Toyota just gave the GR86 a performance refresh. What are the changes and what can we expect from a next-generation?
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) announced today that it has upgraded the GR86 for improved turning performance and easier upper-limit handling, deepening the unique driving feel of a GR vehicle. Orders are now being accepted by Toyota vehicle dealers across Japan, with sales set to launch on August 1. TGR also announced today the start of a purchasing lottery that runs to July 28 for the RZ "Ridge Green Limited", a limited special-edition model that augments the GR86's exterior color lineup with the newly added color Ridge Green and sports exclusive bronze wheels and exclusive interior embroidery. Limited sales of 200 units are to start from around October.

Making 86 a four door with turbo engine is against the formula. It won't be an 86 anymore
All it needs is to rev higher and sound better and people would shut up. I agree though. A turbo goes against the philosophy of this car
It's GR172!
â@@omarawilson2853isn't the limit like 8k? A tad more would be cool tho
@@1Solace itâs 7,400. If I was 8 or 8.5 Iâm sure thatâs all it would need honestly
@@omarawilson2853 8.5 would be delectable
Love that green color. Bring back more green cars!
Bring back the 10 -15 paint color choices that used to be common for most cars.
Maybe as an upgrade for 2025 they could give the GR86 stable oil pressure regardless of which direction you're turning and without having to overfill.
right this is a ridiculous problem and preventing me from purchasing one.
Oh cool, the color combo we have wanted to come back to the Miata for years....on a different competitor yet again. đ
I would not be opposed to renaming the 86 to "Celica" and making the coupe the "86 Trim" with a 4-door and wagon trim.
If they made it only into 4 door wagon I would vomit though. That red rendering at the end has the silhouette of a Honda Accord. No thanks.
That wouldn't make much sense. This is still a Subaru, and the Celica was never 4dr or wagon.
no
That would be a Corolla. Badging it as a Celica is silly. I could see them doing a hatchback 4 door version of the 86, but why? Maybe just to sell more cars, but it wouldn't land well IMO
Celica was always a FWD platform expect for the GT-FOUR version which had AWD.
I absolutely love my 2024 BRZ; I have zero regrets ordering it âŁïž
love my 86 but would love them to get a toyota engine in the future
V6 lol that would be nice and no weight increase lol
I love engines but weâre unsure if we can keep our beloved engines moving forward and for how longâŠâŠ.only time will tell.
Yeah, theyâre never gonna give that 350 hp..lol
If they put the GR corolla 1.6 inline 3 in it, that would be enough power.
@@bobbyjones2112
Car âenthusiastsâ like you are never satisfied, no matter how much hp/tq a car has đ
Id be happy with like 280-300, its a light car
prob trying to keep it affordable
At this point I would like all the car companies to give us a great chassis with a lawnmower engine so we can just swap it out. Everything is disappointing now.
Amazing videos you make đȘ
Kirk, If you want a GR 86 Shooting Brake then you are welcome to get in line BEHIND me. đ If we really want the GR 86 wagon to come to market then we should take the strategic approach of calling it the 'GR 86 SUV'. After all, everyone wants a SUV but nobody wants a wagon. đ
Isnât it that the Toyota 86 used to have a Shooting Brake concept back then?
I really like the current 86 with the Subaru engine. Itâs like a baby Porsche. And the 86/BRZ platform is a special platform containing a lot of SGP technology with some TNGA technology. If the new 86 is not developed by Subaru, Iâd be disappointed. And 4-door is unacceptable for a 86.
Engine goes boom
@@El_Tony_CTheyâre too hated.
If they could get the GR86 up to at least 250 lbft of torque they would really have something. About 285 Hp and 250 torque would make it a really competetive sports car. Shaving a second off the six second 0-60 would make a dramatic difference
That 1.5t tuned. Would do it.
But if they put a 2.0t in it they just rake cash
Would y'all be interested in GR Sienna?
Only 200 units in green is too much of a tease
Thatâs only for Japan. For the US market (which Iâm not sure if that includes Canada?), theyâre making 860.
PS Kirk you look like a chef, lol.
Gosh⊠I agree unless Toyota do something very different with the 86 like these 4 doors version I donât see a place in the future lineup with the Celica. Theyâll have there different characteristics one being AWD and the other RWD so works there and if Toyota keep the 86 as a more affordable version but with all the body styles⊠if they can have both, I wonât be complaining though. Wondering if the Celica would have both the 1.5 and 2.0 turbos, similarly the MR2
should I wait for 2025 model to come or should I just purchase a 2024 model right now?
The twins are amazing for me the formula is perfect for having fun on the streets. Not all of us can access a track where more speed is allowed. Sub 3000 lbs over 200hp 3 pedals & RWD are the stats I cherish. You can put foot to the floor and not be flung off the road and have a moment to enjoy getting to 60. If under 4 seconds you canât really enjoy accelerating before you get to speed limit.
This is my 1st car that Iâd definitely buy another if anything happens
I want a shooting brake but theyâd never bring it here in the Middle East
RIP Neptune 86
"newly available" tpms warning system ffs maybe you shouldn't have taken that away in the first place. I missed this feature so much going from 2013 to a 2017.
Nice
A 4 door would be cool.
Very cool to see, glad we're getting another "hakone". I do hope they at least don't make the 86 throttle curve worse, because it's already hilariously bad. From the research I've done and friends I've spoken to, you're getting 100% acceleration at under 50% throttle input, making any input past halfway effectively worthless. The BRZ does not have this issue and is much more natural and linear, so it's clearly just something tuned in to make the 86 seem faster.
Reading between the lines it seems Toyota is making the throttle more linear like the BRZ's.
@@bearclaw5115 ah, I just reread it and I see what you might be looking at. "direct" being a key word. That would definitely be a welcome change. Interesting that it's only listed under the manual section, though. I guess we'll see
Is the hat reliable tho?
All I see on that cover is "something, something MAZDA6"....
What about the automatic GR Corolla
I wonder if the RPM range limit for the autos would be a simple software update for older models. That would be nice.
The 86 redesigned with the 3 cylinder engine with manual transmission is all we ask for
My guess is that the SFR Miata fighter is going to be the affordable car.
I havenât watched this video yet. I just started watching it, and I hope you got some damn good news or Iâll be pissedâŠlolđ
Give me a stick and this is my next weekend coffee hauler.
This is the car that Porsche should offer the world. Porsche has. Forgotten its roots in the Porsche 356. Not even 100 horsepower in the early models.
They should offer a starter car . A car with 150 to 200 horsepower, that is fun to drive. I owned a BMW 1600. It was no ball of fire but still fun.
It is not an impossible idea. To many Porsche has become an impossible idea. So what has happened it is out of the mind of young men. So what do
they buy but a butt ugly truck that can handle.
I could easily see the gr carolla motor in the gr86
How? Boxer engine what makes it handle unbelievable now.
Nissan needs to bring back the 240
literally announced it on toyotausa page...Also, 40k doesn't sound that bad these days. This isn't 2010 anymore (14 years ago). Average cop in my area earns 150k and public hs teacher is 100k+ too. Now does everyone need a new car? No. And it financially makes no sense either. Monthly transit passes are often below $100/month.
Where tf you live?? đđ
@@dsledgend California. High cost of living, but high salary.
I'd be all in with a wagon!
make warning indicator when pick up tube has rtv
Just stick to the tried-and-tested formula. Do you think a BEV will work out? Solid-state batteries is the key.
Fav color. If i wasn t living in stupid belgium i would want it!
is there gonna be an automatic for this ?
I want one. â€
Kirk, Do You think Toyota will give US đșđČđšđŠ The Green đ exterior for the Celica??
Give usa đșđž the GR hakonen edition we need this â€
toyota really scamming everyone making the same slow pos car thats decent on a track, charging damn near $40kđ
they fixed the automatic issue is actually great
Big Mac please and please cover your beard.đđđ
Love the 86. I really wish it had a more lively sounding engine though
Limited edition models started with the Scion brand, but they continue today with the 86/GR86
I foresee next gen 86 being significantly more expensive. Iâm glad Iâm getting my 86 now. Enjoy it before they mess it up
Still own a 2014 White BRZ from new and think its the best iteration being much lighter and having better steering feel.
I used to have one, the torque dip in the first gen is atrocious. They improved pretty much everything
Also, it's 50 pounds heavier. Much lighter is crazy work
It window dressing is it worth the money
I'm going to call it the GR86 Master Chief Edition
The new Hakone Edition color is different than the previous gen one. This oneâs called Ridge Green, the other was British Racing Green (& it unfortunately doesnât look as good, so far).
True. The new paint is darker and flat. I miss the metallic. Still cool though.
Agreed
The last paint they used popped more
The ad they promoted the 2024 in looked flat and dull
i have original FRS. it's a great car, not perfect, but it's a great track car. for me, it's time to move on to my next sports car. im considering nissan 400z or the new upcoming Celica. im now looking for a GT car, not a race track sports car like the 86.
Hakone edition is coming, Toyota teased it on its website.
86 was already a Corolla hot hatch, so maybe, just maybe the next Corolla will regain it's FR
And this will leave the space for the return of Celica and MR
To be honest, I don't mind the 4 door over the coupe, as it's going to be cheaper to insure, olus the possibility of a wagon version is cool as well as we haven't seen sporty estate cars in years, aside from Audi anyway.
Will the 86 turn into the Celica, Supra gets discontinued and the Mr2 comes as the higher end sports car. Then the SFR comes in as the affordable Toyota Miata
The 2020 Hakone couldnât be optioned with the Brembo brakes, I only know this bc this was the one combination I entertained tight after buying the TRD 86 đ
We need more sport engine choices for gr86. Super chargers Inline 4, subaru boxer, and 1.3 3cyclinder turbos.
Modifications sound similar to the Mazda mx5 nd3 tweaks theyâve made for more intelligent lsd when shifting and/or entering & exiting turns.
They wouldn't need celica or mr2 if this has 300hp engine.
It would basically be the FX16 REVIVAL!
If the brought in a 3 door hatch model as well as the coupe for the next generation, we could very well have another Levin and Trueno situation on hands. Iâd be disappointed in a turbo tho, much rather prefer a 8k rpm or capable NA engine for the next generation car
I like the GR86.
Basically a supra minus the high price, and 220hp with the weight ect is quite good still. You'll be smoking most cars still.
And with a little tune that thing can prob push 235-240 without any issues.
everyone is overthinking this just like they did last time. itâs going to be less is more, at an affordable price. the market is way too small.
GR86 wagon?! Take my money now!
*I'm constipated*
The gr86 being a wagon is like
I wanna shoot myself in the head rn. Basically pulling a ford on the mustang
86 with 1.6T/hybrid would be so good. Donât see it happening.
The 86 definitely needs better colors. Silver and dark grey?? Ugh. Iâd love to see one in the Supra yellow and a British racing green like this one. The Hakone edition of old was beautiful.
Just want to add that those renders make the future 86 look waaaaay too much like a hyundai Kona.I really don't see Toyota going that diretion stylistically at all.
I wont consider one of these until they put the 1.6t in it. I don't want nor trust the boxer in it right now.
Next 86 (need to stay close to current price) could use new 1.5T (around 250hp), Celica (similar price to gr corolla) will use 1.6GTE, MR2 ($50k+) will get the top 2.0T (350hp+)
86 should stay N/A with a high revving linear engine. But Toyota doesnât have one in their lineup. Itâd be cool if they converted their new 2.0T to NA and had a GE version specifically for the 86. But thatâs wishful thinking lol
it needs to still be affordable so thats why it could get the 1.5 if theyre going to keep in the toyota family and i think they want a smaller engine. they could use a detuned 1.6 too
@@tinhinnh I get what you mean but a turbo just doesnât meld with the whole ethos of the car. Also I could be wrong but isnât their new 1.5T not really performance car oriented? Wouldnât they have to do a pretty big design overhaul to make that engine a viable candidate for the 86?
I guess the same could be said if they decided to use the 2.0 engine in NA form, but it wouldnât surprise me if they already have an NA GE variant of that engine ready to go, as Toyota has done similar in the past. They have been developing this 2.0L for several years so a variant without a turbo could be very likely.
@@omarawilson2853theres already a 2.0 but it doesnt make much power, i think the 1.5t might be replacing the 2.5
86 needs only 2 doors & a liftback. Make it a toyota z4 hardtop & toyota is on top!
Gr86 needs 360 hp engine and reliability. Fix the fan venting in the gr86. AC system is always on
Just put the 2.0t in it and rake in the money
Just watch.. all those improvements.. probably be negligible for the daily driver lol. Unless you're taking it to the track going max out, you probably won't feel a difference between the 22-24's vs the new 25's.
Canât wait to get the boxer out of the 86
Or the Mazda Miata?
No turbo? No want it! Mo Powa Baby!!
yo that converts to like $21000
A GR 86 four door wagon is acceptable and cool. A four door sedan GR 86 would be stupid af.
id take the wagon in a heart beat tik tok ruined the brz/86 name for me but if it comes in a wagon then fuck yeah im down
they better not jack everything (86, celica, mr2) up like Honda always does with their goofy ideas.
Silicone gasket issues
If it was actually Toyota Iâd be more attracted to this car, I canât bring myself to finance a Subaru
Family four door sport car
I think a hybrid no manual wagon 86 is stupid. And it wouldnât be the kind of 86 I would want
I can read.
Turbocharge it and bump it to decent power.
A Toyota engine would be an upgrade...
Dinosaur,
Last gasp....
Updated GR 86 is better than ever and very much a class leader. importantly miles better than the MX5.đđ. Upcoming gr86 becoming a 4 door sports sedan and wagon is very cool . I know some will be upset but Its ok.
kirk. upcoming prelude is just going to be a coupe version of the civic hybrid. So its nothing special
None of those "upgrades" mean much, and if you are a track guy, shocks are going in the trash anyway. I bet in a blind "taste test" between the new and "old" you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. Time to retire this car and replace it with at turbo 4 "Celica" based on the IS chassis.
They need a new engine thatâs all
I want the 2025 gr86 to have a hybrid engine with extra focus on paddle shifters with about 250 hp. More storage space in the trunk. And simple steel wheels like the ones in old porsches and simple cloth seats, and decent sound system. If itâs 4 doors, even better. It has the potential to be the most affordable fun car to drive daily, even during rush hours with slow moving traffic. 35-45 mpg. $25000 base model msrp. Loving the 4dr design in that magazine picture.
Sounds like you would like the new Elantra N with the 8-speed DCT transmission. It's FWD but still a fun, usable car. Not the most reliable because of Hyundai
I would be seriously unhappy to see the 86 become a 4door sedan, i really hope they don't
Oh tim . There is nothing wrong with the Gr86 becoming a m3 or charger sports sedan style vehicle if anything it's going to sell better
@@Mylifeislegendary982. Lol everything is wrong with it. It's for cool people who like cool things and this is not the car for Mr loser mcjerkoff who wants to tote around his family
ââ@@LongTim- đđ. Vehicles like the M5 RS6 M3 CHARGER and more are world class performance vehicles that is better than many two door vehicles. If anything it's a very good thing Toyota has a proper sports sedan to rival something like a m3. Don't worry for single people like you will have other two door options From Toyota đ.most silly comment ever đ
