    I received a lot of questions on a previous video about how to setup your X32 to have your main room mix go out to a Matrix. This allows you to have a mix volume for your room and a different volume for your stream. You also can setup specific compression, EQ, and even a limiter for your stream. We walk through all of that in this video.

    No questions - very clear explanation, thank you! I can see this being useful for the studio, where you may want to have different stereo mixdown tracks adjusted for EQ and compression alongside a main L/R bus mixdown. That would save a world of time doing "what-if" type mixes with multiple EQ and dynamics being recorded to the DAW simultaneously. I've never heard of anyone doing this. so I'll do an article on it. I want to thank you for putting me onto this capability.

    Great video! Saved it for reference as it was complete! I have the x32 compact and if I hadn't watched a thousand videos already on this thing I would have been lost lol. There's a learning curve, but it's not rocket science. Using it as an interface really made me take a dive into the routing. Comes set from the factory to send the signal straight out the USB card after the pre amp. No eq or dynamics are working. I wanted to get post eq and dynamics signal to the card outs and found out you can use the P16 outs for the card which are post eq and dynamics and still correspond to the 16 actual inputs. It's actually all the possibilities I can't wrap my head around, not the routing pages lol

    • @tommycagle
      @tommycagle Před 4 lety

      Okay. I have my X32 setup just like you described in this video. I’m getting stereo sound to my computer (using x32 drivers and VMIX). The volume level is really low. When I raise the sliders on the matrix faders it raises the volume going into my computer AND the house (speakers in the auditorium) volume. How can I setup to where the matrix is independent of my house volume?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 4 lety +2

      Starting with the gain structure of each channel, make sure you have enough gain coming into each channel (usually signal up to -9 on the meter). Then, build your mix which will go to the main output. Assuming you want that exact mix to go to the stream you will send a signal (in the sends tab) and make sure you get it up to "0" for level. I recommend setting the matrix as Pre-fader which means moving the actual volume faders for the matrix will not impact the volume... safeguard from the random finger-hitting-the-fader move. You then have EQ and compression options on the matrix to help get some more level, but I also recommend running the Precision Limiter after EQ and Comp to get the final mix level up for your stream.

      I plan to make a video to cover this soon as you are the fourth person to ask a question similar to this in just a few days. The basic idea is to select the channel, and find the Stereo LR Bus button (to the left of the screen) and make sure it is grey meaning it is turned off from the main BUS. If it is orange it will go to the main LR Bus and be heard in your house mix.

    Great Video! We used your One Console, One Tech video to get us going (It was awesome).
    My question is what would be the advantage of using a matrix for your stream as opposed to a mixbus? Since the matrix follows the mains, it seems like you lose control over adjusting the mix specifically for the stream.

      I do personally use the Post Fader MixBUS setup and find this to be the most versatile and user-friendly setup to use. Obviously, if you need more Buses for monitors than you have to start weighing out your options and make some choices, but I do prefer the Stereo MixBUS setup. The DP48's are great options for adding more monitors without taking up Buses. The P16's can work as well, but I find those to be too limiting. Let me know what solution you end up putting in place, I'm always curious.

    Hi Dave, when you send the MainL/R to the matrix are you selecting Pre EQ to avoid any room EQ settings and then applying your own Matrix EQ for the stream? Also, are you sending FX to the matrix? I find the streams can use more reverb than in-house mixes. Thanks!

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 4 lety

      Yes, selecting PreEQ would be the best thing to do. I am not actually mixing in this fashion as I have an entire console dedicated for stream, but PreEQ will give you a flat curve to work from and then you can use the EQ on the Matrix to set for your stream. In terms of reverb, you are correct that it takes a much larger amount of reverb to make your stream sound natural and a bunch to make it sound "effected". I'm building some future videos to walk through in depth of my stream setup, but to get started you can just send the desired FX into the Matrix similar to what you did for the mains.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety

      Typically a matrix setup looses its individuality of the mix just based on the concept of a matrix. A matrix is a mix of buses and most people start out with the house mix (stereo LR Bus) and stop there. To further refine your matrix mix, you would need another bus to supplement and add to it. Here are two options of ways to enhance your mix. The first is a way to alter your current setup, the second is (I believe) a better option for live-streaming… and the way my church currently runs their mix. I hope these help you out.

      Have you checked to see if it is distorted on the board? You would attach headphones and hit the solo button on the matrix you are using.
      If not, what streaming software are you sending the signal to on your computer? Depending on your setup you could be overloading the software or just routing the signal in a way that it doesn’t like.

      My guess is you are trying to delay the audio to match up with a video source that is a little lagging. The method I showed you will not directly allow you to add a delay. Many stream softwares have a built in feature to offer delay within the software itself. We use OBS and do this in sone of our scenes. I did find this video from Behringer, but it is more geared towards using a hardwired XLR or other cabled output from the console which allows you to easily set a delay inside the X32.

      Yes, if you use this Matrix approach or a Post-Fader MixBUS, they will both be impacted by you muting a channel. In either of these setups when you mute a channel it is muted in the house and the live stream mix.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 5 měsíci

      We need to think about why it is in there to begin with. Normally those channels should be removed from the Stereo BUS so you select the channel, find the Stereo BUS button to the left of the screen and make sure it is NOT orange. This removes the input from going to the house mix. Then you can decide where you want to send that input… normally to a BUS for monitors. Make sure you aren’t sending a monitor BUS signal into your Matrix.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      I’m actually making a matrix mix video that will release this weekend. Typically a matrix will start with a copy of the house going to the matrix and then a stereo MixBUS pair to supplement natural sounding instruments in your room to have the same impact in your livestream. I personally prefer a Post-Fader AUX mix approach, but the matrix is another popular setup.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety

      Here is a general walkthrough:
      1) Select the desired MixBUS and build your mix
      2) Go to Effects > Home, mouse over the FX rack that corresponds to the MixBUS you are using, then set the source to "Insert"
      3) Go to Routing > Out and make sure the MixBUS is routed out a desired output (in your case it would probably be 13 or 14 since mains are 15/16)
      4) Finally, go to Routing > User Outs and set the output to go out Card 1/2 so your computer will pick it up.
      This setup is not difficult, but will have a number of steps to go through to make it work in your setup. I'm happy to help one-on-one if you want to go that route for a faster solution. If so, reach out on my contact card on my website at sound.allamhouse.com

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 měsíci

      We have to be specific about the lingo we use here as it makes a difference for clarity and understanding. Many people will interchange the word BUS and AUX in terms of mixing, but there are also AUX ins/outs which are different. Hopefully this is helpful to you.
      If you have monitor mixes built on Bus 1/2 and they are leaving the console on XLR 1/2 there will be no issue with routing your Matrix mix to AUX 1/2. The XLR outs are separate settings from the AUX outs.
      If you have monitor mixes built on Bus 1/2 and they are leaving the console on 1/4" cables going out AUX 1/2 then you have already routed a mix to these specific outputs and you can not route your Matrix to these outputs. You would need to use some of the other AUX outputs 3-6 to be able to move forward without impacting your monitors.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 4 měsíci +1

      You have a few options. You can take whatever mix you are sending now and duplicate it in the routing area to go out additional outputs. I personally don’t like using additional interfaces since the console is a 32 channel interface that can send across USB using the X-USB card on the back of the console. Less gear means less troubleshooting spots. That being said, this video might help if you decide to use the AUX outs on the back of the console for additional outputs. czcams.com/video/xGt1z5I7blQ/video.htmlsi=IZ_ijmIrfAlNDYNy

    • @AllamHouse

      You will connect your room mics like any other mic. Set proper gain structure and then add any EQ and Compression that you want. Go to the left of the screen and de-select the Main LR Bus button which removes this channel from going to your house mix. Push your input fader up to unity and then repeat this for your second mic. Now, choose a BUS, hit "sends on fader" and add these mics into the BUS and you can add the BUS to your Matrix stream mix or if you are using a Stereo BUS for livestream you can just select that BUS and add them directly into that stream BUS.

      A MixBUS for your livestream gives you the most flexibility for your stream mix. You can set the input levels individually for the stream. • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety +1

      To send a bus into a matrix all you need to do is go to the matrix later on the right side of the console. Select the matrix you want to adjust. Hit sends on fader button. Then go to the bottom layer (busses) on the left side of the console and you can raise the fader for the bus you want to add into the matrix. This is similar to adding inputs into a bus, you are just adding a bus into a matrix.

    One of the beter routing explanations of the matrix I've seen. I have another slight issue I'm chasing down. This console is driving me a bit crazy in this regard. I run a couple of ambient audience mics to liven up the recordings. In a DAW this isn't hard as I can just select the Direct outs from the console and input to my daw. For my livestream I DO NOT want these routed to the MAIN LR mix. I do not seem to be able to figure out my routing. Currently I'm running a submix to a mixbus on the M32 so I can control my stream mix with the M32 app and an iPad. I can only route my audience mics to the mixbus and have them show up if they are active and in the main mix. I routed outputs from the mixbus to an aux out and use a hard connection from there to feed my stream audio. Any thoughts on how to get a channel input into the mixbus WITHOUT runing it into my main mix?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 4 lety

      This is a consistent question and I need to make a video about it. Luckily this is a pretty simple fix. First, I recommend making your MIX Bus a pre-fader setup which will allow the mix to not be impacted by your main faders, but only on your iPad. Then, Select the crowd mic channel(s) one at a time and go to the LR button just to the left of the screen. Make sure it is NOT lit. Then bring your fader up with the iPad and it should work.
      If you have your MIX Bus set to Post-fader then you will need to deselect the LR button and then bring the fader to unity (0) before controlling it with the iPad.

      There is no way to push a matrix (M/C) back into another matrix. In theory your inputs would be going into your main mix and therefore they could get pushed to your stream matrix. You can change the tap point of your main mix going to your stream to be Pre-EQ and that would send a full spectrum of audio into your stream matrix where you could the EQ at the stream level. We use OBS to manage our stream, but most streaming software handle the audio-in from the board the same way. We run a USB cable from the back of the console into the computer. In this Matrix setup any changes to the house mix will impact the live stream mix as well. • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před rokem +1

      This is a thick question with many parts that I hope I can cover briefly.
      1) OBS will only recognize signal from USB 1/2 so you will need to get your stream mix leaving the console on these two channels. Make sure you have added the X-USB driver on a windows machine (unneeded for Mac).
      2) If you have all these in place and you do not have sound in OBS you will need to check your security settings. This video covers that for both Windows and Mac. czcams.com/video/wBHxLNjcZzo/video.html
      3) If you want to stream and record, this video talks through those details and all the things to consider. Obviously, you want to make sure your computer can handle the processing of recording and streaming at the same time. czcams.com/video/geXp2Vckfpw/video.html
      4) Your last item speaks to playing audio from the laptop across USB and I assume that is while also multitrack recording and streaming. This will put some stress on your computer for sure so test this before trying to run it live. In terms of the routing, the computer will send into the console across USB1/2 (as an input) and you can map this to some of the AUX Ins using the custom User In settings. These input settings should not conflict with your output settings that were discussed in point #3 above.

      Typically, I do not use a Matrix setup (copy of the mains) because the main speakers and room you are in are paired together to sound good and be mixed/EQ’d specifically for this pairing. Everywhere else you send this mix needs to be mixed to be on a phone, car, or other player that is not your room. For this reason, I use a MixBUS pair to craft my mix specific to the livestream needs. This would allow you to turn down the volumes on the instruments that are too loud and make a better experience for your listeners. There will be a red light next to the USB connector. Keep in mind you are using an older printer cable style so it is USB A on one side and USB B on the other. There will be a similar looking plug labeled "network", but that is NOT the connection you are looking to use.

    I have a question. Why did you route from matrix to aux?
    Can't the matrix be routed straight to USB?
    Also, if I select a matrix, will pressing sends on fader open up it's own mix or is that feature only for a mixbus?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      Yes, you can route the Matrix directly to USB, but some people don’t use USB and need to use a physical output to go from the console to their video switcher which is what the AUX outs allows them to do.
      A MixBUS is a mix of inputs, but a Matrix is a mix of MixBUS so when you select a Matrix and hit ‘sends on fader’ the MixBUS layer is the one that will allow signal to be sent to the Matrix.

      @AllamHouse  Před rokem +1

      The easiest thing to do is:
      1) Go to Routing > Outs and confirm you have Output 7 set to Main L and Output 8 set to Main R. If not, that is okay, just note what outputs are being sourced by Main L/R, but I am assuming you are using Output 7/8.
      2) Go to User Out and set User Out 1 to source from Output 7
      3) Go to User Out and set User Out 2 to source from Output 8
      4) Go to Routing > Card and under Output 1-8 select User Out 1-8. You should see Main L and Main R show up in the graph to the far right.
      5) Plug a USB A-B cable from the X-USB slot to your computer
      6) Make sure you have the driver installed on your computer if you are using a Windows machine.
      Note that this will ONLY send your Main LR out and you loose some functionality across the USB. If you need to still have access to the rest of your channels across USB you might consider a custom approach as I discuss in this video. Understand I am talking about a live stream mix in the video where you would be using the Main L/R.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 20 dny

      Thanks for reaching out. A Matrix does remove some of the flexibility of individual instruments into your livestream since you are using the main mix and/or buses to feed the matrix. That being said, you do have a few things I would want you to check.
      (1) Check the gain on the fader input to make sure you have enough signal coming into the board. Often times we have subs in our PA which require way less gain from kick drum and bass guitar and then we only turn up the gain according to what we hear in the house mix. That causes problems downstream and I tend to like having my input levels at -12dB on the input meter of the console.
      (2) Once you have the correct gain set, now move forward with making sure your house mix is still correct. You might need to turn down the input fader for the bass if it is too much now.
      (3) Finally, set the bass guitar in the broadcast mix if possible. You mentioned a guitar bus being used. If that is being used for just broadcast then that is the location you want to turn it up a little (if needed). If that bus is sending to your house mix and causing it to be too much then you might consider adjusting your house PA a little to handle the higher level of the bass guitar.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 5 měsíci +1

      While you can make that change of the limiter, most people aren't looking to run a limiter for their house mix. This approach of a Matrix for live stream that begins with the house mix will allow you to build your house mix and then augment it as needed for your live stream. In the end, you will need to create two different mixes... one for your room and one for your stream. Both will have different needs to make them set well in their own space. I personally don't use a Matrix since it doesn't give me any additional benefits from running a Post Fader MixBUS setup. This video covers that MixBUS setup and how I run my live stream every week. The Producer and Rack versions only have one output so you would need to get a basic 1/4” Y adapter to provide you the ability to plug two headphones in. @AllamHouse  Před rokem +1

      In this situation you will need to setup something like a monitor you would use on stage (In-Ear to be specific). You don't need to have custom in-ear monitors, but it will utilize a headphone amp and some headphones. Your engineer working the house mix will use the connection on the soundboard and the person running the live stream mix would use this additional setup. Obviously, you will want a stereo monitor for your live stream engineer and there are two options depending on your proximity to the soundboard. You can purchase a wireless transmitter and connect your Stream BUS output to this monitor and it is all set to go. You can also grab a headphone amp to use which would allow you to connect it to the board to provide a wired headphone connection. Lastly, you can use the AUX outs on the back of the board (along with a little routing adjustment) to send into a 2 channel audio interface which would then provide you with a headphone connection. In the end you will need to determine how far this live stream engineer is from console and then find the best option to fit your budget.

      I’m not exactly sure of your current setup to help you figure out your next step.
      You can add your main house mix into a matrix using the method discussed in the video. You could add a MixBUS in addition to the main (or just as a stand alone mix into the matrix) by selecting the matrix on the right side of the console. Then click sends on fader and (on the left side of the console) go to the bottom layer for MixBUS. Then raise the fader for the MixBUS you want to add into the matrix.

      It sounds like you are trying to send a house mix to different rooms or locations. The easiest thing to do is follow this video to send your house mix to multiple matrix, then you can send that out to various outputs on the back of the console. So the easiest thing to do is make 1 matrix that you like with your desired mix. Then choose an XLR output that will send the signal from the board to each of the desired locations (most likely amps for each location). Then, in the Routing section of the console go to “outs” and set the selected XLR outputs to be fed by the one matrix mix you built. This only takes one matrix and duplicates it for many locations.

    should i send my USB output postfader or something else?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      You would want to do post-fader so your volume fader of the Matrix will control your stream volume.

      With my current setting, if I raise the house to anymore it will be to loud in house, but my stream volume is still low when listen I online. OBS is optimized already, so how can I higher the input on the stream more than the house? I’m already setup with a Matrix

      It all starts with proper gain structure and then some mastering techniques. Check out this video as a starting place.

    Hello! What is this firmware?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      Firmware V4.x is found on the Behringer website. You can download it to a thumb drive and then load it to the console to get the feature updates. Make sure to save your scene before doing the update. This video walks you through saving scenes. czcams.com/video/G0bqVeviRKg/video.html

    I followed all the steps and try to record USB channels 1 & 2 in Reaper, but nothing is coming through. This is driving me mad....

    • @AllamHouse

      1) check (one more time) that you have the routing on the console done correctly.
      2) If you have a Windows machine, make sure you have downloaded the X-USB driver from the Behringer website.
      3) If you still do not see anything, check this video here for the security settings to check on both Mac and Windows. czcams.com/video/wBHxLNjcZzo/video.html

      @@AllamHouse Routing is correct. I also see the aux send channels 1 and 2 moving. The security settings on my Mac do not have a microphone option, so that is no use. BTW I do not use the effects (should I?)

    • @RichardvanBemmelen
      @RichardvanBemmelen Před 2 lety

      Well, I added the effect, and now it works! Strange...

    • @AllamHouse

      This seems odd that you added FX and now the signal is being received by the DAW. It would be interesting to look at your routing settings for an educational moment and see what is going on under the hood. I'm glad you got it working.

      @@AllamHouse Well, today it stopped working again! It looks like my USB connection to Reaper on my Mac is very unstable. Maybe I should upgrade to a more recent version of Reaper...OK, restarting Reaper fixed it....
