  • Part 6: Getting our Plymouth Valiant one step closer to being back on the road, working through a few issues, but in the end it only took a warm day and time to get this '62 Signet 200 running again, after a few decades.
We love this little early a-body Mopar we pulled from a barn at a junkyard.

After daily driving my '61 Valiant for EIGHT straight years, with only 145,000 miles on it, the 170 /6 put a window in the side of my engine block going 35 MPH on my way home from work with NO warning. No knocking, no nothing. Just, BOOM!

Wonderful cars the Slant 6 was an attempt to put a Big 6 cylinder motor in a small Car it worked well it was really a Truck motor that could spin and could drive at 90 mph all day i did this going from LA to Las Vegas and San Francisco a number of times and was OK on gas for the 1960s and 70s

as a mechanic in the early 70`s i loved working on slant 6 Chryslers .. i could change out an engine in about an hour and never have to go under the vehicle .. every fastener could be removed from the top ..

My first car was a 62 Valiant. Had a bad motor. I replaced it with a 225. Three on the tree changed to on the floor. Fun car!!!!

the trick to removing plugs in tight spaces is to use a length of 3/8 rubber fuel line as a swivel extension...granted the threads allow. 3/8 fuel line typically fits over the plug end like a spark plug boot.

I love the cars you pick! I had a Canadian built, titled a 1964 Plymouth Valiant, it was, 1/2 Dodge Dart from front doors back, 1/2 Plymouth Valiant Hood and front fenders, { It also was a right hand drive, wish I had it today! } slant six, 4 door Black with red interior. I got all sort of looks while driving that car. I bought a lot of cars back in the 60's, ? 200 dollar cars, 58 Dodge, 61 Plymouth, 54 Plymouth, 48 Dodge, ect ect ect. Packed them in old barn my dad had. Made money on most, sold parts, I didn't have skills to work on them much. But your cars brought back memories. Thank you! I watched every episode.

Wow, some great cars you had over the years. We have a '58 Dodge as well. Canadian cars were a mix of Plymouth/Dodge, I don't recall why, but made for some interesting cars. We just picked up another car today!

My first car $50 was a 66 Belvedere with a slant six in the 70's. When it hit the 20 belows all the new cars in the neighborhood would not start. The ol' slant six fired up on the second crank. I'd drive around and jump everybody. On a windy snowy night i'd have to shovel the car out, literally. I'd open the door and the snow would be over the seat up to the wheel. Aw..... college those were the good old days, eh? (NOT).

Disconnect the battery positive cable and hook up an ammeter to the clamp and post. See if there's a drain. If so, disconnect the alternator positive lead. If the drain drops, it's the alternator. Hook up an ohmmeter to the alternator positive terminal and case and see if the reading is high and reverse the leads and see if it's low. If so, the diodes are good. Set the ammeter for ma and check for a parasitic drain with the test leads hooked up to the battery positive clamp and post. If so, pull fuses. If the drain drops, there's a drain. Check for blown fuses. With the alternator positive lead hooked up, disconnect the field terminal and hook up a jumper from the positive terminal to field terminal. Start the engine. See if the voltage reading reads 15 at the battery indicating that the alternator brushes are good. If not, it's the regulator. Check a repair manual to make sure the information is correct. A Holly 1945 and 1946 can be used. One has the remote choke and the other has the choke on the exhaust manifold. The remote choke is on a Ford 3.3 -200 1983 Marquis. The water pump has 2 gaskets. There's a clear fuel filter. The needle valve is external. Remove the filter and line. Unscrew the needle valve. Fuel will come out. Screw the new one in. You may can get Champion N16Y plugs. The bands are adjustable after removing the pan. There may be a kickdown adjustment.

During an era where Detroit was putting together some of the most strikingly beautiful cars ever to hit the road......
I think they put together this car as a cautionary tale.
As if to tell us..... Be thankful, we can build really ugly s*** too.
If this car were my pet dog, I would shave his butt and teach him to walk backwards.
