The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Underrated? Failure? What do you think?
definitely underrated. But that injury really ruined his wizards years
Underrated. But tbh, he should have retired with the bulls.
Underrated for sure!
I didn't want him to come back, because I didn't want those Bulls years get eclipsed by an old MJ, but it was as you said a cherry on top of his greatness.
I think it proved one thing, the whole "he wouldn't be as good today because the leagues more athletic" narrative aint it. He dropped 50 bombs on super athletic players like Baron Davis, Richard Jefferson, Kenyon Martin and many more while being a shell of himself athletically due to old age and injury.
Will not comment on the other guy as I don't want to be too harsh. So yeah I'm with ya Jonny(agreed with your MJ wizards vid), it's kinda annoying when people are so narrow-minded and context ignoring. But then again who cares it's their loss.
The craziest thing for me is that MJ didn't play for three years and had to do an even harder training to come back in shape. He had very bad knees, a miniscus surgery at the age of 39 and still played all 82 games in his last season with 37 minutes a game. At the end of the season he was 40 years old. Who can do things like that at this level?
He's the one and only. He was doing this in essentially the NBA's version of the deadball era too when the pace was much slower, spacing wasn't great, and scoring was much lower.
Add in the fact he had to cut back on that training due to getting his ribs broken.
Mj > lebron forever

I feel like Jordan’s Wizards years defined his career. He wasn’t afraid to try. He wasn’t afraid to fail. He wasn’t afraid to do what everyone who thought his career was so perfect didn’t want him to do. And he probably wanted to solidify his brand and sell a few more shoes.
Dont forget. He donated his salary to 911 victims.
I’d say it was definitely his bulls years. Without those people would not talk about micheal Jordan they way they do.
How does a injured 38 year old 6'6 shooting guard turn one of the worst defending and rebounding teams in the league into a top 3 rebounding and defending team in the league with himself being the only addition to the team. Did he have Rodman in practice teaching the other players?
@@JohnSmith32643 he taught them. What? Defending is only about rebounding?
@almarjyou The season before Jordan joined the Wizards they were one of the worst defending and rebounding teams in league. I'm asking how Jordan was able to turn the Wizards into a top 3 defending and rebounding team despite him being old and playing through injuries
A true class act, you didn't retaliate emotionally at all, you kept it in the realm of logic and facts, that's how you do it, shouldn't have to sub or slander anyone to make your point
And the other donkey definitely deserved to be mocked for having such stupid logic and arguments. Good on Jonny for showing restraint and keeping it professional, bc i for sure wouldn’t have.

LeBron james carried an absolutely horrific 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers team to the nba finals
In the modern NBA era (post 1960) only nine NBA top 75 players have won a championship without another top 75 player as a teammate
Rick Barry (1975)
Bill Walton (1977)
Hakeem Olajuwon (1994)
Tim Duncan (2005) (2007)

Steph Curry (2015) (2022)
LeBron james (2016)
Kawhi Leonard (2019)
Giannis Antetokounmpo (2021)
As you can see, LeBron James is on the list and Michael Jordan isnt
Lebron james has won 17 playoff series, without an nba top 75 teammate. Michael Jordan won ZERO
In the year before Michael Jordan and LeBron James joined their team and the year after they left their team, their records were

2018-19 cavaliers 19-63
2017-18 lakers. 35-47
2018-19 lakers were 20-14 when LeBron James got injured on Christmas day.
As you can see When LeBron James joins a team, the team improves more than Michael Jordan and when LeBron James leaves a team, the team always goes into the tank.
Michael Jordan, excluding the 94-97 seasons, when the NBA moved the three point line to 22 feet, was a career 28% three point shooter. LeBron James is a career 34% three point shooter
Michael Jordan was a great defensive player, in an Era where you could handcheck. Playing defense is much easier when you can handcheck. For nearly 6'9 250 LeBron James' entire career he wasn't afforded the opportunity to handcheck.

They were on pace to easily be the #1 defensive team when MJ and Rip were healthy together in their last 16 games which was of course the 15-1 record b4 mikes injury. He was steadily improving his own play from the 2-9 start and not so coincidentally the team started winning and getting better and better defensively.
I will say this.
It doesn’t really add anything to his GOAT argument (Clayton Crowley did a decent video arguing MJ as a Wizard was a failure, and others have pointed to his inefficiency and argued his per game stats were empty), but I would argue that Jordan could have been an important player for a lower playoff team if injuries didn’t occur.
He wasn’t anything of note as a Wizard, but he had his moments.
His player personnel decisions in those years though were pretty poor if I’m remembering correctly.
One other good thing that comes out of his Wizard years:
He became a playable player in more early 2000’s NBA video games.

I always figured it was because it was his last year and fans wanted to see him in the all star game one last time. But the stats in this video showed he definitely played at an all-star level.

@TheJuggernaut-qt9cs Erroneously? All I'm doing is asking a question. Maybe you can answer it for me? Jordan was the only major addition to the team yet they became a top rebounding and defensive team despite him being old and playing through injuries. If the "coaches changed scheme" was so impactful how come the Wizards didn't make the playoffs when Jordan got injured? They were nearly a playoff team without him but they couldn't make it.

Thanks for making this video Johnny, I've seen other videos saying that his wizard years were under-rated or overlooked, but to know the context in which they happened makes me appreciate MJ that much more. As usual, the man was crazy as hell 😂
That first year in 2001-02 was underrated. Lets not forget that the Wizards were a 19 win team and they got Jordan when he missed the last 3 full seasons. And by the all star break they were in real contention to make the playoffs before he and Rip Hamilton got hurt. He was playing at a high level until the All-Star break. But sadly after that knee injury, that kind of stopped the last gasp of burst MJ had.
2:05 didn't LeBron have a worse record than Jordan in the 2021-22 season and he had the likes of Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis on his team? Jordan took a 19-win Wizards and made them improve by 18 wins with no real addition to the roster other than him. And had he and Hamilton not got hurt, they probably would have made the playoffs and would have been a tough out for anyone in the Eastern Conference.
The MJ's underrated Wizard years video does a good job putting the situation into context. I don't always agree with your takes, but with that one, I think you got it spot on. It's one of the best basketball videos on the internet, and there's no reason to apologize for it.
The real problems were the broken ribs prior to 01 season and the tendinitis. The torn meniscus was just the topping. And when you add all those up and remind the minutes per game that he played, that actually makes him the Greatest in basketball. A genius!

It's not just the fact he was 38 joining a lottery team. It's that he didn't play for 3 years, while smoking cigars and eating terribly, and then CAME back. "Objects in motion stay in motion." It's Newton's first law. If you're around 40 you know how hard it is to get back into the gym, to be moderately active after going idle. Imagine getting back to battling in the NBA after doing nothing but lounging around? The fact he could do that is more impressive to me than anything involving a continuous streak!
Excellent video, your original jordan wizards video is one of my favorites all time!

I was pretty shocked when I saw his video about Jordan’s wizards years, especially because I was watching the NBA during that time and I knew for a fact that Jordan was playing really well. Great video, Jonny! You are without a doubt one of the best and most objective basketball CZcamsrs out there!

I simply won't argue with someone who not only probably wasn't even born when Jordan was playing with the Wizards, but someone who didn't even do their due diligence in making their video. Everyone was hyped to see Jordan playing again, and how far he could take the Wizards. When his injury happened, everyone was cringing at how he kept playing with that injury. It was great while it lasted, and people knew how important Jordan was on that team, because when he finally called it quits that season, the Wizards were horrible.
How does a injured 38 year old 6'6 shooting guard turn one of the worst defending and rebounding teams in the league into a top 3 rebounding and defending team in the league with himself being the only addition to the team. Did he have Rodman in practice teaching the other players?
@@JohnSmith32643, leadership, making your teammates accountable. If you're injured, all you can do is be present on the bench, in the huddles and in practices.
The GOAT of basketball CZcams. Cheers Jonny.
This was a dope watch. Love the perspective. Just subbed.
I love your content man thanks for making this. So very well done.
Never been here this early😊
Thx for the great content!
So you're not even going to mention his poor efficiency and low fg percentage? Not even how he wrecked kwames confidence?
There are certain criticisms that are legitimate. Nobody is claiming that MJ is perfect. Trading Hamilton for Stackhouse was just AWFUL. You could blame Wes Unseld for that (who was the fill-in GM for MJ), but I gotta believe MJ had a LOT to do with that poor decision. MJ was not the right leader for Kwame, plain and simple. Kwame needed a leader who was gonna build up his confidence and establish his sense of purpose. MJ can never be that... he's a drill sergeant, basically. It was a horrible pairing from the start.
Yes and you have to remember he was also an executive for this organization. It is NEVER a good idea to imitate what he did. How would you feel if your boss ended up having to do your job in an inefficient fashion and still berate you. There is a reason the organization decided to fire him even as a shareholder. He should have never played again.

Jonny, you’re quickly becoming one of my favorite vloggers. Keep it up!!
Great video. Great presentation of the facts, in-depth elaboration of context, and clear, concise commentary… free of hyperbole and bias. Excellent
Wow, i didn't recall that MJ was doing that great before tearing his maniscus. Dude was killing it
And MJ was an MVP candidate before the injury.
Dude. You are killing it w- the details in stats. Love the work you put in and respect
The og video you did of his wizards years is a classic, i was like this guy knows his stuff context is very important
12:24 Not just 38yo joining lottery team. But 38 yo retired for few seasons. It's not the same when some 38yp play continuously and someone comming from retirement. Completely different things.
I watched every game available during those seasons, hell... I bought a TiVo specifically to record as many available games.
Before the injury he was legit an MVP candidate.
One thing worth noting that you didn't mention, was MJ originally came off the bench and played limited minutes when he first came back. He wasn't gonna be a starter nor get many minutes. But that changed as injuries kept piling up and they needed the leadership on the floor. Another HUGE fact worth noting was MJ essentially played preseason the first two dozen games or so. He had the off season cut short due to Artest breaking his ribs, that alone would've shut down most player's entire season.
But MJ rushed his recovery, he wasn't 100% recovered from his injuries and yet he decided to come back. He was out of shape, over weight, and playing what would've been most player's 'OFF SEASON' workout to get back in shape. That didn't just contribute to his slow start but worse of all, contributed for the wear and tear on his body which led to further injuries because he wasn't ready to come back to play. He was starting to play better just when he was getting in shape, getting his wind and legs back but it was too late by then, he was putting pressure on his unrecovered body which led to the injury.
That injury carried over to his next Wizards season along with other injuries, he was never the same again. Worth noting that these weren't simple injuries either. It wasn't just a sharp pain, these were injuries that literally affected his shooting, his mobility, his lift, his breathing, even his ability to walk normally. HE HAD TO GET BLACK OOZE DRAINED FROM HIS KNEES AFTER EVERY GAME!!! That is not an exaggeration that is literally what happened. His knees were almost double their size from the swelling after games. His practices were limited to therapy almost every day.
These injuries would force star players in their prime to sit out entire seasons today, even with modern medicine and therapy. Yet he played with broken fingers, busted knees, bad back, etc.
That's not an excuse, just some perspective for those that continually want to diminish what he did and how he did it, while making excuses for other players.
I talked to Magette and Q Rich during a Clippers family event before MJ came back with the Wiz and I asked them about MJ coming back (this was before his injury). They looked at each other and shook their heads and smiled, Q Rich simply said "MJ is MJ" and shook his head. Other players have collaborated that MJ would've been dropping 30+ if he didn't get injured int he off season. We've seen glimpses of that from time to time as a Wiz.
Every so often there's a "What if" scenario about players and their careers had they not been injured, yet people always forget MJ as a Wiz. What if Artest never broke MJ's ribs and he came back as a Wiz healthy and in shape?
The way MJ and Rip played healthy together in limited time and the fact they were on pace for #1 defense, i don't think any of the East teams would have been able to handle them unless Jordan ran out of steam in 7 games series, but the east was wide open and only got worse from that year on. BUT, even if he made it to the Finals, he'd be 6-1 and people would then use that against him, losing in the Finals and getting beat by Kobe, ignoring context etc
Absolutely correct on all counts!! 💯! Well said! Kudos
Only people that saw it during that time can attest to MJ’s greatness even as a Wizard!
I was just in shock during that time that MJ was playing that great and having that type of huge impact on that team with all the circumstances behind his return and with his then current teammates! He was amazing!
Never seen anything like it before nor since! A 38 year old player coming off of a 3 year retirement while not being 100% healthy to begin with taking a lottery team to new heights while also schooling the next generation of younger superstars in the process was truly amazing! Like I said never seen anything like it before nor since.
Thank you for your post it’s always refreshing to see someone who has seen these things live and knows the context behind it!
This is the best video on this subject I have ever seen. I didn't even realize most of this.
Why do people keep trying to diminish great players like jesus christ they dont even try to accurately have good criticism of them…they literally just leave context out to make them look bad and hate and i dont know why they did that
didnt know jesus christ played basketball!
@@manticore8520 Jesus Christ was one hell of a baller, willing to sacrifice himself for the team too.
Also consider the average points per game back then was like 95... not 115 like it is today.
The wizards years are the SECOND time he walked onto a terrible roster, with no upgrades anywhere except him and raised their W/L records singlehandedly.
🎯🎯🎯
I always say exactly what ur saying. Jordan went to teams that wasn't good the season b4 he arrived, meanwhile his teammate went to other teams that were already playoffs contenders so it's easy to cakewalk to the playoffs when they're already Contenders without him
MJ's second three peat he had the best roster in the league from 96-98. When he "retired" in 1994 his team won 55 games, Pippen was 3rd in MVP voting while BJ Armstrong and Horace Grant were all stars. In 1995, MJ Pippen and Rodman were all defensive 1st team. Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc are all currently in the HOF, Ron Harper was a starter on any other team, Steve Kerr retired as the NBA's best 3 point career percentage and season percentage.
John Paxson hit a finals winning 3 in 1993. Steve Kerr hit a finals winning 3 in 1997.
Please stop the myth that MJ had no help- when he had no help he couldnt even win a playoff series. When he did have help, it was in the form of the best roster in the league during his 2nd three-peat.
@phillyphan1346 the Bulls was a good team with a great player fella. Each player on the Bulls played their rolez very well including Jordan lil fella lol.
2ndly we're talking about when Jordan and Pippen 1st joined the teams , meaning Jordan rookie season and his 1st season in Washington and with Pippen when he joined the Rockets and the Blazers and clearly when Jordan became a Bulls they only won 27 games the season b4 Jordan arrived and in Washington they only won 19 games b4 Jordan arrived. When Pippen went to Houston and Portland they were already playoffs contenders b4 Pippen arrived.
U know if u actually READ instead of skimming through what someone wrote then you'd probably understand lil fella.
Nice try though fella lol
@phillyphan1346 Jordan were retired for almost two seasons so why didn't u address the 94-95 season when Pippen was imploding all season long and the Bulls was a 500 to sub 500 team barely in the playoffs hunt and Pippen begged Jordan to come back in 95? Paxson, Kerr and Kukoc were there when Pippen was the lead guy and the Bulls took two steps back when Jordan retired.
Nobody said Jordan didn't have help lil fella I think ur confusing that talking points with lebron because u BronSexuals always make the claims that lebron had to take a bunch of bums to the Finals lol.
Nice try though fella lol
Your consistent use of statistics is impressive keep it up man
I discovered you with the previous video on the subject, subscribed ever since.
Thank you for this. I see so many bad takes about these seasons, especially from people who are my age and younger. They just look at the final stats and the team's final record, with no context.
The fact that Clayton didnt include Kobe in his goat series shows his biased hate towards Kobe and MJ

I was in school at the time, and we were all following mj in his return. We saw every single broadcasted game. He was insane before the injury, we though the wizards had a chance at a deep playoff run, and thats with a mid squad. My fav was Jahidi White (We called him Budget Shaq)
You fuckin brought it for this video. Great insight
Context matters. Its why i love your channel. So few people provide context and use numbers to make their arguments
Awesome video and great clarification of your previous stance on MJ's Washington years.
The 500 win rate comment is painfully ignorant and honestly sounds like he flat out lied. Like you said, the Wizards were better than that, but they were also 6 games below when they shut Jordan down…. So where does his 500 comment even come from??
Appreciate your work man. You always help my arguments about MJ being the GOAT. Thank you for this video because my LeBron loving brother always brings up this talking point lol.

During his wizards years, he was injured for example lower back and the drain fluid in the knee stuff every game. Gotta give credit to mj with those injuries he still managed to play and with 82 games in one of those seasons. He was in the mvp candidate talks and was putting stats that is similar in the modern era minimum stats with 20+ppg and to add up most of his teammates are literally newbies. We all know old mj avg like 30+ppg his entire career in the bulls.

@@JohnSmith32643 everybody knows mj is capable of all those shit even at old age or being injured. Mj can be a coach a trainer and a player and even can be an owner. Nothing is impossible with him around. His prescence alone is impactful to other teams.
Michael Jordan was never a failure in Wizards. The Wizards was never a great team, but Jordan in his 1st comeback season 2000-2001 he did play great until that knee hit he took that ruined his comeback. Also, Jordan even at 40 was still tougher then many star players out there now who cry evrery time someone touches them or fake being hurt or cry they want to be traded because they feel they deserve more.
Anyway, Jordan still looked GOOOD in those Wizard colors and jerseys, that is for sure true - ANd I'm a long-time Bulls fan who wanted him back, but still respected his choise.
Didn’t know missing the playoffs wasn’t a failure. I guess Jordan was taking steps to success

As an avid Jordan hater that was very much an adult during those Wizards years, the fact that he had me frustrated and worried that the Wizards were going to make a deep playoff run before his MCL tear is all you need to know about how badass he was those seasons - especially the first season he was there.
I was actually relieved to hear he was shutting it down and that's when I realized I was a true Jordan hater, I was happy for an injury.
It is impressive with the context. It’s obvious it’s not as impressive as his time as a Bull but it’s impressive given all the points you made. Thanks for sharing!
Clayton and Jonny releasing callout videos has real mommy and daddy are fighting vibes 😭
Jonny, this vid is an example of why you're probably the best basketball content provider I've found. It's objective, intelligent, and reasonable, which shouldn't stand out so much, but most people and content providers don't do a great job in those areas. Clayton's good, but you really thoroughly dismantled his argument. We all have opinions, but the more we put our biases aside and just focus on the discernible evidence, the more accurate our takes will be. GREAT JOB!
Taking into account the lower-body injury and his stats prior to it is responsible analysis. Also, he'd injured his finger as well. Add that to his age and the overall strength of the team without him (not good)...he did very well. Too bad it hurt his overall PPG for his career, but he played solid, all factors considered.
If MJ doesn't get hurt, and the gm trades Brown for Elton Brand like MJ wanted, they would have legit been a contender in the eastern conference
I remember being young and asking my uncle to beat the lakers in live 03 on the hardest mode with the wizards. He beat them and me and my siblings were cheering like it was the best thing ever.
This is why context is needed before criticizing someone.
