Prince William calls for entrepreneurs to "repair this planet" not explore space travel - BBC News

  • Prince William has suggested entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Sir Richard Branson should focus on saving the Earth rather than engaging in space tourism.
The Duke of Cambridge said great brains and minds should be "trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live".
Talking to BBC Newscast's Adam Fleming, he explained how the inaugural Earthshot Prize will aim to reward people providing inspiring and innovative solutions to problems facing the planet.
The prize's name is a reference to the "moonshot" ambition of 1960s America, which saw President John F Kennedy pledge to get a man on the moon within a decade.

@@Reelunique At least for Elon Musk, much of what he does is for the better of mankind, whether that's Tesla or SpaceX. Tesla makes EVs, solar panels, battery energy storage, and software for a much more efficient society. SpaceX, counter to popular belief, isn't just a mission to get to mars (although that's the final goal). With satellites being highly crucial to well everything, creating an open industry where only governments could barely reach before is great for society. And I guess there's also that having a civilisation on mars would allow nations to start fresh on a new canvas and acts as a backup society if something were to go catastrophic.

One of them has chosen to have children, the others not. Its heartbreaking to me either way. Knowing that my grandchildren will have to suffer the effects of devastating climate change if we do nothing and that they will quite possibly choose not to have children themselves; while my other children have that realization weighing on them in their choice not to bring children into this world as it stands. My heart breaks that we have given our children and grandchildren such an uncertain future and that we have waited until one second to midnight to do anything about it.

Prince Charles has operated the estates under his control in a nature friendly fashion and champion organic farming, but all the royals have a lot of damage to atone for.
They are all guilty of shooting and fishing for pleasure. Blowing birds out of the sky with shot guns. In their quest for game, they run Grouse Moors, which are both cruel and environmental unfriendly. How many birds of prey have been sacrificed to ensure sufficirnt Grouse to face the guns on the "glorious" 12th. Sorry, but as far as I am concerned, the royal family as an institution are guilty of environmental hypocrisy, and they need to do more to atone for their past sins of animal cruelty and environmental damage.
The only good they have done is preserve the land from being turned into yet more urban deserts, but I doubt if their movies were in any way altruistic.

What he's pointing out, which I wholeheartedly agree with, is that it's a non-effective and roundabout, indirect way of dealing with climate change. Because the source of the problem lies with CO2 emissions, the obvious solutions, which are presently being directly addressed, are how to minimize our over-dependency on fossil-fuels, as well as curb our luxurious appetites to make the world our "oyster", without thoroughly considering the consequences to the environment.

    • @jjns5600

@Esphaeras Praestans Socio-economic issues does indeed drive our political-system, after all, Western societies are democracies, aren't they? They're not dictatorships, so it is as it should be. But I understand your point about the power of the fossil-fuel industries and their representational lobbyists, that all too often influence political decisions...for better or worse, depending on how you view it. I disagree with you on the budget of NASA however, it's always received a huge cut of the national revenue to support its fascinations from the beginning (Kennedy years), because of its strategic importance militarily (at first), and then subsequently because of the technological and commercial benefits its yielded.
How best national revenues are allocated to combat what clearly is an existential threat to our planet will continue to deepen, given the scope of natural catastrophes which become more intense each year. I agree with him on the emphasis shift to pool our governmental finances to look for solutions to our current crisis because, quite honestly, it is that dire.

With a huge population increase, a migration of the population away from the land, nature our environment and an explosion of consumption, both materialistic and energy, it's amazing we have kept things together this long. We can do it. the future is ours if we choose to engage in enriching our lives and our environment. I am quite concerned by China's rise to power however I am also concerned by Populism and the influence of cooperate interests in the west, more so even. If we are going to criticise China or gain its respect we first have to find a way to let democracy function better so it can effectively address these issues. Money is what stands in the way of progress towards a cleaner and less volatile future. It's not just *how* it's spent, but the fact that it exists at all - that it is charged and spent. Even if everyone had plenty of money to live on and do business with, that still wouldn't end serious ransomeware attacks, wars, and other negative issues that rely on money for their underpinnings.
Money itself, not just the love of it, is at the bottom of every horrible choice made in this world. I don't doubt that every sector in this world can be used to clean this planet up - but industry leaders have to lose their incentive to *not bother* first. They see the money they can gain through their despicable choices, and they don't care about anything else.
They'll even claim to "go green" if they think it will bring in other peoples' money just because they made that claim, yet they'll lie through their teeth about it!
Monetary economics is ruining this planet and humanity's chances for survival. We can have rule of law. We can use technology to mitigate supply and demand, and to keep track of who should contribute what and how much to their local and world-wide community. We can do all of this democratically.
Before anyone jumps down my throat about Socialism or Communism, I'll remind everyone that both of those are *monetary* economic systems. What I'm talking about here is going *non-monetary.* We can all do it, at the same time, the world over. That's the only way it would work for anyone - is if everyone did it at the same time.

As for George and the other kids liter-picking, this is an opportunity to teach him and them what all the different bins are for. Re-using, renewing, repurposing, recycling, and trash. Each home needs all 5 bins. Producers of product packaging should be required to only use recyclable or biodegradable packaging that is either multi-use (like glass, acrylic, silicon, cloth, metal, or wood) rather than single-use (like paper towels or non-bio-plastic picnic spoons) or is easy to re-use, renew, or repurpose and includes easy to follow instructions for how to do these things.
Carbon footprints shouldn't be allowed to be paid for monetarily. That's an easy cop-out. Instead, manufacturers should be required to switch to methods that don't cause pollution in the first place. We can't go to God and purchase a new planet from him, lol! We get *one* chance to do this right.
Everyone needs ample solar and wind power supplies for their homes and vehicles, and we all need reliable electric-only vehicles and a lot of charging stations, both at all our homes, at businesses, along highways, etc. We need other green transportation solutions as well.

Monarchism is a criminal act. Monarchism is a crime against humanity, the wholesale theft of a country's assets by a single family who then live on it like its a luxury version of welfare. Monarchs should be deposed and imprisoned, not fawned over by media, including all the horrifying "royal" despots who terrorize the middle east, not just the British "royals". Don't forget to tell William to turn out the lights in his castles and palaces, paid for by British tax dollars he pilfered from his British subjects.
