    Brendon Urie is one of the best vocalists of our time and an incredible writer and performer. This new album showcases his creativity and vocal chops like nothing he's ever done. The raw, live direct-to-tape recording process and the obvious nods to his musical heritage make it incredibly fun for the listener to get lost in (cue the nostalgia).
    But at the same time, the record is fresh and inspiring in the midst of the current digital trends in music production.
    Join me as we dive into the isolated vocals from the title track and study Brendon's approach to his range, tone control and power!

    Loved your insightful commentary! I see a lot of people complaining about the vocals on the new album, how “strained” they sound. People don’t understand that recording to tape captures every little imperfection, especially the ones that all modern artists hide and delete with digital recording. Urie’s vocal performance on this album is fantastic. It’s also imperfect, but that’s every human voice. I want to hear the human imperfections, it helps me feel like I’m listening to a real person, not a digitized, social-media perfect cyborg.

      @MrVleker Před rokem +10

      Well... I think he is trying too hard on some songs. I really like this song in particular, but some of the songs sound way too pushed and are off pitch as well. His voice can be a little exhausting to listen to at times on this album. I do like the approach though to the album as a whole, but the songs are a bit hit and miss for me

    • @spark-e
      @spark-e Před rokem +6

      There's nothing wrong with using digital effects nowadays to hide those imperfections. The album sounds like a collection of demos. And yeah, his voice is beaten to hell, he spent the past few years absolutely showing off, and he's paying for it. You can hear live performances from years back, he didn't sound like this before.

    Tbh what I have noticed is people who actually are educated in singing and music like this album. People who are not or are not familiar with tape don't seem to get it. This breakdown really shows how much of a talented vocalist he is. Tape is not going to sound the same as a digital recording. He also made an album to have fun. Lots of artists have during and post pandemic.
    For anyone complaining about his high notes. You have to record the whole take over just to fix one thing. At some point you have to accept some errors on a tape recording. I heard a few notes notes on the album that sounded strained. It happens and he was not as familiar with his songs as he is now. He really cleaned up from the recording to now. Live sounded absolutely amazing. Even the higher notes people intially complained about. Really liked a musically intelligent and amazing album.

    Brendon has a dark, powerful, dramatic, vertical, Old School, full body voice. I hear Tony Lewis, Mike Reno, Lou Gramm, Jimi Jamison, Bobby Kimball, John Farnham and early Steve Walsh. I even hear early Micheal Bolton, when he sang Rock. There is chiaroscuro, and ring like an Opera singer. He is really putting out to get his sound. Voices like this are always teetering on the edge of straining.

    I love listening to this album as a singer; practically every song is a mini showcase/masterclass in "How to Navigate Your Voice". From vocal range, to grit/distortion, to vibrato, to experimenting with placement + larynx positioning (some of his lower notes), Brendon's got *everything* on display here!
    And of course, the songs sound great on their own :) ("Sad Clown" is my favorite to sing along to!)

    I went to this albums concert, and man it was a sexy concert. His raw vocals at that performance just shot goosebumps down my arms. He even had a voice crack in the middle of a performance and had to take a quick drink (probably can find it on CZcams somewhere lol)- which I admired so much. It was proof that Brendon is indeed human, and he's genuinely a true trained performer and singer. He's real, not an autotuned robot, and that's ridiculously respectable. And all the while, he even left room to show off a little throughout the performance and all this is done while he's dancing lol. Brendon is amazing and truly is one of my favorite singers for a very obvious reason. There are some haters for this one, but you truly picked apart how legit he is ✨️👌

But there is a ton more stuff that he's done that ranges in severity, but definately paints the picture that this isn't the greatest guy.
      Btw if you want a fantastic band I recommend Dallon's band IDKHOW, he is in my opinion a far stronger vocalist, and a leagues stronger vocalist! His song Clusterhug is what this album tried to be, but successfully in my honest opinion

    Coming back to this video a year later and rereading the comments and it's just appalling to me that people are really this uneducated in terms of genuine, genius music and vocal talent. Brendon's vocals on this entire album are perfect even with the little imperfections.
    Ask how many artists nowadays record on tape, about 90% of them will say no because digital is easier to hide the flaws whereas the tap keeps you honest, Brendon even did an interview regarding this where he says it was amazing to record on tape with Mike Viola and Jake Sinclair because of that human element and because it kept them ALL HONEST.
    It's also appalling to me that a lot of people will say he's off key, off pitch, or straining his voice when they know full well they could NEVER reach the level of vocal talent that Brendon has reached over a career of OVER 18 YEARS.
    His voice is not beaten to hell, his voice has gotten much better and stronger over time as he matured and he's a lyrical genius in the pop punk/rock genre.
    This is an amazing album in a sense that:
    1. It's recorded on tape making it a true performance based album
    2. It's not over produced with thousands of effects and digital enhancements.
    3. You can hear the talent of all the people that worked collectively on the album at the same time from the guitars, keys, strings, drums, etc.
    All in all, I think a lot of people should have their own opinions yes, but don't for a second try and bash a true artist. If you think he sounds strained, sure that's your OPINION, but don't be bashing the artist saying he's beaten his voice to hell, he thinks he's some vocal god or something, or whatever the case is.
    Also, if you think you know what on pitch or key is, then you sing the songs "ON KEY" perfectly and post it to CZcams and let everyone know how the songs "should" sound vocally.
    Let's not forget Cyndi Lauper approached HIM to perform on broadway and to take vocal lessons with her in Kinky Boots. Tell me how that isn't evident enough that he deserves much more credit vocally than a lot of people give him.

There are some really fantastically recorded/filmed videos from the tour that you could react to. They did the whole album in order during the concert. They split the concert into basically 3 acts. @@chrisliepe yeah thanks i have tried that but i'm looking for separated track stems to use as backing tracks for a tribute band...For example under the bridge i need backing vocals but no lead vocals. There's nothing to be found on youtube like that.

    I do think this guy is a great singer and your comments are on target, but it's hard to hear past the production techniques. I was surprised when you say it wasn't heavily processed. Maybe it went directly to analog tape, but there was clearly a bunch of pre/post processing that distracts from the great vocal. Thanks for seeing beyond the processing, but I do think you should acknowledge the "enhancements". I personally would prefer his early vocals for analysis.

      @@Norce555 Fair question, and it sounds like the vocal (plus the backgrounds) were "isolated" from the final mix, which isn't the same as hearing the original vocal - so it's hard to know what was added on in between. I think the isolation sounds worse than the original recording - Chris can hear past it; it was tough for me on this one, although I've heard some great acoustic Urie recordings. I was expecting more of what Mr. Liepe did with the Chris Cornell isolations.

      @@davidvargas7165 If this "awful," then he's the greatest singer of all time. Is it possible we've just forgotten what a live performance sounds like after hearing twenty years of over-edited bullshit? I mean, this was supposedly done to tape -- which means very little editing was done. Not that that would excuse a bad performance, but this isn't one.

      @@davidvargas7165 he sounds great as always, but in terms of music compositions if feels like his just flexin lol, those high notes don't hit hard bc his using them all the time. If feels like a one trick pony, a very very incredible trick but one that can't last you forever without boring the audience.
