!
Edit: I thought you were talking about the frame alignment tool:
PARK TOOL FAG-2 FRAME ALIGNMENT GAUGE
I normally don't count the costs of tools in my builds, and I think I picked these up on sale a few months back. Again thanks for watching.

such a great video and a great bicycle it turned out! recently got an old Kharkiv bicycle and would love to know what kind of instruments did you use for the rear dropout spacing adjustments? mine are narrow and i wouldn't say ideally symmetrical so i'd be down to fix it on my own. thanks in advance!

The drop-out alignment tool I used is: Park Tool Frame and Fork End Alignment Gauge Set. If you have a bike Coop in your area you might be able to borrow or have them help you with the alignment.
"JR the Bike Guy" has an awesome video on how to cold-set a frame. Video linked here:

Very nice. I've noticed more and more Ultegra/105 groupsets appearing on eBay/marketplace as folks upgrade to electronic shifting which is good for us restomodders.❤️👍

Electronic shifting is neato but I think unnecessary along with carbon.

@@steelisreal4313 agree - I'm a materials engineer and work a lot with carbon fibre in civil engineering projects. I would never buy a carbon fibre frame - the weakest point is where the seat stays join to the seat tube and that is where they inevitably break - witness the TdF two years back. I have bikes with carbon forks that I got used and they were already on the bike - oh well - we'll see. I much prefer steel - Reynolds 853 is my preferred material followed by 531. (High strength - cheap easy to weld). Just cannot afford Titanium alloy frames - I worked with Ti-6Al-4V for years for Rolls Royce Jet engines and I think it's the best material out there but way too expensive for bicycle frames and difficult to weld. For frames - high strength and toughness are important - gets the tube wall thickness down. All steels have the same elastic modulus (stiffness) - tube stiffness is controlled by diameter, material and then wall thickness. It's why there is almost no weight difference between steel, aluminium and titanium frames.

What's going on with the front brake? Looks like it's not re-centering. Did you have to do something to get it to work right?

    • @TheValueBikeAdvocate

There is a special tool that I don’t have that can help get them centered. With side pull breaks one side can come in contact with the wheel before the other. It doesn’t seem to rub while riding. Thanks for watching!!

Great build! Those old bikes can rip. Did a similar rebuild and conversion on an old Schwinn Prelude and had no trouble keeping up or even ahead on fast group rides.

So you are saying I could save tons of money by buying a bunch of bike tools, bike stand, and other random stuff? Then I spend the time to learn how to be a bike mechanic, for me that would take awhile. Then I spend the hours upon hours refurbishing the old bike. Hours more trying to figure out the mistakes I made. Then a few hundred dollars(min) to take to a bike shop and have them do it for me. This whole guide is predicated on me being a bike mechanic which I am not. The amount of time I would have to spend doing this is not at all worth it. Just go buy a new bike from Canyon or one of the other many good values.
Not to mention that the new tech in new bikes is absolutely worth it.

@@TheValueBikeAdvocate You misunderstood me. I am handy with bikes. You are suggesting instead of buying a new bike find a vintage one and spend hours and hours refurbishing it and that will be a much better value. Being "handy" as you say isn't the same as your skill level. You are a professional mechanic. Even if it was just buying a new bike compared to what you did here a new bike is always going to be more valuable. New tech is so much better. From the group sets to wheels to....everything. I know, without watching anything else you ever put out into the youtube world, you ride a modern bike.

    • @TheValueBikeAdvocate
      @TheValueBikeAdvocate  Před 3 měsíci

I understand what you are saying. I was trying to find a clever way to title and showcase my video. I'm not suggesting that everyone should find a vintage bike and spend hours fixing it up instead of buying new. Its just one option that I choose to do for this project. For the type of riding I do, finding these old bikes and fixing them up is perfect for me.
Thank you for thinking I'm a professional mechanic, I just play one on CZcams, and enjoy the rebuild process. Everything I've learned is from watching CZcams videos.
Again, thanks for watching and engaging with me and my community.

"Who needs a fast carbon bike? Save a ton of money by slapping cheap wheels on a mediocre bike!" yeah bro I don't think you understand the meaning of "saving". You can always just ride a shitty bike instead of spending your money. We all know that. We don't need you to tell us
