    Really good, excellent way to show how the basal ganglia work; only, the projections between the basal ganglia and the thalamus aren't inhibitory neurons? so actually the direct pathway leads to an inhibition of those neurons, leading to increased thalamic activation; whilst the indirect pathway gives an excitatory feedback to the same projections, activating the inhibitory neurons and reducing thalamic neutrons activation and halting movement?

How do scientists scan the living human body to find out how all these intricate chemical pathways work? Thanks so much!

  • @hakaromer
    @hakaromer Před 3 měsíci

    there are some misconceptions actually!!
    dr.mike when signals are sent from the Globus palidus internus (GPi) to the thalamus is to carry an inhibitory message to the thalamus and GPi is involved in the indirect pathway whereas the GPe is involved in the direct pathway by releasing GABA on subthalamic nucleus to inhibits it as the function of subthalamic nucleus is to activate the GPi which is involved in the indirect pathway!!

    😭Gosh this feels very scary to me, as somebody with movement disorder..
    I was given Maxolon aka reglan and it affected my basal ganglia.. TD parkinsonism stiffness cramps spasm and tics. It can happen from a dopamine suppressor. When I went to the neurologist, I asked if this could be the reason our two youngest children have tourettes. Taking anti-nausea dopamine suppressor during pregnancy. His answer was, most likely but more study needs to be done.. if this truly is the case,
    This kind of study is always worth more government grants. Please be careful of dopamine and serotonin suppressor medications during pregnancy. PubMed has hundreds of studies in this area. Also encouraging Professionals to join one or two support groups in the area they specialise in. Often very beneficial on both sides, to be a fly on the wall. I'm saying all of this because parkinsonism means drug-induced Parkinson's and we have to start paying attention to labels like environmental factors. We rely on you guys, Not to encourage medications that will make our movement disorder worse. If it says may or may not make it the condition worse, it really needs to be explained properly.
    I encourage everybody to listen to the pharmacists when they are explaining prescription medications
    If your prescriptions instructs you to wean off the medication and never go cold turkey. Please always pay attention to that..
    This is such a huge subject on both sides full stop and three huge keywords in the upload title thank you
