I am new to bass singing techniques, but have apparently I've been practicing them all my life. I have always just made all of these weird noises and imitated sounds and deep voices. Now I just got to put them all together.
Yeah that's when it dawns on you there are somehow voices even more extreme than this. His control is so good.

I am Brazilian and I really like these types of video thanks, please try to put the subtitles in Portuguese, I know it takes work but I find these classes very important but I can not understand most of the English words, because in Brazil there is practically no video lesson of bass and baritone vocal techniques.

To answer your question about subhamonics : yes, females can use the subharmonic register !!! As you said, we have pretty much the same anatomy and most of all, it's not the vocal cords that are vibrating in the subharmonic register (not only at least). When you use the subharmonic register, the sound is produced by the ventricular bands, vibrating an octave lower than your vocal cords !

Practitioner of strohbass here, which is the topic.
Strohbass doesn't use ventricular folds, no ; kargyraa *seems* to do from what I understand of it (and I could be wrong on that), but not strohbass. By strohbass I mean the kind of subharmonics that is really a mix between chest voice and vocal fry, what Geoff is talking about here. It's (one of) the sweet spot(s) in-between chest and fry. It is accessible to women, I've seen my choir director use it in front of me the other day. I'm not too sure about how that sounds for women though, because this register really shines in the lows.
The production of sound in this register is a little bit hairy : one desyncs their vocal folds, and they "sync" again at a perfect fifth. One vocal fold vibrates at the frequency of the tone you want to drop an octave, and the other vocal fold vibrates a perfect fifth either above or under that fundamental (I'm not really clear on that one, still have to research more). It means that your vocal folds do not vibrate at the same speed, and do not touch each other at every vibration, but for physical reasons, every other vibration of your original note frequency ( When one does 1 vibration, the other does 2/3 of one.). It seemed strange initially, so I verified on an oscilloscope, and that's effectively what's happening. The result is the octave under because your fundamental's frequency is halved.
Also, when researching combined and resulting tones, I thought the octave under was mostly imagined by our brain, and if, yes, it helps a lot that our brain does the harmonics math, the sound still exists, it can be observed on a spectrum analyzer. A fun thing that happens, is that the note we sing in chest voice, when we go into strohbass, becomes the second harmonic of a new fundamental that is the octave below.
There are multiple strohbass registers, an infinity actually, they match the undertone series (David Larson on YT shows it off if you look for "2nd subharmonics" on his channel). I'm currently working on the second one, for the heck of it, it's much much harder than the first one, for probably not much use in practice due to having to think in 5ths instead of octaves.
Strohbass, now that I'm used to it, helps a little bit with relaxation, I've found, and my director advised to keep practicing it at least a little bit every day. Regarding training to get to it, I personally would advise not more than 10 minutes a day. I did 15 mins a day, while being advised 20 mins a day, and I still lost my voice twice. 5-10 mins at most, I'm getting back to that little time dedicated to it for 2nd strohbass. Like Geoff said, you're not used to doing that, this will be exhausting for at least a couple of months.
I'm a female, and I'm learning subharmonics! They're still really shaky, but I've only just started, and it's possible! (My lowest subharmonic is an e2, and my lowest growl is about a b1, but only on a good day! So it's definitely possible for us females!)

As a former voice teacher I so appreciate your telling people to stay relaxed, and to stop when it hurts. You can so easily blow out your voice when singing low, it's easier to blow out your voice singing low than it is when singing high, and so many people don't realize it.
Whenever I try to expand my range:
Low notes: coughing
High notes: headache

God this man is amazing. There was a smaller event at a college in an obscure town called Grinnel in Iowa, and Voiceplay was supposed to sing outside but it rained a bunch. So they took everybody inside and sang some songs acoustic for us. They’re not only the best singers, but also the nicest people.
I'm a female and your tutorials really helped me develop the bass/low range sounds. That subharmonics also make it more easier to hit these low notes :) thank you 🧡

I Gotta tell you EVER SINCE I found you and the rest of the Voiceplay gang, I have just been hooked, (first song I heard with you guys were - Grim Grinning Ghosts followed by everything else) AND THEN (and this is one of my favorites) I heard you sing The Oogie Boogie song. And I think your range of notes are insane!! All your low notes are like melting dark chocolate *sigh* and your last note in Oogie Boogie, almost made it feel like my bones were vibrating!!! So amaizing!!! (About 3 weeks ago I found The Raven, read by you, it has become a sort of meditative thing for me to listen to. As a female, I can use subharmonics. I've learnt them from you! Of course, my subharmonic register is not as low as yours, because anatomically speaking the male voice is generally lower. But yeah, being a low voice certainly helps (alto here!) So I think that subharmonics use in female voices are quite uncommon, but not impossible! Stay awesome!
Yeah it is surprising to me after finding Geoff that bass singers don't have more attention. Seems more people are looking for those high notes but wow is it crazy to hear a real bass singer.

If you're not sure what note to start on, here's some great advice from David Larsson: sing your lowest note in chest voice (so as low as you can without too much breathy-ness or vocal fry).
Now sing a fifth above that note.
That's roughly where you should start trying to sing with subharmonics.
As an example, for me the lowest like F2 or G2 and a fifth above is C3 or D3. So I start trying to make a subharmonic sound around C/D.
The subharmonic register will start higher or lower depending on your own voice, so I hope this can help anyone stuck on where theirs starts! :)

Nice video Geoff! By the way women can do subharmonic notes! My sister can do the subharmonic technique. She got a B1 with this technique. Women cannot go as low as men in this register but they can produce it too!
actually, some women can go as low as Geoff himself if practiced enough! there's a second part to the subharmonic technique I've been learning. it allows us to reach notes all the way down to Eb1s for example with the fundamental note being Eb3. will upload a video when i master this technique, check out David Larson's video tho he's awesome

Yes, women can do the growls and low fries too, although no control on it yet (weird vocal range, I'm basically a baritone - sustained tone down to F2 and only up to G5 even if I do a really good warmup). :). Avi's overtone singing is fascinating on the high end.

I just watched it with captions after you mentioned it, and the “you” shows up at the very end when there is no sound or speech, and hasn’t been any for several seconds. I wasn’t really expecting you to be able to answer the question. I just think it’s weird that it pops up like that.

Swing a jump rope and looked at the nodes when you change speeds. That's the best visualization I've found so far. But, because of your help. I NOW HIT SUBHARMONICS!!? Thanks Geoff! How do you pronounce words when you sing very low in chest voice? Do you have to change the vowels? Same question for subharmonics. I seem to get different overtones with different vowels and consonants make it very hard to stay in the sub register.
I think when you change vowels your overtones automatically change, if you go from eeeeeiiiiiiioooooo your overtones will go from high to low
Can you talk a bit more about the “mask” technique. Tim Riley talks a lot about this but I can’t seem to utilize mask accept in the highest notes. The lower I go the more the sounds moves into my throat. When I do utilize mask low it makes my vowel sounds odd.

I think it’s definitely possible for women to learn to sing in their lower register, but it takes more time and practice to get there. At this point, I can only get to lower notes in vocal fry, but I’ve only been practicing it for a few weeks. As Geoff said...we have to be happy with the voice we have. I’ve just been working on improving my natural voice, and accepting I’m not going to be hitting that G.

Hey Geoff, I originally was introduced to subharmonics through Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing. Have you spent time with this style of singing? If you have not, I highly recommend looking into this style of music as it is subharmonic and overtone singing at the highest level. This type of singing encompasses both low and high pitch subharmonics and has helped me learn a great deal with both overtone singing but also growl singing and chest notes (intense vocal control in general).
I have more questions:
1. The 21 Pilots mashup is one of my all time faves and CAN YOU VOCAL FRY WITHOUT MOVING YOUR HANDS????
2. Do you seriously use subharmonics when you say "um" by complete accident because I can't even do it on purpose and I'm getting reaaaaaally jealous.
3. If YOU sucked in sulphur hexofloride, what would happen???
4. IS THAT THE CANE FROM THE QUEEN MEDLEY???
AND a serious question. As a female, how much is it physically possible to (naturally) lower my vocal range?

I'm really just unable to recognise what I'm looking for when "slipping into a subharmonic". How do you relax your throat, and how do you know you're starting to get it?
You just gotta keep trying... you'll figure it out.
Use a piano tuner app to tell you what pitch you are making. If the app shows a drop in pitch of an octave then you have slipped into subharmonics. That is probably the best way to know.
In my experience, try to hit some comfortable note and immediately try a vocal fry on that note. Then, try to figure out the exact amount of air to breathe out and you'll "hit" a note from time to time.
Some smartphone apps for pitch will help you out as well, you know if you hit some subharmonics by the pitch dropping down by approximately an octave
Find a very comfortable but lower note then sing it for a few second in an oh or an ooh vowel while keeping that note try to activate ur vocal fry without changing your original note until you slip into it and then start focusing on that sound and bettering it. hope that helps.
All you have to do is find a note and then, try to do fry but don't immediately fry it. Slowly experimenting with it. Make sure you have enough volume in your voice to achieve it
I wanted to know about your guys' background. I've watched the Oogie Boogie song countless times analyzing a few things. Like obviously you don't talk in your real voice for the Oogie Boogie man at all. That's already impressive that you not only mimicked a voice a few octaves above your natural speaking voice, but you also were able to mimic expressions both vocally and facially that somebody with your personality wouldn't do. Gasps and whatnot. This hints at you having vocal acting lessons. I can't tell if you guys were all in theatre or if in the course of working with voiceplay you guys took tons of lessons. Your guys' skill with characterization as well as changing your voice to still have good tone while being a bit more nasally or growly is impressive. Where did you learn it all?

I actually use the “slight trauma” quite often. About the time you put this video out I had just got back from a week in Disney/universal. I could tell that my voice was “damaged” because It was cracking more than usual when just talking normally. So I put on my a capella playlist with a bunch of your stuff, PTX stuff, home free and Peter Hollens and I was hitting notes comfortably that I haven’t hit before. Like a lot of your parts in grim grinning ghosts were just out of my chest voice but I was hitting it comfortably and I was like oooh I like this. But yeah the mild trauma does work but only temporarily like you said. It used to happen during football games w/ the band (me) doing drum cadences that we had cheers to, it can be achieved after like a day in a theme park like I had, but also, it is risky cause sometimes you don’t get mild trauma, you just get trauma lol. Anyway great vid, love the hair and your singing, keep being amazing
5:30 I think whistle tones are accessed through vocal fry but i'm not sure. Also, i believe all voice types can access and develop this register with enough practice!

@@daniellucas5522 No they are overtones which is different. He just tunes and amplifies a certain overtone using his tongue (mainly centered around a sort of "urrr" vowel). Whistle voice is done by constricting your vocal folds and pushing air through, this is why it can be accessed through vocal fry as the vocal folds are pushed tightly together when doing fry. When whistling you vocal folds don't actually vibrate so that's how you can tell when you are doing it by just feeling for vibrations in your throat. If you feel nothing then you got it!
Well yeah kinda, whistle tones are similar to fry in that they both involve locking down parts of the vocal cords, you know, holding them together, not letting parts of the cords move. And some people teach whistle tones by using techniques that involve frying.
I LOVE this discussion!! I have heard of sub harmonics but never heard anyone that actually explained it. I have discovered that I can actually slip into it fairly easy as a beginner but not much range...yet. I think it may be a matter of teaching the muscles that interact to duplicate in the higher ranges. Just a beginner but..THANKS Geoff for the good start.

What's your lowest subharmonic note? Also, have you ever tried going into the second subharmonic level? David Larson recently put out a video that explains it pretty well. If you can get a handle on that technique, I can't imagine how low you could reach before growling.
It's similar to how you drop from chest to subharmonic; the only real difference is that you start on a subharmonic note, going closer to vocal fry until you find that sweet spot.

He doesn't know 2nd Subharmonics. Also his voice is already low enough to go super deep.
These videos of yours are really helpful! I was around 17 years old when I found my subharmonic range. I am 22 now and I can use it pretty well, but for some reasons it is so "periodic". I mean sometimes I can use it clearly but sometimes can not at all! This changes 4-5 times a day. Does anyone have the same problem or solution?
