- Here's an honest chat about my experience as a Graphic Design student - what it's been like for me, how I got started, whether I had any previous experience and some of the things teachers have told me.
This is obviously just my experience. I would love to hear from you too.
The video I mentioned, from the kickass designer Aaron Draplin: vimeo.com/1137...
He's the coolest.

«Don’t let other people’s level of knowledge on a certain thing stop you from wanting to get there too or wanting to go higher than that».
Graphic Design is such an important part of your society it should really be esteemed higher.
You're doing a great job of defying the stereo type Ana!
right
Abdur Rahman it’s far more demanded than you think
Cool video! I am in my mid thirties and I am an engineer and have great paying career in my field. I hate my job! Its not fun and I do't get to be creative in any way. I go to work everyday for a paycheck. I regret not getting into graphic design when I was younger, and take it from me, money isn't everything. So for all you young inspired designers out there, take it one day at a time and push out all the negative bull shit that consumes you. Don't listen to anyone else but yourself! :-)
Maybe you'd be into architecture then,as you've already got a foot in the engineering feild
Hey name brother :D
Your comment makes me wonder if architecture is a thing I wanna do instead of graphic design. I’m not actually a person that loves being too creative but instead loves rules and set knowledge I’d simply have to learn. Though I hated chemistry and physics.
Thanks!
your input has helped me decide a little... i was wondering if I should leave my engineering degree (I am on second year and doing BADLY!!) and i was feeling super bad for leaving the "good choice" for something that really fills my heart with joy, just because engineering is well paid and kind of respected in society as a career, but those things should not be the leading reason to study it, I think, but I still love the scientific field, is super interesting and makes you feel accomplised.
@@maremlopez6046 Marem, its a tough choice. An engineering degree is hard but your college experience shouldn't reflect what a career as an engineer might look like. I work with plenty of other engineers that love their careers. Everyone is different. Also, there are many places like laboratories and other engineering businesses that have graphic designers. You could still work in the scientific field as a graphic designer or other related digital design jobs. Something to consider. Good luck!
Thank you so much for this video. I like the area of Design and consider studying it, but here in Brazil, for instance, you don't necessarily have to have the degree to work as a designer. So it makes things a little harder. Also I kinda feel like I would prefer doing design things for myself and not for others - like clients -, if it makes any sense. Anyway. Tried to explain it. But thanks!!!
You have inspired me to do design ana, i subbed nac because of ur channel only. Next year after i finish my bach. deg in IT ill do masters in design !
Tech Burner Hey! I am also planning to do masters in graphic design. I will be completing bachelors in computer science next year. Can you please tell me which University you joined for graphic design?
Are bhai you're here! ☺️
I’m a young person I have basically planned out my life. I want to be an animator , so I have decided to go to graphic design school for as long as I want and then I’ll do a 2D animation course. I might look for a job at Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks etc but if all fail I have plan .B I’m gonna be selling prints, making t- shirt with my cartoon design on it, get i a CZcams channel where I can share my animation, I might become a convention traveler and sell my prints around the world. Plan .C I like to write stories so i might as well illustrated them to
Thanks for reading, if any idea please comment!❤️😊
You GO girl!! :D
Good luck beautiful 💙
You should start your CZcams channel. Next year you'll either be glad you started today or you'll still wish you could do it. Start getting familiar with cameras and the tech. Dont wait until you have all the knowledge and the answers before you start making things- it's surprisingly not how it all works.
Oh I see, that's plan B. Well, no reason not to combine some of your plans. :)
I am the potato girl dude I really want to work with Disney to idk If i should be a 2d animator or 3d 😭😭
this is crazy.... i think about my future, wishing to do this creative year, wich you can do here in switzerland, but on the other hand i always feel like i don't have the skills, like all the softwares etc.
and i actually thought about 'just freaking do it nana' and now you upload this video, wich is perfect! thanks a lot for the words, for the kindness, for the honesty! you're great ana! :)
i think a lot of ppl today do great stuff, they might have seen it somewhere else and perhaps its not individual enough, but a real graphic designer, creator will get its own individuality in it !
lets get this thing! Lets get startet! the first step! xx
Niana H. it sounds really interesting, could you tell me more about this creative year? :)
Artistoid. are you from switzerland? :) its called a 'gestalterischer Vorkurs' where you learn all the basics all around the creative things, digital, drawing, sculptures etc. heard a lot about it and it sounds amazing :D
Niana H. I'm from Italy, but I'm planning of studying in Germany and doing Film, so this looked so cool 😄 I wish we had something similar in Italy :( what would you like to do become? :)
that creative year sounds so cool! and don't worry! Knowing to work in programs isn't all ;)
ahh okey, yeah sometimes i think some countries got everything and some nothing at all^^ and id love to do something all around film etc 😉 you?
I am 34 and didnt finish college. I should have gone to the arts! I did so well on electives that were art based, I loved focusing on what my hands were doing while listening to whatever i wanted. The most relaxing thing ever apart from being under water. Now I regret everything.
I personally think there are 'NO RULES IN ART !'
but there might be rules in a requested art project.
Have fun with art or ur doing it wrong.
I went to a 24 hour Designathon/contest in Kansas City, and Aaron Draplin came and presented to us. It was so awesome, and there were only about 25 of us...so we each got face time with him, and he helped us with our designs. He said some nice things about my stuff, and it gave me such a confidence boost. Love him!!
graphic design is a major I'm thinking about so thank you for making this :~)
Thanks! Studying graphic design, I can relate on so many levels.
Don't let anyone demotivate you! Make your own rules & do your thing :)
Ana, any plans for the future? What's your ultimate goal as a designer?
Ana, this helped me so much. I'm in the midst of constructing my uni portfolio and I'll be starting uni next year. I'm pursuing a degree in communication design and I know it's everything I love (both the "communication" part and the "design" part), but I do get extra doubtful about the career paths, or about my own skills, etc. I think no matter what field we work in, it all comes down to how motivated and driven we are to constantly try to improve, and to keep pushing forward to achieve what we want. This, of course, shouldn't rely on what others have to say or how others view it, because no one knows about our progress or our chances of success better than us!
Thank you so so much for inspiring me and reminding me of these things. Your video truly helped a lot and you're such a great example of what I aspire to be later in the future.
Have a great December
Your (own) channel was one of the design channels I first came across on YT and I've been very inspired since. I didn't take any classes in school but I learned Photoshop (from really long ago) and Illustrator myself. And this year I was very lucky to have gotten a job as a graphic designer at a small firm even witbout much content in my "portfolio" (honestly, it was just my blog where i post some of my stuff and Instagram).
I would think the biggest difficulty in being a designer is that you are usually (if not all the time) working for a client and not really for yourself. I have met a few clients where they insisted on some really bad designs (copied from elsewhere) instead of my revised version.. And that is what kind of puts me off of the job sometimes.
But I am still very interested in Design and this is only the start. 😊
Esther Teo this is from so long ago but what's your blog/instagram? I'm interested in doing design and would love to check out your work :)
Thank you a lot for the video! I was wating for it 😆 I saw the video of Aaron, and it amazing! it was a great day thanks to you 💙 I'm 18 and next year I'll star college studying Grafic Desing
I relate to this so much!! I'm currently in school for graphic design and in high school all I did was traditional art. I didn't know any of the programs and thought that I would fall behind in classes because I wasn't familiar with them. I also had to take a drawing class in college and ended up not liking it even though it's what I did in high school. It's funny that you mentioned Aaron Draplin because he also inspires me and he recently gave a talk at my school and I got to meet him!!! I love this video and this is why you're awesome Ana :)
some real great advice here! I want to learn abit of graphics design, and you have motivated me to do that! so THANK YOU!
Aaron Draplin yes!!! He is such a great graphic designer and has a really good message. For graphic design at my university we have to take a bunch of basic art classes like drawing, 3d sculpture and color theory. That was NOT an enjoyable semester for me at all.
Great video!
I've always seen the computer as a tool because I cannot draw freehand very well. It helps me get my ideas out the way they are in my head.
Also, I find this quote by Ira Glass to be the most encouraging when it comes to becoming a designer: “For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit.”
It's your self criticism that makes things really hard, especially in a commercial environment where you're making things you didn't choose. I say hang in there and always be making things, even in your spare time. You will get better because, like with most things, practice makes perfect... or at least much much better.
gives me so much motivation to prove people with that outlook wrong. thank you
Haven't even watched the video yet but I'm so excited already. Love graphic design and wondering if I should study it so thaaaank you so much for this.
i actually first found your videos when i was contemplating studying graphic design, and now i'm in my second year of uni studying advertising and graphic design and it's one of the best decisions i've ever made! thank you so much for inspiring me then ana, as you continue to inspire me now :D
I think your instructor was just preparing you for the "need it yesterday" deadlines that come with many design projects.
How is it, that even when you're "rambling", you're still so eloquent and calming? :)
Oh my god thank you so much. I am also having trouble with choosing between graphic design and studying english, since I am not familiar with any of the softwares and graphic design, I am also (like you) really confused, but oh my god, these words. Thank you so much. You inspired me so so much, thank you. 😍
I value this way of thinking. I totally agree. It is what we make it.
Thank you!
Aaron Draplin's like one of the coolest guy I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, I admire him so much.
that's so strange that your prof said that! because in my country studing graphic design is considered great and above other creative paths because people think you can get a job anywhere and get paid well. i did consider studying graphic design but i knew my heart wasn't it that field and now i'm in fine art! for which no one anywhere will tell you it's an amazing decision and you will be rich because of it hahaha. but that's the thing, i don't want to go by other people's expectations and opinions. and i know i have a privilege to choose what i love to do, and i'm very grateful for it.
Ines J. Where are you from?
Loved the unfiltered video and thank u so much for the honestly u expressed ur journey and allowed the conversation of acceptance and going for it so glibly. 1000 likes and ❤️❤️❤️.
Thank you for making this Ana. Any time you want to sit down and talk about design, I will ALWAYS watch. Love these kinds of videos ❤️
just in time, as i am thinking about seriously thinking of doing this.
this is so true! i'm a graphic design student at the university of kansas and we're always told to play by the rules but i wish there was more flexibility with our assignments and inspiration on how to play around and just explore our craft.
I'll start my graphic design course on the 28th of March...and I was hella scared and nervous becoz it's all so new...and the fact that i won't be super prepared like I'd like to be makes me even more scared...but watching this video made me realise that it's okay to be scared...and that I should just do it while being scared...
Thank you so much Ana for this video! I'm a graphic design student and I often have these thoughts! By the way the opposite of motivated is demotivated 😊
Thank you so much for this! This video was perfect timing for me, because I have been wanting to study graphic design for the past 3 years now, but have been really scared to try. So I chose to study English this year, and possibly do graphic design next year.
This video inspired me even more to dare to dry! Design and art is something I thoroughly enjoy (and is somewhat good at) , and after watching this video I realized that that should be enough as a starting point. Thank you :))
"There's always gonna be little parts of the thing you like, that you'll not gonna like so much" isso é muito importante!
you're so beautiful
I am loving all the Portuguese in the comments and was excited to hear you're studying on the continent! Will be in Faial this summer, home island of meu pai ❤️🇵🇹 - a fan from Boston
Thank u for this amazing and empowering video! :)
I want to study graphic design, but it's really hard to get in the uni here in Germany. hopefully I'll make it, I'll give my best!
Btw, you sound like u have a cold... get well soon! :)
On the drawing note, for the people really worried about drawing. I was exactly like you going into graphic design and I was really insecure about it because everyone else in my class was awesome. By my second drawing course I got A's in all my drawing assignments so the point is you'll learn.
I loved this video. I'm a senior in high school and looking into studying graphic design. This helped! Thank you!
That was inspirational :) even for someone like me who doesn't do graphic design but wants to make creative videos. Thank you!
Can I just say that you are an amazing human Ana. Thank you for this video.
I APPRECIATE YOU AND THIS VIDEO SO MUCH THANK YOU
Not going to watch this video until tomorrow morning, in memory of the seminars with Am (you know who I mean), then I'll but the subtitles on, you know the rest! Keep your good work up! You rock and I really miss you! Looking forward to spend some of my holidays with you (eating sushi for sure)
Interesting hearing your experience . 😊
We get told the same when many teachers talk to us about our future jobs and I refuse to take that as the general rule. I think we've talked about the designer you mentioned in my Graphic Expression class, I'll definitely research more on him :)
Your smile is so beautiful!!! I can't focus on video, cause I'm smiling all the time, too :) Anyway, I'm going to study graphic design next year, that was really helpful, thank you c:
This was an awesome video! Loved hearing all of your thoughts :) I'm thinking of doing graphic design next year - super keen!
Thank you! you inspired me so much :)
It's good have a little talk like that once in while!
Hi Ana I'm a designer for a good amount of years... (21 to be more precise) and I should say your teacher is right. In all this years as a designer I can't say I already saw everything but I saw enough to tell you the concept of originality is a repeating circle. Also... the market for design in Portugal (or around the world for that matter) is really bad in general. But if you're really talented and entrepreneur you can start a company and then you'll be a lil better. I know and talk often with designers all over the world and some of them do good but the majority can only say they make a living. In Portugal is mostly like a struggle in therms of money but hey you must do what your passion tells you.
Good luck girl. And if you wanna talk we can meet on facebook or something. Maybe we can share tips on design and about the current state of design market.
Bye
I'm so in love about your channel! I just found you guys yesterday and I think I almost watched it all :) keep going guys, you're great and really inspiring
i met aaron draplin a couple weeks ago. he's really awesome and very inspirational :)
i'm in design school and am currently taking drawing classes. it is so relieving to hear that you hated drawing class too haha
Subscrevo absolutamente tudo! Continua please 😉😘
This is a wonderful little film Ana!
I needed this!
Thank you so much.
You're super beautiful omg. Rockon fellow Designer! Love Aaron J. Draplin too he's so grunge/industrial with his styles and methods.
Gosto muito dos teus vídeos, Ana. Acho que não nasci com tanta criatividade a ponto de desenhar bem, mas estou buscando como melhorar. Teu trabalho me inspira. Beijos do Brasil
that was an amazing msg that i really needed it and i am struggling, because i am studying graphic design. Great msg
A plain graphic designer is one of the most underrated careers here in mexico. not worth to study graphic design. The lower wage is for designers. Unless you know how to code almost like an engineer or to handle printing machinery.
Emmanuel Vargas Guajardo what does graph design consist of ? Is it a hard major ?
WHAT AN OVERLOAD OF CUTENESS!!
Great video, just what I needed.
I'm totally overworked and underpaid and far behind deadlines
it feels like hell
+Johhny Nitro I'm an illustrator
Do freelance! That way you set your own rates. Or ask for a raise!
I would definitely ask you out.
I needed this pep talk so bad, I’m going through a semester of having to take animation and I hate it SO bad, it’s the only I’ve hated throughout the whole career... And it is my 2nd time taking it and I really can’t see the end of the tunnel tbh :(
Aaron Draplin is the man! I want to meet him someday and just give him a high five!
I study graphic design also, and my teachers would never say that to me dear good, they always tell us how valious it is to study for 4 years and that degree all that effort is worth at some point, I was really scared when I started but with the drawing part and the programs part my collegue has classes for all of that but we start doing everything with our hands, wich is much more harder believe me or not, anyway as each day pass I love what I do more and more, sometimes anxiety comes around telling me are you good enough for this? or you are not creative enough you should have study something less challenging, but I think everybody goes trought that, anyway, graphic design is not something to be afraid of, there is a lot of doctors that dont get enough money a lot of arquitects and lawyers, the whole point of everything is giving your best and standing out
relay beautiful message thanks
The red lamp tho! Looks just like the CZcams logo :)
You are such an inspiration
Thank u so much fr your video its very very useful for budding graphic designer like us tganks a lot for the video😄😄💕
Muito obrigado por isto! Aconteceu me exatamente a mesma coisa! Adorava desenhar antes de começar a licenciatura e depois de dois semestres a ter aulas de desenho passei a gostar cada vez menos de fazê-lo! Ainda bem que não me aconteceu só a mim! Anyway, keep it up! Thanks a lot!
I'm actually surprised at the amount of positive comments
Hi Anna! I was wondering what song you used as BG music? Its really nice!
So encouraging and coool love youuuu
It's weird because I've never been good at anything but I'm good in Photoshop and Illustrator so I'm happy being a graphic design student only when it's software wise
And.... always practice ahead of time to start the new project or class with some knowledge
I also really Linked drawing and hated it in the university when I studied graphic design, it seems to be a trend. And as a girl i've been super discouraged thoughout the course and then later in different jobs.
On Monday i'm starting my last year in high school and i'm scared because i don't know what do i want to do for the rest of my life, i really like to draw since i was little and a couple of months ago i started getting interest in psychology, i don't know... i like how do a person does certain things or acts, like how does the brain works in the aspect of personality etc etc. I've been doing vocational exams to give myself a clue of what can i do. But i get graphic design, arquitechture, psicology every single time. The things is, 1. i don't want to design houses/buildings (architecture), 2. i don't want to make posters/logos/flyers/ (graphic design) 3. if i start like studying any of the first two and in the future i'm working based on that, i don't want to start hating drawing/painting because i'll depend financially of it or that it will feel like a duty for me. The only clue that i have is that when i see animation movies for example let's say.. "how to train your dragon" when there's a landscape/scenery i'm like "whoooa that looks so pretty, i want to do that!!" so that's my problem here, just wanted to share it
Ana Karen interests always change so I personally think it's a good idea to keep your options open when going into college. A lot of people change their major so no worries if you don't like your original option. With that said, have you looked at creative arts therapy? There are many specializations and careers similar to that but I think it may combine the creative and psychological aspects you seem to enjoy. Hope it helps, and best of luck in your senior year!~
:) This channel makes me smile.
It´s a good message i like it! Keep it up!
i love aaron draplin!!!!
Yay new video! You inspire me so much even though I just found out about your channel a few days ago lol. Been non stop watching your videos over and over to get creative and inspired lol. I'ma also taking graphic design too. Well both graphic and web design and a mix of other programs which is interactive Media Design.
Which universities did you apply to (if you don't mind me asking) and what advice would you give to someone who's confused as to whether to choose illustration or graphic design? Loved the video!
Love you ana,from Indonesia
Really good video
I miss yo cute face
Hello, Ana! I'm Brazilian guy and I really like of your channel. I have a question, how long do you spent to learn English?

Hi Anna!! Where do you study? I want to study design, but here in Brazil is kinda hard to find a good university...
omg u r so adorable❤️❤️love from 🇮🇳🇮🇳
i want to enter a second course which is graphic designing but i think it is expensive :(
