  • Learn how to play King of Tokyo, a 30-minute king-of-the-hill game of epic monster battles, designed by Richard Garfield for 2-6 players. In King of Tokyo, players control monstrous creatures as they battle each other for control of Tokyo. The goal of the game is to win, and you win by either being the last monster standing, or by being the first monster to earn 20 victory points, typically gained through rolling dice and staying inside Tokyo as long as possible.

    I didn't even make the connection that Richard Garfield created both this game and Magic the Gathering. It's no wonder King of Tokyo is such a fun game. -Kevin

    I just started playing this last night, and this certainly helped clear up some not-quite-clear spots. Cheers to you!

    I believe there is an error at 1:27. In the rule book (at least in mine) it says "The first Monster in the game to obtain at least 1 [claw symbol] deals no damage, but instead takes control of Tokyo". So in the shown example The King would not enter Tokyo since no claws were rolled.

      @TheRulesGirl  Před 7 lety +32

      Thank you for your feedback! I believe the rule was changed in between editions. I used the second edition rulebook when writing our script, which simplifies it to just "If there's an empty spot in Tokyo, go to Tokyo"

      Ah, I see. But you used the first edition graphics... ;D

      That was not meant as a criticism. I think it's better you used the first edition graphics.

      Mine says the same. So the first player can actually just choose to go to Tokyo from the start without roling any claws?

    I am unclear on a rule. If I were to roll 3 "3" dice and then roll three "2" dice can I keep them for a total of 5 VP???

  • @espenfr
    @espenfr Před 4 lety +2

    I thought you only had to enter Tokyo (when it's empty) if you ended up with a claw on at least one of your dice.
    This video tells you to enter Tokyo after you have rolled your dice (no claw's)

  • @6rimR3ap3r
    @6rimR3ap3r Před 6 lety +6

    So now I've seen the rules changed in some form between several print runs. My edition also says you enter Tokyo as soon as it's empty, not at the first claw (like in Will Wheaton's game session).
    What I wonder is: If I decide to leave Tokyo after being hit, does the other monster enter Tokyo immediately as I leave and score a point for entering, or does the next player enter Tokyo on his turn because it's empty? Let's say I'm P1, get hit by P4 and leave. Does P4 enter Tokyo or P2 after me?

  • @pedromqfernandes
    @pedromqfernandes Před 6 lety +2

    So only one monster can be on Tokyo Bay? And if so, what's the difference between who's in there and all the other monsters outside both locations? I've been played as if one monster occupies Tokyo City, and all the other monsters automatically occupies Tokyo Bay (regardless of the number of players).

    • @koomo801
      @koomo801 Před 5 lety +2

      No matter the number of players, only one monster will ever occupy Tokyo. In a game with 5 or 6 players, another single monster will occupy Tokyo Bay. Once the number of monsters still in play is reduced below 5, Tokyo Bay is no longer used once it's been vacated (if Tokyo is abandoned first, the monster in Tokyo Bay will be moved to Tokyo if he wants to stay). For attacking purposes, Tokyo and Tokyo Bay are considered the same (both monsters there attack the monsters outside the board, and the monsters outside the board attack the monster in Tokyo and the one in Tokyo Bay at the same time).

      If you are in Tokyo and you get attacked, you can accede the city for your attacker. That player would get one VP for taking over Tokyo. It may be in your best interest to stay in Tokyo, since you get 2 VP at the beginning of your turn if you are in Tokyo.

    Great video about the rules. No offense, but your voice isn't the greatest for explaining it, you don't pronounce words super clearly. Not sure if it's a speech impediment or English is not your first language.
