Thank you for acknowledging the chance that a major problem may be causing floaters. Twice I had a retinal detachment when I noticed floaters. Caught quickly, lased and heal properly. I will say this, not all doctors are as good as others when it comes to spotting the start of a detachment. If in doubt get a second opinion.

You are clearly knowledgeable, well-spoken and articulate and so there's no need to resort to these "gimmicks" when making videos. That being said I appreciate the great info contained here. My mom had a vitrectomy in her right eye April 2023 l, it worked, no problem. Went a few weeks later to do the left eye and the next morning she was totally blind in that eye, the vision will never come back. It's not worth the risk😢 just a fyi for those thinking about doing it.

I'm so sorry to hear that. The message I hope to get across with my videos is that there is no perfect solution. Though a vitrectomy is the most likely to eliminate floaters entirely, it is the most risky, as you have witnessed. I hope that people receive this information, along with all of the pros and cons to better understand what they are facing. Thank you for sharing this, because I think it is so important and I hope it will help others. :)

I've always had small transparent ones. I recently got some darker ones though at the beginning of this year and a small black dot that hovers around the center of my right vision more and more. What's also annoying is that they sometimes glow in bright light or when I watch TV at certain angles which they never did before. I saw 2 different doctors and both lied to me and said there is no treatment for them. Thanks for being honest in your video Doc. Gives me some hope if they end up getting worse or don't improve. Now I have to find an honest eye doctor.

YAG vitreolysis does not break up floaters into smaller floaters. It emits plasma that physically evaporates the floater. It is problem the one treatment I perform that patients are the most satisfied with. We take fundus photos before and after that shows the disappearance. YAG vitreolysis is really only effective with Weiss Rings. If it is not a weiss ring, then vitrectomy is the better choice

The floater I have in my left eye started when I suddenly started experiencing bright flashes in that eye with my eyes closed. I went to a retina specialist and apparently some of the vitreous fluid had detached, but without causing a retinal detachment. It's been at least a year since I was diagnosed, and my brain has adapted a little but not much in helping me see clearer through it. More importantly though, I was diagnosed with glaucoma at that same visit, and I was absolutely unaware I had it, as it had been years and years since my last appointment with an ophthalmologist. So, I would encourage everyone to see an ophthalmologist once a year.

I'd like to add two points here. There are what I can "friendly" and "unfriendly" vitreous detachments. The former are associated with aging, whereas the latter are hastened by trauma, such as a blow to the head. The latter present more of a risk for injury to the retina and usually present more dramatically. The other condition that could initially present as floaters ans curtains is an ischemic optic neuropathy - in essence a stroke in the eye. This is more common than most people think. Bottom like is contact an ophthalmologist or go to the ER asap if you have symptoms.

One punch turned my life upside down. I implore all eye doctors to heavily push for a better solution such as vitreous reformation vs. vitrectomy & eye drops for cataracts vs. removing the natural lens.
The vitreous is important for eye health, right, in creating a hypoxic environment and protecting the lens.
We can do better by stopping vitreous liquefaction on a molecular level to restore it to its normal gelation, create better tamponades for retinal surgery, i.e. hydrogels, etc. I've read medical literature, contacted professors of ophthalmology and biomedical engineers around the world... And for some reason the AAO is not interested. Therefore, I don't understand why this hasn't affected a wealthy person on some sort of personal level (floaters, PVD, eye surgery, injuries, something that compromised their vision), that would prompt them to heavily fund research and get products on the market.

One annoying one is, as the eye doctor said, “cellophane in water”… a clear fuzzy area… most annoying when over my fovea (main focus area of eye). Got the floaters after concussions and visual snow syndrome which kind of makes the entoptic phenomena impossible to ignore when the "filter" in the brain is somewhat broken. Been over a year and no improvement but who knows. Since the visual snow doesnt seem to dissipate and the enhanved entoptics are apart of it, my neuro theroizes i most likely wont "get used to them." Eye floaters started in my left eye 2 weeks ago, with my usual eyelid eczema that starts up around the start of the spring and fall. My eyelids and entire eye area itching like crazy and swelling from rubbing. I discovered some foods to stop eating bcuz it stirs up histamine, which are pork and eggs. But especially pork. At first, I followed some popular advice about castor oil on the eyelids. And my eyes swelled up, so they didn't respond well to the castor oil and I can't do that anymore, and the floater started not long after that.

It does however come with risks, which are important to highlight as well. There is no perfect solution, so I definitely want people to understand that what they may read online about drops and other things that claim to cure floaters are misleading and not proven.
