His mother is no mother at all. How sad. Not only did she waste her own life bye barking up wrong tree after wrong tree. But she wasted her familys also. Being a disappoint to a wife or mother can be crippling.

Such a shame he didn’t seek help for his depression. His mother probably didn’t help. Suicide for his parents given the time would have been shameful so his funeral was probably a reaction to that.
I think the publishers constantly making him rewrite his book broke him. Why he didn’t try another publisher I don’t know. His mother was overbearing. It probably comes from her not being able to have a baby for 10 years so must have seen him not as a child but a miracle. I think that was the route of the problem and a combination of the publisher.
Now with the film she was probably trying to live a dream she had as a young woman. I don’t think she was capable of separating herself from her son. Then greed comes into play. Going back to the beginning of my opinion, if only he got help for his depression. 😢

Replying to another comment. I think the mother initially wanted her son's work to be published. But eventually, I think it was all about her.
I agree with the author the law is silly that the husband family would inherit.
Thirdly, why not give it to the woman who initially wanted to publish the second novel originally?
