It's not always hard to tell Mike Leigh and a ray of sunshine apart, but his films continue to take the breath away. At times as reassuring as a steaming brew; at others, as bleak as a winter's morning, Another Year sees the master filmmaker at the peak of his powers. It's a torch song to the struggles of life, ageing and running a small car. We chatted to Leigh and Lesley Manville whose performance as the film's struggling 40-something, Mary, is already attracting Oscar buzz. For more info. go to www.empireonline.com/interview...

Lesley was incredible in 'Another Year'. In my view she expertly plays 'Mary' who is battling with life alone, having no one to talk to, to be with in any area of life. Her loneliness is so powerfully depicted in this film. Her longing for a partner to share life with, to touch, kiss, engage with at all levels is so transparent. ' We witness her watching Tom and Gerry's 'shared togetherness' with such longing for what they have, and how she 'hides' behind her many masks projecting to others her life which quite simply would rather it not be and trying to 'manage' it. The film portray's Mary's aloneness so accurately so expertly in how she reacts to everything going on around her 'like she is not part of it'. In the final scene we see Mary's mask fall and witness her loss of 'pretense' and 'strength' lose its hold over her when she meets Tom's brother. Her acceptance of her 'life' and her 'aloneness' is heartbreaking to see and is so well acted by the brilliant Lesley Manville who in my opinion was simply incredible as 'Mary' . Only someone who has been alone like 'Mary' can fully understand empathise and know without question what its like to be 'so utterly alone' can relate to her. I relate to Mary so profoundly. I saw myself in her and that's why I know 'Lesley' played her so accurately it was off the scale. A film which will always be so dear to my heart - Thank you
Cathy One1 she outperformed herself. What a brilliant acting yet neglected from media....
Well said, Cathy.
Lest we forget we witness all of this without ever seeing her ALONE in itself, which is some other mastery entirely. Always sharing the scene, yet utterly convincing of her detachment from those within in it.
@@louissherrit2732 That’s right. I watched this film for the first time yesterday and have been thinking about it ever since. I pondered that we never really see Mary outside the prism of Tom and Gerri’s gaze. It led me to assume her lonely home life is even more unbearably tragic than what we saw actually portrayed in the film. An absolutely incredible performance by Lesley Manville.
@@louissherrit2732 spot on
One of the greatest Bristish actors ever.
Saw this last night - love Mike Leigh and knew what to expect within thirty seconds of Mary going off on one in the pub after work. What a remarkable portrayal of not only loneliness, but bitterness too. Yet she still was somebody you could have compassion for, even after her treatment of Katie. Superb writing, directing and acting - like all his films, I'll enjoy this even more each time I watch it.
Just watched this film, loved it. Lesley Manville really is so talented. I absolutely love the character Mary, unfortunately see myself turning out like her in many years to come haha. Loneliness scares me
She plays Mary so well
When she was onsceen you couldn't look at anynoe else. I really wish she was nominated for an Oscar as well, she is head and shoulders above all of the other actresses in this category!
Absolutely agree she should have been nominated. Articulate and well-thought out character.
@mottsgreenapples it doesn't have a plot, that's the whole point. It's just a reflection of reality, a reflection of the human condition. Yes it is depressing but loneliness affects so many people and I think the movie did an amazing job of portraying that.
I really need to see this film
Formidable actress....this my friends is what talent looks like. I believed every word that came frome her mouth she is outstanding
a very good film, I went to see it and it was amazing!
She should definitely win the Oscar for it!!!!!!!!
A fabulous actress!!
such a shame she didn't get an oscar nomination, and i'm american. hell, she should've taken the best actress category with no problem if all of the academy members saw another year.
Christian - I’m American as well. Mike Leigh has become my favorite writer/ director. He just eclipses John Sayles and Robert Altman. I’m working my way through his wonderful films. Another Year still holds the top spot ...
She is great in this movie. ❤
@ruscoast90 Judging from her performance in the film, it's still very much her day.
Shes beautiful, just saying
Gorgeous.
@mottsgreenapples thats a pity. Its a wonderful examination on human frailty. You dont think the end where Mary is excluded, feels excluded, yet showing some strength is poignant?
It would have been so easy to over play the part of Mary
Who cares about "Oscar buzz"? Great if she were praised elsewhere beginning w GB, in the BAFTA, for instance, as well as Cannes, Venice, Berlin...
This is my summary on the movie. She slept with her best friend Jerries son Joe?
Another Year !!!! Just watched for the 3rd time. Am I stupid or what ????? I just dont get it. There is no storyline to follow. Dont waste your money or time watching this. It is the dumbest movie I EVER SAw
Nine years later, did you grow up some more?
I just thought Tom and Jerry where smug gits. All I got from it.
