  • This is a Viper Green Porsche 911 F-Model from 1972, the only model year that saw the famous oil flap. It has been extensively restored and rebuilt with a ludicrous addiction to detail. But is it any good?

    I remember in the late 1980s people repainting these 911s to a gaudy red or black in hopes of shedding the then out of fashion colors from the early 70s. What a beautiful "retroformation" to see this 72 restored to its original viper green.

      Ohhhh yeah. We’ve all made that experience at some point. When my Alfa Spider was involved in an accident 15 years ago, buying a 911 from the money I got from the insurance was very close. Maybe 5k missing or so.

    WHAT A LUSCIOUS COLOR GREEN VIPER IS, especially on this'72 Porsche
    The first time I saw this color was at Luft 6 at Universal Studios backlot in L.A. in 2019. My wife and I were wandering around ogling at all of the cars and then we both picked up our pace and started walking in the same direction. And there we were, both standing in front of a gaggle of 914's all of them different colors but my wife and I were standing in front of one stunning, mind captivating, sensuous green paint job. We asked the owner of the car what is this color and he said Viper Green. With all of the different colors presented on these 914's I thought this owner just took the color from the American muscle car called "Viper". But later I overheard someone say that it was a Porsche color.
    How did they pick that color? I have an idea. Earlier in my life I was a herpetologist (dealing with snakes, lizards and such). I was at a herp show in San Diego, CA when I spotted this snake in a cage wrapping itself around a large tree limb. It moved with power and stealth. I asked the owner what kind of snake it is and she said an Emerald Green tree viper. She said it was in the family Viperidae that included adders, pit vipers (like rattlesnakes, cottonmouths) nasty viscous snakes. Vipers move with rapid speed, are venomous and have long, hinged fangs that inject poison and can kill you. Is any one just a little bit scared now!
    So the Porsches with this color represent an animal that is scary fast, venomous and can kill you, Now that is a color to have for a car - but only if you are bold enough! Did Porsche choose the color because of those qualities, did the American car have that name because of the snake power or was all this just a happenstance? Not. Advertising and branding companies think long and hard about their choices of words and concepts. Hisssssssssssssss.

    Reminds me of a 912 that back in the early 70’s, Uli my Austrian ski instructor and then Innsbruck student drove, having traded in his beetle.
    Curious how 911 and 105’s imbedded themselves into a young school boys mind and fantasy. Only emphasized perhaps, with visions of Camilla Sparv and Robert Redford in the film “ Downhill Racer”

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you, Hugo.
      Indeed the school boys question is interesting. Google gives me some interesting information about the age distribution. Unsurprisingly, 45-54 and 55-64 are the biggest groups with together 55% and about equally big. Surprisingly, however, 25-44 are just as big as one of those and below 25 are at least 10%. There is hope that our heroes survive!

    Capolavoro!
    Ho la fortuna di guidare una 2.4 T model year 73 light yellow
    Non so se siete a conoscenza del fatto che nei primi anni Settanta c'era ancora un po' di diffidenza verso l'impianto di inezione in Italia (...patria dei Weber e Dell'Orto) così l'importatore Porsche (Autogerma) proponeva un modello modificato da nuovo che potremmo definire "T/S": cioè una T con i carburatori Zenith originali ma con pistoni, alberi a cammes e altre cosucce delle S (ne hanno realizzate una ventina circa)
    La mia è ispirata a quel modello... tanto gusto alla guida, tanta gioia alla vista 😊
    P.S. per la splendida viper green del filmato ho dei dubbi sui rostri posteriori: se ho visto bene sono completamente neri, sia la "base" sia la striscia di gomma aggiuntiva, quando la "base" dovrebbe essere in metallo lucido che rimaneva a vista sulle "trim T" oppure rivestito con la striscia di gomma per le "Trim S" optional presente su questa verde (erano completamente neri in materiale plastico solo quelli per gli USA ma con forma spigolosa differente)

      Not long ago I read the following: if your most desired dream comes true, that is both the best and the worst thing that can happen to you.
      Apart from that: F-models that give a solid base for a restoration are much cheaper today than they were five years ago.
