My thing was if you're not on time for no good reason, don't bother showing up at all. His lost day's pay was split between the guys, as a bonus for the extra work they had to do especially when closing in a roof. Sometimes we had too put the foot down to get the point over otherwise they'll try too take advantage of the situation. It was always the new guys. They learned. Roofing and windows were our main moneymakers, not siding. The siding took too long. I miss it but I don't miss it. That's a nice job you have there, later......

If you line the ground with smaller 8x10 tarps on top of the larger ones,2 or 3 guys can pick the whole tarp up as opposed to wheel barrels or garbage cans or picking them up twice.An 8x10 will hold a square or so without tearing and makes clean up a breeze.Finding good guys is my biggest problem,The struggle is real no doubt.
wow, how did that never cross my mind! advice taken bud! we usually just use the big ones because we almost NEVER let anything hit the ground. but there was too much real estate to walk on this one. but yea good guys are the hardest thing to find. everybody good is drug attics/alcoholics and don't have a license or vehicle. I teach the young new guys now, that way they just learn my way and they don't bring the hack ass shit from their last company to mine. that's what inspired me to make this channel. I got tired of teaching the same thing to guys that don't stick around. so now I can tell them to familiarize with a video (i.e before we start siding or before I let them shingle for the first time) and also, I want other guys like you to be able to tell your guys "hey, go watch this specific video before we jump into that tomorrow, I do things a little different but at least you're not coming into it blindy"
They let their mind be their body up. A good motto to live by and to help you not let self doubt stop them from doing whatever a person has set out to do. With that being said, you do not want someone on a job site who is afraid of performing the job. A good manager, supervisor, boss would take a moment to talk with them one on one and offer to take them up on the roof and work side by side with them for an hour to help them build their confidence. Show them how to work safely in a dangerous environment. I know time is money and it may seem like you do not have the time to teach someone or to help build the confidence and skills to do the job at hand. But if you take the time, teach them, show them, work with them for a few hours to see if they can grasp the task at hand and perform it to the level you expect you just might have an employee who will come back tomorrow. Just saying is all
I was taught to always start from the bottom, scrape from the corner , and work my way up. After all the shingles come off then use a flat bar to tear off the old felt, and then flashing and pull nails. Really cool to see the way you do it
uh i believe someone was messing with you when they taught you to tear off from the bottom . makes as much sense as roofing it from the top down .
You can remove way more square from the bottom up,only draw back is you have to come back through and pull nails with a shingle shovel

stand below the shingles you are stripping, strip 2 or 3 at a time make neat piles and work down the stair. after you come back and pick up piles and throw them right in the trailer or bin whatever you have. nice and neat then you dont have to clean everything off the ground.
they slide right off so we just let them anyway. its a 7. lil bit hard to do it that way, that's why i was shaking my head in the beginning. it was goin terribly

110 Square. Wow that's a really big roof. I will never forget the roofing company that I work for about a year or two ago we had to do at least a 140 square tear off and put on with shingles. It was a giant very steep church roof. It took us like 5 or 6 days to get it all done. It sure was a lot of garbage to pick up on the ground. But luckily though there was a couple of extra guys that the boss told them to help me pick up the trash.
My favorite tear off tall is a razorback shovel.
I’ve used the other shovel thing with the teeth but I do not like it. Everyone has their way that works better for them. Love your videos keep it up

I like going 3 or 4 rows billow the ridge and going up with the ' shovel and moving left or right for like 8-10 ft then grab by hand most of the time you can get some big chunks like that depending on how many layers and how good they nailed it for 1 layer usually works good but not always the case but what ever gets the job done
to each their own. i'd like to see more ways demonstrated myself...I switch between these 4 methods and haven't found anything else that's even close to being as efficient
My husband's an old time roofer and he used to slice the length of the roof about every 3 ft and then roll it all up into a big roll which pulls 90% of the nails and all the paper as you go and just drop the roll into the back of the truck.
With a saw? Like cutting through the shingles but not the plywood?
@@NWIVeteranConstruction no just a composition ax one with a small razor blade attached to it. One from the '60s, he still has a couple. They have wooden handles. I think they're called "Plum". The makers I suppose.?

you should try my method: (ripper) stand under the shingles, go right to left on one row as fast as you can all the way down, just giver on that row then pick up that whole row or get someone else to pick it up while you go onto the next. you pretty much get all the nails.
I do that sorta. right hand on the ripper and left picks up the two shingles and piles it about the shingles that still need ripped off.
We was really getting it on one few years ago...Stevie was killing it stroking the pitch fork down one in each hand....3 toters couldn't keep up...bout half way down Stevie screamed......one of the old square head cap nails turned up and Stevie burried it in his knuckle.deep ...like 3 quaters ......slowed way down after that.....

I lived north of Wisconsin's Potato fields and I remember roofers used "Potato forks to pull shingles.

What I do is loosen the shingles from underneath then come back rip em up like 3 taps and finish with pulling nails
One of my best friends owns a roofing company and the last job was a 50 square 12 pitch....tear off and shingle.10 guys on the crew started at 6:15 am and finished the job at 8:15 pm not a single crooked shingle on the roof.
That's insane! I would pay top dollar for guys like that. Look at 50 sq 12 pitch n say let's get it done in 1

i use my red ripper and stand on the shingle make nce piles 2 by two doesnt take long and much more efffective when working byself
Red rippers all we used in Helgason they work great I personally switched to grants version more arc in the metal.

@@williamcutrell7456 .. Another advantage of leaving the paper on is that you can see all the nails that are sticking up and need to be either pulled out or Hammered down

I never knew why roofer charge so much until I got up and tried to do my roof myself. Now , it seems like a pretty fair price😅
Confused on why you never wear gloves
Depends on pitch of roof and condition of shingles…..but I found the best way is to start 4courses down from top have two guys picking up the trash and work across the roof like a typewriter moving down 4 course each time.very fast and very little trash to pick up and the shingles come up whole instead of small broken pieces.
I am wondering why the tear off with only one layer of shingles? I am contemplating doing my roof and been thinking about whether to add a 2nd layer or do a complete tear off again?

thanks hunter, always appreciate hearing from you. i was just making sure it was tight. they didn't use ringshank 8's when they installed the plywood and it was poorly nailed on top of that so most of the corners were loose and some of the seams needed sunk tight

2. Plywood
3. Hot day.
Have all those then you can rip 10 square in 45 mins

Is their a reason you didn't get the shingles boomed up to the roof instead of dropped on the ground?
He mentioned in his last video; the brick driveway won't support the weight of the truck and boom
@@tdgdbs1 thanks for answer bud! yes the pavers were the only reason, often times tree's or power lines will prevent us getting a boom in there too. apparently the hydraulic fluid in the boom lift can cause an arc if close enough so they're not aloud to put the within 20 ft. (they usually do anyway though haha)
Plus you still have to move the shingles to tear off. We never put them on the roof. Get a shingle lift.
I like that you guys run your paper straight. So many bums don’t. This is critical, cuz when your laying it acts as a quick reference if you get bums runnin crooked.

Just me, but i stand in front of the shingles and let them fall to my feet, sticking as i go, and when i get maybe 3 courses from the bottom, i toss the stack, then for the bottom 3 courses i let it drop

Some work getting done! How do you measure a roof like this? Can it be estimated from the ground or you need to walk it?
Just count the shingles
I prefer to walk it. its more accurate that way and I get a better idea if there's any bad wood and roughly how much I need. to each their own really on that one. some people pay for an eagle view. I can get them if I want through a shared account with my shingle supplier but I still get up there.

uhm. I'm about to put driftwood on mine. i'm undecided between o.c or landmark tho. but really i wouldn't go too fancy personally unless you got boocoo bucks and a really steep roof. otherwise, just pick one that pops. Gaf, landmark and O.C...cant go wrong in my opinion

@@NWIVeteranConstruction u said driftwood...u should check out the color sandune...its a amazing color and relatively close to driftwood in a way..the last 7 out of 9 jobs I've done the customer went with sandune..its popular.

It’s hard to explain but we have custom made stripping tools made out of ice scrapers that we bent.

i just grab a ripper, get 2 or 3 courses rip in one line and stack em in seperate nice piles, to carry later, to the bin or ground drop so pack it is easier,
never ground drop a walkable roof tho

not to be rude to you guys but the way your ripping it is the dumbest ways possible. I use red rippers and go sideways ripping two rows at a time, putting the longer shingle on the bottom of the two. Also as you rip the shingles off piling them about you in neatish piles .if you would like to see a video of it just let me know. It would definitely help you out and make your rips faster.
Lifting up from the side disturbs alot of granules leaving more cleaning at the end I normally walk backward to the ever using a roofing spade and the bottom of the shingles lay the shingles on my toes as shuffle backwards.. this way everyone can be ripping side by side and everyone takes they're own need u disturbed piles as they go far less gutter clean up and no need for dragging tarps to the bin if your know how to hit a trailer properly
You're right, and long pants and sleeves
It is way faster to tear off 1 shingle at a time and throw it behind you. And its cleaner. You can control tearoff. And its easier to throw into dump truck.
I've used most of them and to me the best one is the SHINGLE PEELER! its a little heavier but faster

Bottom upwards works best no matter how they’re laid.
ALso you should just buy a power ladder. Cost a couple grand buy saves hours each job bringing up bundles, ice shield and felt.
If you just get the material delivered to you and have it roof topped it's even easier just make sure and get the peak torn off before it gets loaded
When is it necessary to put an ice barrier over felt? I thought it’s either one or the other. Great video, cheers..
It’s about the codes in the area you’re working, and you put ice/water up the valleys and On the overhangs till you’re past the exterior wall to whatever code is in you’re area as well as around chimneys and crickets under the flashing. You felt the rest.

Fucking awesome looking job you got there can’t believe the luck you have with the labour such a shame!! Just a friendly tip on that power ladder if your still using it ( looks identical to one I use to use) even tho it says 200 lbs or whatever it is on carriage I wouldn’t be putting any more then 2 on it. The inside track pops off very easy with top guy unloading in that exact way (pulling off one side). I’ve seen it dozens of times and seen 2 motors get crushed. Good luck and wish you were more local

I've found pillows in the attic for insulation, a vintage Pepsi can from the early 60's, bullets, scorpions, billboard ads used for roof sheathing, paving stone used to replace a missing tile, a garden with flowers growing from excess bird poop, coffee cans for flashing and the homeowners underwear used to plug a leak.

Yes because I use a smaller time dumpster co. He just lifts it up on his trailer n pulls it with a regular truck.

Funny thing I'm left handed but was taught how to shingle my a right hander I shingle from left to right it even seems weird to go the other way now
Tear off that back 22 square,prep it and shingle it,throw them shovels away,tear off under the paper your get bigger cookies,leaving that paper on is asking for them young ones to slip or yourself.
the bottom was on good. we took the paper off asap. and with the tear off shovels it was much more efficient because the nails get popped as you go. i exhaust all options before resorting to the tear off bars
I was a legendary tare off guy, beat a 250 marine. Pulling by hand from the bottom up you get sheets.

My house was stapled (that is some lame ***"). You could grab a shingle, then just start a run like a zipper and practically pull an entire strip of them from bottom to top from the strip to the ridge. It was ridiculous, no idea how those shingles stayed on with the winds (hurricane) we get sometimes. I was dreading pulling that roof, and it was ridiculously easy.
I nailed five per in the architectural that is up there now...dreading stripping that roof, and its time is coming. I have one of those flat pullers, but it has wide triangular teeth. I think I might get a second one and grind slots in the tooth bases. Looked like that second wedge tool worked far better though...hell maybe I'll just grab one of those, and sell it when I'm done.
You can't stack these shingles like 3 tabs
How much per square do they charge? And i think 3 or 4 bundles = 1 square

If the gutters were good and there was no soffits or nice flowers. How about nailing a tarp to the roof and drape it down to the ground and out on the grass. I've always done this, I'm from long island, but since I moved to Indiana, every one does the board method. Why?

It's tough. I work it with these same tools, sideways. Usually you try to get the shingles off of it and don't bother with the ice shield itself. But sometimes you can get it off. Sometimes you just replace the wood
